The wife flew to San Francisco for her brothers birthday, leaving me with a house full of kids who don't properly appreciate college football. But they are gonna learn today
-
Hate to do it I know - but proper Pigskin Etiquette is one of life's finer social graces - trust me on this.Damn flew to the west coast for a birthday?Nothing says I care quite like a card,ya know something short and sweet - "Money's short, times are hard, here's your fargin' birthday card" - see it can be done

It won't be too bad. The hardest time is during the week, when I have to drive all over the city to get them each where they need to go. I wish it was like in Badge's time and a horse and buggy would carry them down to the schoolhouse if they weren't plowing a field.
-
What a grand time it was.
-
Damn straight,I Love It!
-
Still planning my noon watch. Probably going to be flipping back and forth between Sparty-Michigan and PSU-Windiana. 3:30 will be OSU Rutgers for at least half an hour, then peaking in on Auburn-Georgia.
-
I'll have the Badgers on the big screen and IU/PSU on the smaller one, with the kitchen TV showing MSU/UM. After that, the best game wins.
Being human, I look at train wrecks. We all do. So, I'll peek in at the OSU game from time to time, to see if they can get to 100.
-
Making my marinara this morning, and then going to braise meatballs and sausage in it all day. This will be secondi, served with deep fried mushroom risotto balls. Primi course will be a spinach pasta tossed in a brown truffle butter finished with fresh parmesan.
Antipasti will be a simple array of sausages and cheeses, with some olives on the board.
Kind of a Tuscan way to eat a meal.
Not sure on the dolce. I'd be fine with a finish of Grand Marnier, or something like that, with a biscotti.

They have only done it once, and it was over 100 years ago, vs Oberlin, with Chic Harley at the helm. 128-0, in 1916.
-
There are four current Big Ten teams that have posted four 100+ point games. Can anyone name them?

Some saturdays I come here just to see what you have brewing today. You don’t disappoint! I often get my inspiration ( copycat) from something you are making.

Finally, some cooler weather here in southeast florida. Sunny, breezy, high 60s, and at last, little humidity
Thankful.
-
No grand plans for cooking here, today. Kids' soccer tournaments have the entire weekend booked. I'll record my game and watch it... at midnight maybe???

I'm pretty certain that Michigan is one of them because the year that they achieved their biggest win over TOSU (86-0 IIRC) it was only, I think, their fourth or fifth biggest of the year with triple-digit wins over MSU, WVU, and Iowa (I think I have those right).

Just reading this made me feel underdressed.
-
I'm starting with some italian sausage for breakfast and probably get some wings at halftime - Florida plays at 10am out here. Might do pork stir-fry, who knows.
No truffles, though.
-
I got the truffles when we were in Florence last spring. They are in a jar, but it's better than I can do here. Buying one fresh truffle is not a good idea. I little goes a long way, and it would take me longer to use it than it would last.

Not sure if there can be humidity when it's 13-32 degrees all week, gonna be sunny & clear and hit in the mid 40's tomorrow

Oh, there is humidity. That and a little wind is what makes the cold go right through you, and get into your bones.

I had to change a tire on my wife's car last night, so now lower back is a little stiff. Just glad I was in my toasty, well lit garage to do it. Gotta hand it to Subaru, all the parts I needed were in the cargo hatch. Nicely organized. Tell your peeps #Jhetfield, well done.

Michigan is definitely one of them.

Not down in IC today. HS BB season starts this morning.
This is, by far, the Gophers hardest game left. The last time the Gophers went to Mordor with a lot at stake was 2003, and they managed to lose 5 fumbles in a whooping that wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicated. Incidentally, that was my very first road game, and I saw that tailgating wasn't just a pregame thing.
-
I know Nebraska is one of them.
Haskell, Creighton, Wesleyan, and Kearney St.
-

Also correct.

