I'd go to Kroger and buy one.

What about grabbing the face mask?  I think I've seen that called on a runner one time, years ago.  I think the borderline grabs are ignored as "stuff arming".  Offensive linemen can't do it.  Running backs can unless they grab and twist, I think.

Is there a hard and fast rule about being on the LOS?  Three feet?  The OLs often are V shaped.  I see this called on punt teams fairly often (not being on the LOS).

In college I've not once, ever, seen it called on a ballcarrier (QB, RB, WR) even when grabbing and twisting.  It's a really weird double-standard and I dislike it and disagree with it.

How do our politicians in DC get so rich on a government salary?  For example, the Obama's recent purchase of a home on Martha's Vineyard for >$11 million.  I think that's their third home with the others being in posh neighborhoods in Chicago and DC.  Not sure if they ever bought or still have that one in Hawaii.  If so that would be four.  Anyway, it's both parties but that's the one at the top of my brain right now.

I remember my first tee ball game I didn't know that you had to cross home plate in order to score. So my first time around the bases I crossed third and headed back to the bench. So the coach and the parents were all like "Brutus! Run home! RUN HOME!" Of course I thought that they meant back to my house. So off I went, when all of a sudden I had like 20 adults running after me. I'm thinking"man, this is a weird game."

Does the TFL stats include sacks? They are always two different stats but curious if they are combined since a sack is also a TFL.
Title: Re: Thread for strange questions

I presume TFL includes any tackle made behind the LOS for any reason, including sacks, which means of the QB.

I don't know if it's a sack if you TFL a running back who is trying to throw the ball though, I'd guess not.

It would be kind of neat if you like up in a wild cat formation with the QB split out wide but then QB runs behind the RB for a lateral and then gets sacked.

Why is Iowa the Hawkeyes?  I do know how to husk corn, never associated it with a state though.

Why is Minny the Gophers?

Georgia initially was the goats (and not greatest of AT either).  There is a Yale connection here.

husker. Noun. (plural huskers) One who husks (as one who removes the husks, leaves, from ears of corn).

The funny thing is where I grew up in Iowa we didn't use the word husk.  We shucked corn, which means the same thing as to husk corn.

In fact my hometown would have an annual "shuck fest"  where everybody in town would get together to shuck all the corn that was going to be cooked for the annual sweet corn festival.

Why is "jeopardy" spelled that way?  We pronounce it more like "jeprody".

Middle English iuparti, from Old French ieu parti ‘(evenly) divided game’. The term was originally used in chess and other games to denote a problem, or a position in which the chances of winning or losing were evenly balanced, hence ‘a dangerous situation’.

I'm pretty sure no person can enjoy Christmas without watching Die Hard at least once.  The sequels, not so much of course.

I was musing about Predator, the movie, the other day, and how good I thought it was, and then how awful the sequel was.  It ranks up there with bad sequels, with a lot of competition.

Good question (both).  Ah,   there's never a bad time to root against the Nazis?  Why must Christmas be excluded from such family celebrations?

speaking of which, underrated non-traditional Christmas movie,  Stalag 17 (1953).    Funny (intentionally so) movie of American POWs in a German camp around the Christmas season.

The origin of the Hawkeye nickname is actually a little controversial.  There are actually different versions.

Which version you believe depends on whether you were a fan of the Whig political party or the Democratic-Republican Party in the 1830's

One version is that the Hawkeye nickname was inspired by the character Hawkeye from the James Fennimore Cooper's novel The Last of the Mohicans (AKA Daniel Day Lewis from the last movie).  Iowa's early settlers supposedly were a lot like Hawkeye, so Iowa became known as the Hawkeye State.

The other version is that the Hawkeye nickname was created to honor Chief Blawkhawk,  who played a big role in both Illinois and Iowa's early history.  So to honor the chief, Iowa became known as the Hawkeye State.  I don't buy this version myself because if it were true, Iowa would probably be known as the blackhawk state.

