Last night, my wife said she was taking the girls to the movies and her parents' all day. Cue the very happy dance.
All sorts of goodness today.
Big 12 championship at noon - winner is almost certainly in unless:
SEC Championship at 4 - LSU is probably in either way but Georgia can be in with a win
B1G Championship at 8 - Go Bucks
Also basketball! OSU and PSU play at noon - both have been strong this year.
-
Weather here is cloudy but supposed to clear up this PM and hit 63°F. I should be able to get to the park and run some before 4 PM. As I don't expect a W today, I'm pretty calm about the game, and they might win of course if they catch a break or three, or perhaps LSU is overly regarded (I doubt that). Making the CG thrice in 3 years is something only one other SEC team has done (Florida when it first started). Of course, the SEC E is really two teams and some posers right now.
I still see OSU as the most complete team and that mobile QB thing is a major plus when facing elite opponents. I noticed last night Oregon was using Herbert to open up their offense and keep the Utes from blitzing with abandon, nice initial game plan. I know Fields has a bit of a dinged knee so I don't expect that from OSU today, but they might do it in the playoffs. I thought Fields would be very good but he has impressed me this year, he picked up a new system quickly and fit right in.
OU and Baylor, well, the helmet thing influences any thoughts I might have. OU also has that running QB thing going, but probably won't need much from Hurts.
I enjoyed watching half of a serious game last night, I finally nodded off and went up to bed, was up at 5 AM this morning. I am constantly surprised at how early I awake after being retired.
-
I have absolutely no love for Baylor (this stems from before Briles' scandal) but I am all for a non-Blue Blood making the playoffs so I hope they beat OU (sorry CW).
Seriously, imagine Baylor in the playoffs. How wild is that?

What is the SEC W, in this light?
-
The SEC W has two obvious upper level teams and Auburn, which is pretty good, so I'd give them three. Maybe two or three out of seven is pretty decent.
A&M was a disappointment for many this year but they did play a rough slate. Arkansas is in Rutger territory. The Miss programs are missing. The East does have a couple 7-5 teams of course. I thought Kentucky might wash out completely, but they did "OK" for them. The Vols really recovered after that horrendous start, but they got wins over nobodies.
-

as wild as a sic'em bear winning the hypesman
-
I'll be rooting for Baylor today as a dog, expecting the Sooners to win.
gonna be a beautiful December day here. High near 50 with sun. I'll be golfing if someone pushes hard enough.
New siding and soffits on the house done as of yesterday. Contractor will caulk everything this afternoon as the temp will be up. Long overdue.
I'll be rooting for all the dogs in the CCGs. chaos is fun for casual observers.

The SEC W has one upper-level team, one that doesn't play defense, despite having a defensive coordinator who makes more money than a whole lot of head coaches.
Bama is not an upper-level team right now. The lost the only two tough games they played.
-
by upper level, do you mean top 5, top 10?
Bama is pretty good - I think

That you typed this is the problem. Maybe they are. Probably not. Helmet is shiny. Minnesota's is not.

Are we including basketball here today or in another thread?
-
I'm just saying I'm not positive
you seem more sure of yourself
do you think Wisconsin and Penn St. are better than Bama?
-
I do.
-
Are we including basketball here today or in another thread?
If it streams through your consciousness it goes here
-
I think Alabama is an upper level team that could beat anybody on a given day fairly frequently. They lost a rather strange one at Auburn and lost by a few points to the #1/2 team at home and blew nearly everyone else out. I think they would handle any Pac or ACC team aside from Clemson. The AP has them at 9, which sounds about right to me, though I think they'd be favored over any but the top 3 teams right now.
But, such things are arbitrary. One can discount nearly every team out there for bad losses or unimpressive wins or weak scheduling.
-
Bama WRs can abuse anybody. This Bama team is like Riley era OU for some reason.
-
if the Badgers can stay within 10 of the Buckeyes tonight, I'll think they could handle Bama on a neutral field
if the Badgers upset the Bucks, any chance they might get Bama in a bowl game?
luv to see the Badgers take down Bama
-
If UW upsets OSU tonight, they are a lock for the Rose Bowl. They might go there, even with a close loss. If the Rose takes PSU over UW, UW will either get an at-large Cotton Bowl (please, no) or the Citrus Bowl against, very possibly, Bama (please, yes).

Bama's Def.isn't that great but you'd need a passing attack to stretch them. While giving up 48 to Auburn and 46 to LSU is understandable 31 to Ole Miss and 28 to T A&M - meh
-
What's good for OU is directly and immediately bad for Texas, so I'll certainly be rooting against them. Not rooting FOR Baylor, mind you, because that would feel disgusting too.