I know Chicago scored 100 on some teams, but they are not a current member.
When I think of older powerhouses, Minnesota and MSU come to mind as schools likely to have done it.
-
Oh, there is humidity. That and a little wind is what makes the cold go right through you, and get into your bones.
Ya but then it gets into the lake and it freezes so you can go Ice Fishing, sheesh.Chicago scored 100 on who?The Federation of the Blind? The Amish? The Old Order of the Oddfellows?
-

Minnesota and MSU are indeed the other two.
Chicago only did it twice, fwiw.
Michigan State is the only one that has been on both ends of a 100 point beat down.

My kid from Texas is flying in at 10:30 AM. The wife is abed (she walks around every so often with a walker, but has stayed on our third floor). It's nice weatherwise. I don't want to leave the wife alone for long but she can make it to the bathroom on her own now. The other kid if coming for Christmas, and this kid is joining us in January for Baseball Camp in Sarasota.
We had plans to stay a week in Hilton Head but the surgery intervened.

Ah with visions of Sid Finch dancing in your head

Sid Bream is one of the coaches at baseball camp. He is a fun guy.

Three of them is the M Schools. M*ch*g*n, M*ch*g*n State, and Minnesota, and they all did it in the 'aughts. the 1900's.
Since I don't know the 4th let me guess it's a new team? Rutgers been playing forever possible to have a great team at some point? Although it would be kinda cool to keep my "M" mnemonic if it was Maryland. Nebraska has had some amazing teams, but were they great before WW2 when 100 point games were more common?
EDIT: Oh I didn't read the question correctly, I didn't read the 2nd "four" Not sure State has 4, but I'll stick with TTUN and Minnesota.
-
It will be interesting to see how OSU tries to keep the score "down" today. I recall Cumberland was punting on first down back in the day. OSU might try punting early if it's say 70-3 in the third quarter.
-
Hitting the bars for Spartans-Wolverines. Can’t wait - this is lately my favorite rivalry going due to how much these teams make it clear they don’t like each other. The “little brother” shots, the coaches having nothing nice to say about each other, Dantonio’s comments getting under the skin of the Wolverines fanbase, Devin Bush kicking up the Spartans logo.
-

Weren't they involved in the 220-0 game?

Yep, all four of Michigan's were from 1902-04; vs Buffalo, Michigan State, Iowa and West Virginia.
Minnesota had their four in 1903 and 04; vs Grinnell (x2), MacAlester and Twin Cities High School (really?).
Nebraska's were from 1905-17; vs Creighton, Haskell, Kearney State, and Nebraska Wesleyan.
Michigan St from 1904-31; vs Hillsdale, Olivet, Kalamazoo and Ripton.
1931 was the last time a Big Ten team did it. The last time it happened at any level was 2003 (Rockford over Trinity Bible).
-

Could have been a lot worse, had Tech not taken their foot off the gas in the second half.

When i was kid I had a book called "Strange but True Football Stories"That was in there along with wrong way Roy Reigels. The Knute Rockne win one for the gipper story, some guy who came off the bench and tackled an opponent running for a TD and others

I'm rooting for 100 today for the Bucks. I think I heard this back in the 90ies and just keep it with me as a random factoid:
OSU, PSU and Wisconsin all broke the century mark once. TTUN, MSU, and Minney have done it Multiple.
I'll have to modify it to include Nebraska now.

Off to an Escape Room party. Daytime food & drink. Doubtful I'll get to see any football til later.

Purdue football is on bye, and the basketball game against Chicago State is not televised, so I'm missing most CFB today.
I told the wife* that due to the schedule this was the perfect day for us to take the kids [and some friends] up to the apple orchards in Oak Glen, CA.
If I'm lucky, I'll get back to catch the end of MN/IA, but then tonight I'll probably be checking out PAC-12 action (UCLA/UT followed by USC/Cal).
The wife already has her pasta sauce in the crock pot, and then she'll be having the eldest make meatballs and we'll boil some pasta for an easy dinner.
(* By which I mean she told me we're going to the apple festival and I rationalized that thankfully I wasn't missing any games.)
-
I don't think UW has ever broken 100. Back when PC was still the OC under BB, they hit 70 a couple of times (IU and NU). But never 100 - unless it was some game before helmets??
-