To answer your question with a question, "How can we know?"
What we can surmise is that a victorious Germany would have inflicted a harsher peace on the Allies than the Allies did in fact inflict on Germany.
Per the Font of all Wisdom and Knowledge:

Quote
The Septemberprogramm . . . was the plan for the territorial expansion of Imperial Germany, prepared for Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg, at the beginning of World War I (1914–18). The Chancellor's private secretary, Kurt Riezler, drafted the Septemberprogramm on 9 September 1914, in the early days of the German attack in the west, when Germany expected to defeat France quickly and decisively. The extensive territorial conquests proposed in the Septemberprogramm required making vassal states of Belgium and France and seizing much of the Russian Empire. The Septemberprogramm was not effected because France withstood the initial German attack, and the war devolved into a trench-warfare stalemate, and ultimately ended in German defeat.

The harsh peace that Germany imposed on France after the Franco-Prussian war was one of the causes of WWI.  The Septemberprogramm peace would have encouraged most of Europe to seek a reversal of the situation.

She didn't buy anything.  We were in a shop called Mephisto, I think it was, that claimed to have the best shoes in the world.

They had some "on sale" for around $200, but she didn't like the sole.

https://www.mephisto.com/us/ (https://www.mephisto.com/us/)

These were more practical, and I thought they were dressy enough, and we walk quite a bit around here where we're somewhat dressed up.  $200 was OK.  I have two pairs of Allen Edmunds that I got at their outlet store for about $140 or so.  Men's shoes don't cost anything like women's, ha.  She looked at Bally also, too expensive.

She wanted to go into Cartier while we were there.  Our wedding rings are from Cartier, but they weren't horribly expensive, everything else there is.  Fortunately, for me, she's very reasonable about spending money on stuff.

That's a nice mall, it was nearly empty, and they are working on a rather large expansion of some sort, an attached hotel and restaurant etc.

It's interesting that a 15 yard penalty and a 5 yard penalty have the same effect inside the 5 yard line.  What if a team could kick a PAT from say the 35 yard line and have it count 2 points?  That would make kickers more valuable.

What if there was a rule that a kicker of either type had to play at least one offensive series each game?

That would be weird.

Much of the early miniaturation of electronics was initially a result of the space program. Development of many of the insulating materials we use today were a result of the program. The technology that came out of the space program is almost endless.

Would they have came anyways? That is a good question. Maybe, but definitely would not have came as fast. Look at the movies involving future tech before the space race or even during the early years of it. Nothing was miniaturized. People didn't think in those terms until there was a need for it and the space program provided the need.

The fact that the US cannot put a person into low Earth orbit today is incredible to me.  In 1970, I would have been certain we'd be to Mars by now, easily, and have bases on the Moon.  We almost quit on space with manned exploration.

Today, I think we're better off exploring with drones than with humans.

Colonization is another story.  The concept of pulling an asteroid into an L5 point for mining purposes is interesting to me.

The pace of development reminds me of 2007, huh.  This isn't near where we live but north at Buckhead.

I've stayed at what this calls the Whitley (it has been the Buckhead Ritz Carlton--business trips on a very favorable corporate rate--better than at the Marriott down the street), and been to that mall several times. But never to Cartier. But once I left that job, I haven't had occasion to go back.

Yeah, the Ritz changed hands and now is the Whitley.  I heard the Ritz was building a new place there, and a new one near us too somewhere.

We were walking the area one summer looking at condos and it was hot for some reason.  We ducked into the Ritz just to get some AC and the doorman offered us both cold waters, we appreciated that, we were not guests.  It was nice service.  We decided we didn't care for the walkability of the area, no parks.

The wife was watching some show last night and they had traffic stopped on a road in Costa Rica to allow a sloth to cross the road.  She asked me what the term was for the animal, and I told her, it has a complex French name.  I mentioned the words froth and moth and both, as being similar spellings, and she asked why both was pronounced that way.  It's interesting to see the terms she doesn't understand because her English is otherwise so good, but you can see odd terms like froth and sloth would not be in her vocab.