If Wisconsin wins tonight- they should be in the CFP.
-
If Wisconsin wins tonight- they should be in the CFP.
Too much would have to happen for that to be a reality. OSU is in no matter what happens tonight.
Clemson would have to lose for UW to even get considered for a spot. Not going to happen.
OU has to win. LSU has to win. Those could happen. Utah already got out of the way, so there's that.
I see OSU and LSU as locks no matter what happens today.

That damn Illinois hiccup.
-

maybe should, but won't
Lovie killed that chance
-
If Georgia were to annihilate LSU, LSU should not be a lock.
Would LSU truly be one of the "best four" if it got blown out by an offense-challenged team that lost to South Carolina?
I've got a dog in this hunt, obviously. :)
-
Lovie killed that chance
Funny how some teams are obviously better but in a game can seem lethargic and unispired. If they were to play again I wouldn't bet the ranch but a barn, stable, corral and some acreage wouldn't be out of the question
-
That damn Illinois hiccup.
That, and playing the best team in the NFC East twice in one season.
-
If Georgia were to annihilate LSU, LSU should not be a lock.
Burrow would have to be injured or simply play the worst game of any QB in Div.I this season for that to play out
-
Lovie killed that chance
For 60:00:00, UW led the whole time, and lost. That's a hard thing to do.
-
That, and playing the best team in the NFC East twice in one season.
That’s why I say- if the best them they deserve it
-
I'd love to see Wisconsin get into the CFP if they win. It's unlikely of course, but Oregon did start the ball rolling, and ya never know...

Wouldn’t that be considered the best win of the year by any team?

Could be, but losses matter too and, perhaps more importantly, so do helmets.

IMO, less importantly. But I'm just a wide-eyed optimist.
-
Good heavens no, I loathe the dookies.
But I do pull for Ferrari in F1.
Sadly, pretty much ALL of my front-running teams suck right now. Many of them for decades.

I'm not saying it's important to me. I'm saying it's important to Disney's committee.

I love it that Ferrari hasn't won Le Mans since the Ford GTs won four in a row, 1965-68 1966-69.

I love it that Ferrari hasn't won Le Mans since the Ford GTs won four in a row, 1965-68.
When I went to see the movie a couple weeks ago, I wore my Ferrarri t-shirt, and my Ford ballcap. I like to think people at the theater found it confusing, or amusing, but in reality I doubt anyone noticed.
But my i s c & a aggie wife DID notice, and gave me a particularly long eye-roll for it! :)
-
Oops! '66-69 were the GT40's wins at Le Mans.
-
I did get dragged to that movie. Turned out, I loved it. Glad I got dragged to it.
-
That's kind of a quick trigger for the T on Stevens
-
ManU up 2-0 at the half!
-
Some pretty good games going on right now. Maction is delivering and Dr. Pepper in Dallas is interesting.
-
Watching the second half of B12. Appears lost their quarterback. Unlucky
-
ManU wins The Derby 2-1!
Charlier Brewer has had some tough injury luck this season.

Cincy up 7-0 early. Rematch from last week. Delany's dream.
-
It would be SO weird playing a team 2 weeks in a row. Just thinking back to when I played in HS as a left tackle. You'd be really familiar with that guy lined up across from you. Might be tough on pass-rushers, as the blocker has seen/dealt with all your moves. DC would need to come up with some new blitzes or something.
-
Has anyone complained about the East - West divisions? After 3 years of idiocy, at least they got things right.
-

30-23 in OT.
I'll be waiting for OAF to comment favorably on the defensive struggle. ;)

I think they are fine. The original nonsense was not fine.

Ohio Joe with a TD pass. Georgia must bring pressure

He had about a minute to find his WR on that play.

Rushing 3 isn't gonna work. Didn't work for us, not gonna work for Georgia.

I only saw the last third of the game, but it was fun to watch. I could mention the OU defense allowing the backup QB a perfect rating until OT, but I won't. I'm happy for the Sooners positioning themselves to be in the playoff.
-
And Purdue has sold out it's stadium to a car dealer.
Rohrman Field at Ross-Ade Stadium

At least they are keeping the Ross-Ade part. So it's not terrible.