It was. They hung 106 on Whitewater of all teams, back in 1890.
-
Watching a game on CBS reminds me (commercials) that people still watch sitcoms. Ick.
-
Yeah, Shea Patterson sucks.
First play of the game he panics and tries to leave a clean pocket and runs himself into a sack. Kid has a bird brain.
-
This play-calling is stupid.
-
That's funny. Coaches try like hell to get their QB to have that internal clock and it's so ingrained that once that internal clock expires, they crap the bed, even if they have good protection.
-
Oh boy... gonna be one of those days for the Badgers.
-
Sparty moved the ball but chose to give it back to Michigan
-
Posted up at bar now, Michigan-MSU already has the feel of an ugly, low scoring game.

MSU up early and taking late shots on Michigan - these are the Spartans I came to see.
-
Oof rough drop
-
It was 14-10 UNL went down starirs came back up and it's UW17-14 what happened in 1 minute?
edit now it's 24-14
-
Man, I'm confused/frustrated. PSU linebacker leads with the helmet, clear helmet to helmet collision, knocks the IU player out, leading to a fumble.
It really seems like they just rewarded PSU for targeting. which is kinda 100% against what I thought they were going for?
-
Trivia: How many B1G teams have ever been in the CFP top 4?
-
Badger coaches had their heads up their asses on that final drive. Gotta get 7 on that, and they settle for 3 - with a time out on the board.
Crock O' Chit.
-
What happened to Tua? He's in really bad shape
-
Tua just took a big shot from MSU’s passed rush and he’s being shouldered/carted off field. Not only is his leg in too much pain to put weight on but his nose is bleeding into a towel. This is the fault of the coach’s. Tua was already hobbled and beat up during and after the LSU loss - why trot him out against a Miss St team they’ll beat anyway? Prideful Heisman hopes?

Ankle surgery.

And the announcers with an incredible justification for a non-targeting call.... The IU wide receiver lead with his helmet first. WHAT!?!

Not running RPOs at this point is just ignorant with how often refs just don't bother calling lineman downfield
-
Donovan Peoples Jones sighting. How the HELL is this kid not a premier offensive weapon in the country with his level of talent? He's a freak athlete and he goes literally weeks without touches. It baffles the hell out of me.
-
Not running RPOs at this point is just ignorant with how often refs just don't bother calling lineman downfield
they haven't EVER called it. Auburn with the right QB's (Cam Newton) and Oregon with Chip Kelly built mini-dynasties and offensive juggernauts with lineman downfield and I'd bet neither one of them ever got called for it once. Makes zero sense to run a pro-style offense the way the college game is set-up today. The rules and ways refs call games are geared toward spread. None of the high-school QB's you recruit play in pro-style- they are all running spread and read-option.
-
DPJ has talent it seems - at least the times I've watched Collins has been more consistent.Dunno if Harbaugh,O.C.or QB just not getting him the rock
-
Badger D is completely confused today. Leonhard's kids have had few answers for Martinez and his multi-faceted abilities.
Time for a healthy dose of run game. Get thing over with, and get the hell out.
-
Wild 1st half in Lincoln,Badger D was having a day off.UW/PSU/M all seem to be pulling away
-
IU with the worse 4th and 1 play ever designed.
Next play TD for PSU. Lions up 13, stadium rocking, PSU dancing, IU crying.
I'm gonna call this game over. IU cracked.
-
Lewerke has to connect there, well doable prolly not to be expected.M turn over could shake things up
-
Was Tua hurt again for Bama?
Edit evidently carted off with Tide ahead 35-7,not too bright there Nick
-
Unsportsmanlike first a brief flex? I’ve disagreed with almost every official call this game including MSU’s first touchdown that they overturned, which was absurd.
-

We got it called last week because Lewerke gave a high five in the end zone to a non teammate. I have no idea what that rule is supposed to stop

If the weasels look this lousy on the road against a team that can't tackle, what are they going to look like on the road against a team that can?

In other news Tua might be done for the year. Has a hip injury.

Hoosiers are still in it.