In other news, this "tower" in the rendering below is up the street from us, and a curious story.

https://atlanta.curbed.com/2019/12/18/21026892/atlanta-2019-2020-development-beltline-midtown-construction (https://atlanta.curbed.com/2019/12/18/21026892/atlanta-2019-2020-development-beltline-midtown-construction)

They built a $3 million sales center for the condos, and a few months back started excavation, and then quit.  So there is a hole now, but zero equipment for anything.  The condos are pricey, and I'm guessing they are not selling well.  So, there is a lot of speculation as to whether it will really happen, or not.  It's an expensive piece of land in a prime location, so hopefully the S or sell it to someone who will do something.  The market is very tight around us, but quite a few new units are slated to be built in the next couple of years.  I think this place just over priced themselves.

Agreed. I would go running through the Brookhaven (I think) neighborhood a few blocks away, but that whole area seems dedicated to the car. I would use MARTA to get to the airport and back, as that was just within reasonable walking distance with a rollerbag--but not for the average American.

Brookhaven is a bit northeast of Buckhead.  It's just a commercial area on the main road with some residential off it.  I originally was interested in Buckhead circa 2011 when I thought I could snag a 2 bedroom condo "cheap".  They weren't really cheap.  I had no thoughts of midtown back then.

We have one by my office, but not the route I typically drive.  I think it's slightly more complicated than that one.  The only issue I have (aside from typical people having issues with something new), is that with the numbers of lights and signs, it does make it confusing to rely on, because you can't count on the sign/light that is relevant for you being the one that is directly ahead of you.

It seems most of the interchanges here being rebuilt are going to that style.

http://www.dot.ga.gov/DS/SafetyOperation/DDI (http://www.dot.ga.gov/DS/SafetyOperation/DDI)

They are rare enough at this point to be somewhat confusing until I realize what I'm into.

Of course, in France they nearly all use traffic circles, which work pretty well if traffic is not overly dense.

Ahh, I assumed from the diagram @Cincydawg (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=870) posted that the interchange between the crossing lanes of traffic was an overpass, not at grade with signals. That way you could do this without the crossing traffic ever having to stop. It would be a lot more expensive though.

I'm not sure that this is ALL that much better than a standard cloverleaf. In fact, I could see it as potentially being worse due to confusion. With a full cloverleaf you don't even need traffic signals.

In city areas I often see partial cloverleafs. They're quite common here, IN that case you still have a signal on each side of the freeway, but the vast bulk of traffic on the cross street don't ever have to cross over each other. So I don't see what the improvement is there.

I'm sure there are traffic engineers who have determined it's a wonderful thing, but I'm not seeing the advantage just looking at the way it would flow.

To me it doesn't look like the pictured one decreases land usage either.
Title: Re: Thread for strange questions
Post by: Cincydawg on December 19, 2019, 01:46:24 PM
The diamond takes less room than a cloverleaf, and the latter doesn't work well when traffic is heavy.  Most of the "half" clover leafs are being rebuilt.
This may be more illustrative:

The traffic on the secondary road reverses.  The freeway is of course unimpaired.  This makes for fewer total signals for traffic.

I thought they were weird at first, but I actually like them now that I've grown used to them.  They're rebuilding many overpasses in this way in the Austin area now.

Why do some states have major universities called State State and other don't?  Probably some land grant thing?

PA and OH have their primary U as "State".  One even named the town that.  Georgia State by comparison is a "commuter school" that didn't have a football team until fairly recently.  (One  might argue they still don't, they play now where the Braves used to play).  Louisiana State is, I think, a pretty significant football school also, but SC State, and Alabama State I think are HBCUs.  Mississippi State, Florida State, and NC States are FBS teams.  Texas State?  Arkansas State?  Kentucky State?  Indiana State?  (I think they play basketball, not sure.)

UMass we kinow as a pastry.  Mass State?
Title: Re: Thread for strange questions
Post by: Cincydawg on December 30, 2019, 09:05:40 AM
A somewhat related thing is the "Tech" appellation (as we have learned from soft drink commercials).  Granted, they play a soft schedule, but Techs usually are better than States, who stink.  How many "Techs" are there in CFB FBS level play?  Two?