Heh! You could do more. You could mention that that guy was the 3rd-string QB. ~???
Of course, the WR was being covered by a 3rd-string DB on at least one of those bombs.
Alex Grinch's defense is high-risk/high-reward, at least with the so-so talent and lack of depth he inherited from Mike Stoops.
-
He was really good until just before the midway point of this season. That makes me think it's an injury...not major enough to sit, but nagging and affecting him just enough.
-
On the Dr. Pepper cheating wife commercial - the "she uses propane"..."tastes the same to me"..."WHAT?!?" exchange is classic.
I'm a charcoal-only kinda guy, too. If my woman said "tastes the same to me," I'd be single immediately.
-
XII game was a quality game.
-
FAU beat UAB in CUSA.
Appalachian State, who once beat the Wolverines as an FCS team, won the Sunbelt vs the Ragin Cajuns.
-
Wait, Appt State beat Michigan? Does anyone have a link to the box score?

I don't have the box score, but here are the highlights.

Good Lord did this jackwagon just say that even if Georgia loses this game, they might go to the CFP over Oklahoma?

Yes, he said that. I laughed at the homerism of CBS. It's almost as bad as ESecPN.

Cincy trying to pull one out!

No champs in Cincy this year. I love the home field in champ games, but it kind of screwed Cincinnati. Had to play at Memphis twice in Memphis

The CBS clowns certainly think so.
I never really thought Georgia was all that great, but here they were today, coming in at #4. They got a lot of mileage from that win over ND.

If Ohio State gets a win tonight- it will be a lot better game then the SEC game has been. In that case I would not disagree.

42-24, Buckeyes.

Ehh...and Florida and Auburn.

So what happened here? Neuheisal said that and then the other guy, Brian Jones, immediately shot it down. So are the brass at CBS sports telling them to push the pro-SEC narrative and one is/one isn't, or what? What's the actual goings-on aside from Neuhiesal just sharing his opinion?
...and I can't help but notice that a person can scoff at what he said (rightfully so - it's absurd), but then in the next breath, defend Fox News. That's when I scoff.
-
I expect both the B10 and ACC CGs to be nipple waxings. Wisconsin and Virginia will both be yelling KELLY CLARKSON by the end of the night.

I don't know which jackwagon you heard say that, but Herbstreit and the audio guy ("Bear"?) for Game Day said that this morning. Herbie qualified it by saying "if Georgia loses a close one."
I hate ESPN and CBS both when their talking heads are opining about SEC teams. Suddenly, their powers of judgment and rational thinking depart, and all they can do is regurgitate Official SEC Talking Points.
-

Yeah, their QB seems like a poor-man's Denard Robinson.

The CBS post-game show - the studio guys.....the host and the black guy were like NOPE after Rick Neiheisal suggested that at halftime.
Herbstreit is there because football fans have wives and the Bear guy is there because people love to gamble.
-
Who's even talking about Fox News? Only you.
Why is that?
Because I see a correlation between two media entities that are hogwash.

Nobody appointed me poobah of appropriate posting (or anything else), but I can't see any reason for you to do that other than to try to score political points without being called on it by the mods.

Florida State hires Mike Norvell of Memphis.
-
Sigh. It's not political at all. Not scoring points. Not making a larger point. I made a direct, OBVIOUS point about one comment made about college football and one network that are equally absurd.
Feel free to focus on, you know, football. If there's a strong reaction to the post and continued pissiness, it sort of proves my point.

Meanwhile, it's raining in Phoenix.

So far not too shabby for Big Red.

At a glance, Virginia looks like Auburn, but without much talent.

I don't know much about his teams either. He did OK with Memphis, but he inherited an apparently good program from Justin Fuente.

No one, myself included, wants to discuss any pros or cons. Why is this drawing your ire? Think about it. Why is this warranting multiple posts??

This is something OSU has not experienced this year. UW is playing its best game of the year, so far. I'm impressed, but very leery. I know what OSU can do.
-
There should be a phone call coming down from the commissioner very soon.
-
Great start by Wisconsin, but there's still like a 50% chance OSU scores 30+ points by the end of the game.
-
Let’s see if that fake punt is a game changer.
-
Does Day make that same call if Ohio St really needs this game?

Fields indecision has been there all season, hurting them today

What the hell is going on here?

Badgers are playing so well. I am really surprised here. I knew they were a very good team, but they are looking great right now.

Buckeyes on target to have three wins over conference champs but not the way I'd like

I was told OSU's advantage over LSU was defense......:96:

Wisconsin with a great game plan too. Ohio State very much off balance on both sides.

Did you rebut that notion somewhere?

I was told OSU's advantage over LSU was defense......:96:
Wisconsin's defense is better than LSU's defense. Aranda is a great DC, but he had better players in Madison than he does now.

Ohio State fans getting pretty ticked

if that first kid wins the Dr Pepper thing, he'll be the 3rd-wealthiest person in West Virginia

OSU gets the ball to start the 2nd half. That will be telling as to how this game will go.