Highlight of the game there for Michigan - blocked punt! TD next play!
-
At least our defense sucks this year, so our games aren't as boring as last year
-
False start changes 4th and 1 to 4th and 6, so we punt. Punt blocked, next play TD. That just about sums it up
-
Wow, Mizzou got screwed on that call. Should have been an INT for the Top Gun Tigers!
-
Michigan kicks too many FG's. Have to get into the end-zone.
-

honestly didn't think MSU would ever be this bad on defense.

Penn State with a heck of a drive
-
How has Lewerke managed to stay healthy and start every game this season? His OL gives him no help.
I guess that’s like asking how Dantonio has stayed sober enough to keep coaching this year. He does NOT look sober right now - bloodshot eyes, inflamed red nose, wearing same beanie worn by bums that I see wine-tasting beneath the freeways.
-

There is a first time for everything, and this is the first time I've ever heard 482 yards of offense and 320 rushing yards called lousy.
Thankfully for your boys, they got to play Nebbie without Martinez (a recurring theme for the Goophs this year, facing a team's 2nd or 3rd #1 QB).
Good luck to the Gerbils today.

I thought you said that you weren't going to watch another MSU game with Dantonio as coach?

Until today the OL had actually been really good in pass blocking, but shit in run blocking.

Iowa CB Ojemudia out with an injury. Riley Moss, a regular visitor to the burn unit, will start in his place.
-
That was one dejected group of Rutgers cheerleaders that Dobbins ran into the middle of on that TD.

I said the same thing when Cooper was in C-Bus and beat M 1 time in his 1st 11 times playing them :41:

Well on their way to 100, and the conference cutting back to 13 teams, from 13.1 teams.
-
Rutgers had a drive that ended in a punt instead of a turnover on the second play. That's progress.
-
And we're under way in Iowa City. Should be a really good football game.
Can the Hawks get their first big win? Can the Goophs handle the pressure of wearing the bullseye?
Strap 'em up, boys.
-
Also have ND and Navy going at it. The score is rather shocking to me. WTF is going on in that game? I've not seen a lick.

Ya last time i checked ND was up 31 zip

Sounds like Florida.

OSU falling behind the pace to get to 100.
And they have a 35 point deduct for allowing a TD to a Patriot League school.

Gophers seem opposed to tackling

Goophs better get bigger paddles
Or maybe more than one?

Like I said, this is the Gophers hardest game left.

Iowa in Kinnick with something to play for? Choke job city.
Iowa in Kinnick with nothing but a spoiler role? MAGIC

Like I said, this is the Gophers hardest game left.
Was really kinda hoping to catch the Goophs undefeated. Still hoping, but not looking too good.
-
Definitely not gonna crack 100.
-
Once you hit that peak, the opponent almost doesn't even matter. I'm rooting for the Gophers, but they're battling uphill vs psychology.

So far, @Cincydawg (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=870) has this nailed.

Again, I blame Saban for the unnecessary beating Tua has undergone this year! Trotting a clearly hobbled, un-recovered Tua Vs an overmatched MSU team is ALL on the Bama coaches. Playing Tua Vs LSU last week was a more understandable risk because he’d sat the few weeks prior, the game was higher stakes, and the staff could drug him up given the localized nature of his injury. Fast forward to this Saturday and Tua was left even more beat up in the wake of playing LSU and, now injured on clean hits by MSU’s pass rush, Bama is left much worse off! Does Saban tell the medical staff what to do? At this point Tua’s focus should be toward readying for the NFL draft. Not Auburn if this is how the Bama program is going to belittle him.
-
We have a game in Iowa City!!
Barnum found his second paddle.
-
Rutgers strikes again.
-
WOW dropped, ballsy called,PJ get flagged, way to go coach, that might bite em later
-
Gophers got hosed. That was clearly a late hit.
-
Im not sure it would have made any difference on possession, as the foul occurred after the end of the play.
-
If PJ doesn't get called I'd think it would be an auto 1st
-
C'Mon Gophs,that wasn't a catch,will it be reviewed?Yes 3rd and 11

Sacked, alright PJ gets a reprieve - sort of
-
PJ is (ahem) kicking himself for not taking 3 points the last time down there.