I know NC State is a kind of "Tech" in effect.  UNC has the "humanities" and medicine etc., and NCSU has the engineering etc.  I think Ohio State has a well regarded engineering school.  Are the States tending to be somewhat like the Techs?  And the U ofs out there are more generally focused on humanities and whatnot?

Maybe there is no real rhyme or reason to any of this, it all just happened.  UGA got started well before any land grant thing happened.  It's a weird story because in 1785, the area around Athens was, well, remote would be the term.  The state was the least populous in the new country (ours).  And yet somehow they felt a need to start a university in the middle of nowhere, mostly for the wealthy white sons of course, who otherwise might get into trouble.  Send them off to school and they will stay straight and fly right, they said.

Indiana State plays football at the FCS level.

The California system always seemed odd to me. You have an entire collection of schools that are within the University of California system, and then another whole collection of schools in the California State University system. There is little argument that the UC schools are the premier schools, and CSU the second tier, when it comes to admissions, academics, etc. And it's true in football as well, where all 4 FBS P5 programs in the state are either private schools or UC schools (USC, Stanford, UCLA, Cal). There are 37 college football teams in CA, but the only two other FBS programs are Fresno State and San Jose State.

And of 9 schools in the UC system, only two of the 9 field FBS football teams. Two more field FCS teams, and the remaining 5 don't have football teams at all.

Texas is similar.  There are many universities within the University of Texas System (The University of Texas at Austin, UT-San Antonio, UT-Dallas, UT-El Paso, etc.).  And then the Texas A&M University system has its own collection of schools (Texas A&M in College Starion, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas A&M Corpus Christie, etc.).  Only one of the  Texas A&M system schools plays D1-A football (the original Texas A&M in College Station), but three in the UT System do-- UT, UTEP, UTSA.

To address Cincy's original question, in a lot of states, the "State" university started as the ag or land grant school, and the "University of" was the mainstream or flagship university.  Oklahoma State was originally Oklahoma A&M.  Kansas State University was originally Kansas State Agricultural College.  There are some other examples.  As those colleges expanded beyond just their ag roles, many of them wanted their names to reflect their broader mission, so they changed to "State" rather than A&M.  This didn't happen EVERYWHERE, as obviously Texas A&M never made that change.

Also, specifically for Texas State, that school was called Southwest Texas State for a very long time, until the early 2000s.  It's an independent school, not from either major university system, and when folks started turning their noses up at "directional" schools, Southwest Texas State decided to rebrand as Texas State.  Other directional schools have rebranded similarly, like Southwestern Louisiana that decided to rebrand as the University of Louisiana Lafayette.

I plan to play golf in Flower Mound on Sunday the 5th, stay in the Arlington area until Tuesday afternoon and be in Round Rock Tuesday evening.

I'll be in the Round Rock area until leaving bright and early Sunday morning the 12th.

That's a killer return trip.

When I was young and dumb, I used to drive from Fort Bragg, NC, to Tulsa, in something like 22 hours.  I would stop at a truck stop in Tennessee and take a 2-hour nap in my car.  Other than that, it was stopping only for gas.  Bathroom visits had to be incorporated into gas stops.  I wouldn't do that on a bet now that I'm old and dumb.

Have a safe trip.

A "poison" that expires because it degraded chemically would nearly always be less toxic.  The various nerve agents for example are chemically reactive to water (and especially hydrogen peroxide).  Once degraded (hydrolyzed), they are pretty nontoxic.

Humans did not evolve from monkeys of course, and if we did, there is no reason monkeys would not still be around.

Yeah, the spot on that play was atrocious, and it certainly seemed like there was CLEAR evidence on replay that he was down well short of the line. I recall one camera angle where his head contacted the turf just at/short of the line to gain, with the ball 1/2 yard behind his head in his arms. Thus he was at least 1/2 yard short. Yet they let the first down stand.