Hooo boy.....I guess God didn't like the other kid as much.

Not a bad start. Let's see if the defense also got some juice

Telling, yes.

Big stop there

Special teams not helping the Badgers

It's starting to fall apart now. Needed that kick to go through.

Well that was a wobbly play.

OSU doing what OSU does. I don't like it, but, it is what it is.

Same as the first game

Kiss my grits.

Need the O to do something to keep the D off the field, and they can't. This game is over.

Sorry, man.
On a lighter note...
You know in Tombstone where Doc says to a fat Billy Bob Thornton - "Oh, I had forgotten you were here"......I just had that experience with the ACC CG.

I actually did that when I read your post

What an amazing second half.
Oklahoma is obvious at #4.
Clemson is obvious at #3.
The only debate is tOSU/LSU for #1/2.
I'm pretty sure it is either:
- #1 tOSU vs #4 OU IN ATL and #2 LSU vs #3 Clemson in Glendale, or
- #1 LSU vs #4 OU in ATL and #2tOSU vs #3 Clemson in ATL
-
How much are semifinal tickets? I might go.
.
Everyone keep your fingers crossed that Florida winds up ranked ahead of Georgia, okay?
-
Certainly looks like Clemson OSU in the Fiesta Bowl
-
While I'm guessing LSU will be number one, if the score holds OSU will have double digit wins every game
-
Mmmmmm, modest moral victory.
Can UW sign up for Cotten Bowl vs Memphis? Or some other NY6 vs whoever other teams don't want?
-
Wisconsin deserves the Rose Bowl. We'll see if they get what they deserve.
-

Should be in the Rose Bowl. I'd be really surprised if they are not.
I'm tired of Ohio State. Screw 'em.
Bed time.

I'm tired of Ohio State. Screw 'em.
I'm tired of Wisconsin, toughest out to get in the B1G.

Any chance OSU gets moved down to #3?
ESPN is campaigning for LSU to be #1, beating 5 top 10 teams. (Although 3 of those 5 teams are no longer in the top 10...)
Clemson (defending champions) has spanked their last 6 opponents by 30 plus points.
OSU just survived their last 3 games.
OU the other champ, but has 1 loss.

First no, no chance. Clemson is about to become the first team to ever make the CFP without a top-25 win, they aren't jumping a team that has four or five (depending on if Cincy drops out).
Second, the only difference is Jersey color. The #2 seed wears home jerseys.

Survived 3 teams better than anyone Clemson played.

I agree, but Minnesota would be a nice story. I think Wisconsin is more deserving aside from that.

I'm not so sure Penn St is "less deserving" than Wisconsin.
Their loss to Minnesota was a "better loss" than Wisconsin's loss to the Illini.
Against OSU they only lost by 11, whereas Wisconsin lost first by 31 and then by 13.

"I want to make sure I help these guys finish out right," Taylor told reporters Saturday night. "We earned the right to be here, we also earned the right to have one more."
JT23 on playing in the bowl game.

The conference obviously has three teams "deserving" of the RB. That will be interesting.

From the Milwaukee paper.
It was going to be a fairly sober postgame media gathering anyway after Wisconsin's 34-21 loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship, but it was made all the quieter without Chris Orr.
The Badgers play-making and vocal linebacker wasn't available after he left the Big Ten championship game Saturday in the second quarter with a head injury, a loss that looked more and more critical as the game wore on. The Badgers had already lost outside linebacker Noah Burks in the first quarter before losing Orr, as well.
"He was able to come back out on the field after taking his pads off and stuff," said Badgers linebacker Zack Baun, who finished with a sack in the game to break a tie with Orr for the team lead in sacks, now at 12½.
"He's a leader when he's on the field, and it's just different."
Burks was lost for the game with a leg injury on Ohio State's first offensive drive on the game, when the Badgers were able to stop the Buckeyes on fourth down. In the second quarter, Garrett Rand and Chris Orr both left the field with what appeared to be head injuries; Rand came back in short order, but Orr was done for the night.

All true, but the idea that UW is more deserving than PSU is strictly ignoring the context and setup of the divisions. PSU happens to be in the same division as OSU, so they're less deserving.
Hogwash.
.
Wisconsin lost worse to OSU (as you said) and a much worse other loss (as you said). We can ignore the game in Indy and avoid punishing UW for having to play the game.
.
By any measure aside from 'who was higher in the standings', PSU "deserves" the Rose Bowl more.

Didn't see any of the night games, but condolences to the Badgers and congrats to the Buckeyes. Sounds like Wisconsin was way up but tOSU mounted a comeback? I bet that was some high drama around here.