Auburn back in business
-
Ehh, either a player is healthy enough to play or not play. Tua could play. And yes, Bama was up, but it was still just the 2nd quarter. Players get hurt sometimes. I don't see any rational reason to play the blame game on Saban.

Rutgers tires FAU for most points against the Buckeyes with 21

yeah the first half looked like a different team and coaching was different too
not totally happy about it but they can recover but cannot lose another

I’m enjoying Stanford’s lost season, not just 4-5 and getting ready to lose to WSU right now, but a lot of their losses have come in blowout fashion, even tonight, down 49-22.

The Bearcats are down 10-0 in the second.

What's the best defense Baylor plays this year? It obvioulsy isn't OU's.

That would be frustrating as a coach - why my team didn't do better on the road vs lesser teams...unless I was the culprit, of course.

Baylor forever
-
Matt Rhule might as well print himself some money tonight
-
They're really locked in!
-
Man I think the defensive sub rule needs re-worked.
Watching OU-Baylor, OU makes a sub, and lines up to play. Baylor walks on their sub, and walks off his replacement using the whole 25 second clock forcing OU to call a time out.
On the other side; I've seen Auburn get 2x touchdowns, different games, by the refs not holding up the play. I see the Defender sprinting to position and the Refs allow the Tigers hike the ball early and pass it to the wide open 11th man since the defense didn't get a chance to sub.

Sooners with a very fortunate penalty call that leads to a touchdown

Maybe 10.

Yeah, cause Bama and LSU played a game where nobody had a big lead. Wait . . . .
EDIT: Why do you persist in grinding this ax?

So much for the whole "what if Navy is the highest ranked Go5 team with the Army game pending.
Yeah, never mind.

45 in a Bama-LSU game

Sooners getting their second wind, they score 6 here the monkey will be on Baylors back

No penalties and no turnovers here in the second half. Those were killers as Baylor ran it out to 28-3.

Haven't seen much today but did cash my 2 way w Bama Fla covers. Bad sit. For Tua. That reads a lot like Bo Jackson's hip inj. Of course w Bo it was described as an injury suffered due to his enormous strength almost self inflicted as he was trying to escape a tackle. Tua's looked like a bad fall w a lot of weight coming down on him. We are fragile creatures.

What happened sooners were in the red zone - turn over?

Hurts fumbled inside the one.
Then we got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. Herbstreit thought it should have been offsetting flags, but, hey, the game's in Waco.

WOW,alright I'll walk them in this time

Just having a bit of fun...backed up by facts. You can cite one SEC game like that, how many times has a XII team lost while scoring 40+ pts? I've already studied this and it's legit.
-
So how many times has it happened?
-
Cincinnati wins on another walk off FG, this time vs S Florida.
-
More than average, lol. I don't remember the specifics!
-
I will say great halftime adjustments by OU's defense. Baylor has about half the total yards it seems like they have, because they've done absolutely nothing in the 2nd half.
-
You know how they say misery loves company? Well Arizona State completely botched the ending in losing to Oregon State tonight, 35-34, opting to go for two when they should've just taken the extra point after scoring an otherwise game matching TD with only 1:20 left. If that isn't bad enough, thanks to TOs and a defensive stop, ASU was primed to get possession back with :30 left, but no, a pass interference on 4th and 2 nixed that. Why was Oregon State going for it on 4th down anyway?!?! Now let me go turn off the TV before Oregon-Arizona gets ugly real quick. Both ASU & Arizona have lost FOUR straight. The Territorial Cup will determine who's the worst in the Pac 12 this year. Misery loves company!

Oklahoma mounted its greatest comeback win in program history. Down 28-3 in the 2nd quarter.
-
The 2 lowest-ranked undefeateds both lost....hmmph. Both were underdogs. Both put up a good fight.

So which game better fits your theory--OU 34, Baylor 31, or LSU 58, Ole Miss 37?
-
Why does it bother you so much?
-
Why does it bother you so much?
Because you keep making a point of it. You keep grinding that ax. And every time you do it's with the implication that the SEC doesn't play games like that.
And now you don't seem to want to own your own posts on the subject, so you make it about me. You want to take your shots, but you don't want any rebuttal to them.
Here's another one for you, from today. West Virginia 24, Kansas State 20. And another--Iowa State 23, Texas 21. A defensive struggle if it's two SEC teams playing a game with scores like those. But in the Big 12, meh! Just more games between two mediocre (i.e., non-SEC) teams.
Meanwhile, LSU 58, Ole Miss 37. That of course, proves that LSU is the greatest team in all the land, because the Tigers held the 4-7 Rebels to their 3rd-highest point total of the season.
You didn't say the last, but I certainly didn't see you posting any comments about how bad LSU's defense was playing today.
Maybe you made some and I missed them.
-
The fact that XII teams play worse defense than other P5 conferences isn't news. I guess I'm just a broken record that should be tossed out. Yes, LSU's defense sucked today. Yes, their defense is much worse than it's been in the past. But I've commented on that - that it's due to their more wide-open offense (and that Bama has been doing the same thing). They're playing a lot like XII teams, for better or for worse.
The XII-plays-no-defense narrative is from many games over the course of many years, so pin-pointing the 2010 Bama-LSU game or the 2019 LSU-OM game pales in comparison.
The XII playing no defense is part of why OKST was on the outside looking in, in 2011. It's part of why OU had no chance in the playoff last year. I guess my crime is citing it too much. Well, I guess I'm just a limited person.
-
Very limited

Stuck it out until 28-21 in the 4th when the Oktoberfests caught up to me
-
Sucks for Alabama and Tua. If he's done and they don't have a suitable backup....does that sink their playoff shots?
-
I don't think it changes anything. I've been told here that Alabama shouldn't have made the playoff in the first place, so ho-hum.

Correctly told here. Yes.

Yup.

So after stewing a little bit on yesterday's loss, I'm neither surprised nor crushed. Similar to the Vikings coming off the Minneapolis Miracle two years ago by going to Philadelphia and getting crushed, I wasn't surprised at how flat the Gophers came out.
One thing PJ and Co. HAVE to get better at is burning their timeouts. Fine, if you want to be unorthodox on how you use them, whatever. But every time they've had to burn a timeout, it's because it's clear that no one knows WTF is going on.
I'm REEEEEEEALLY trying not to MMQB the decision to go for it on the play that ended with the unsporting foul/late hit on TJ. On one hand, 3 points there makes a big difference down the line. On the other hand, slants to the WR has been working in the second half, and getting the ball to your best playmakers in space is rarely a bad decision.
Also, I've seen that Iowa is an astonishing 5-1 at home vs. Top Ten teams since 2008. It used to be that MNC bids died at the Miami Orange Bowl. Not anymore. They die in the depths of Mordor.
Still, after all of that stupidity, Tanner and Co. had the ball with 2 minutes to go and a chance to win in a place where road wins have been hard to get. I'm not pleased, but nor do I have steam coming out of my ears. On to Evanston.
-
I think the Gophers showed they are not a mediocre team at all. This was a tough loss indeed, but I suspect a lot of teams (as noted) would lose at night in Kinnick this year.
And they were close.
-
I think the slant to TJ was a great call, he isn't known for drops. If he catches it cleanly he probably scores. A tough break on the drop. Then two more tough breaks with no call on the late hit and then the call on PJ.
I can only imagine PJ said something to a ref while on the field
-
Badger coaches had their heads up their asses on that final drive. Gotta get 7 on that, and they settle for 3 - with a time out on the board.
Crock O' Chit.
much celebration and toasts for Husker fans when the defense only gives up 3

It'd be 6-0 if Terrelle Pryor had scrambled for 15 yards on a 4th and 10 with less than 4:00 to go in the game.
I think the slant to TJ was the right call and an unfortunate drop. From an objective perspective, I'm not sure why the flag was a dead ball foul and not a late hit. From an Iowa fan perspective, I'm upset that I even had to live through it, since Koerner dropped the easiest INT of all time earlier in that drive.
