I'm hoping we can "buy" our board from Scout. If not, we will need to archive our recipes, beer thread, etc. There is a lot of history made with all of you knuckleheads over the years. I'm not going to let that go.

:) :57:I hope so.  Both spots looking thin to me. Of course, it is that time of year.

Once spring practice starts, there should be a little more going on here.

I'm still working the data for importing legacy (threads/posts) from over there...

There are issues with matching tables that's pretty complicated, but if i was a trainer, i haven't picked up the towel yet.  I can't decide whether to treat the data like actual posts or to just dump them in one spot.... I like the idea of posts, so we can pick up where we left off- but with that comes complications of importing usernames... either way, it's going to be a lot of work but I think worth it in the end, no?

Feels like we're walking the boxspring, couch, and all those cardboard cubes full of pots/plates through the door. It's time to move in. I have a few thoughts, and this seems as good a place as any to put them:

(1) Message board people are terrific at complaining about small changes in layout, even when those changes are better than what came before. I can be like that. It's difficult for me to separate the friction I experience with a website merely because it's just different (implying that soon I'll adapt and see the new thing as neutral or better) versus the friction I feel because there's a genuine problem.

This site seems pretty great, and I'm as thankful as anyone for it; still, I do at first blush have three examples. Hopefully I convey them constructively:

(a) the emoticons seem kind of teeny-bopperish [is it possible to add (or trade for) a more basic set?],
(b) the margins seem kind of narrow. As a consequence, much less text fits on the screen than at the last place [is it possible to indirectly solve that by reducing the font, if not directly by widening the margins?]
(c) if we widen the margins, I suppose the adverts would have to be placed more like at the last place (top, bottom, and in a stripe along the midsection) [I did happen to prefer that. Is it possible?]

(2) Since I have the freedom now, I'll be switching my screen name. CIMHB was better than dudekd (basically, my name), but despite being my eternal homeboy, the "C" is pretty outdated by now. So I have another s/n awaiting admin approval. This is a throwaway comment unless there's a "one s/n per IP address" rule, in which case, YOU GUYS, please, YOU GUYS, don't kick me out, YOU GUYS! :- )

Are we legally able to import content from the old board? Or is it all officially owned by Scout?

legitimately, it is 'scraping content' and illegal according to the terms of agreement... however, the old guard at scout didn't bat a lash and the new contact at CBSInteractive didn't seem to care, either.

the 'content' is being tossed- literally.  it will disappear unless we capture it.  if it were a street we were talking about the content being placed aside, it's legally up for grabs once it's placed there- and we've been informed that the garbage is placed on the curb.  ...... and that is how i'm considering it.

YOU'RE FIRED!!!!!!!!

seriously...

okay, you're hired again.

I appreciate your input and will absolutely address it.  I'm not married to anything here so anything is up for changes that suit you guys.  that simple.

I approved your other handle... and, I could care less about 'charter' members having multiple names...

the emoticons (is that what they're called?) are easily changed, and I'll get on that.

Great. Thanks!

Also, while quoting this post, I noticed that it doesn't quote-within-a-quote the post of mine you responded too. In part, this is totally fine. In fact, some threads on the old site became cumbersomely long when people over-used the quote-within-a-quote feature. On the other hand, sometimes you need the original quote to avoid reader confusion.

Also-also (aka God I'm a brat): that feature that keeps you in a thread after posting in it (rather than returning you to the message board table of contents) is a good one. I don't know about other users, but I liked that a lot on the scout site.

alright... more space between threads on the board index page (NOT the overall forum index)....

does that answer the bell?

Ah, two things:

(1) We shouldn't let me have this much unrejected input. A good way to do it might involve a quick list of features and a vote, either on this site or on the other (because if done now, maybe that will receive the most traffic and feedback.

(2) The part about the margins: What I meant regarded the view within a thread. Right now reading this message, less text fits on the page than we're used to because the text's right margin stops ~2 inches short of the right edge of the screen.

Others can chime in on whether that matters to the average user (it could just be me, in which case I wouldn't want you to make the change). But if it does matter, I can think of two possible solutions, either make it so (a) the right margin for text goes all the way to the right side of the screen or so (b) the font size is smaller or more can naturally be viewed within these same margins before scrolling.

I worked the font in em's, which is to say their size is a percentage of the viewing page size.  I had to do that to accommodate mobile and tablet users- which i'm surprised we have a substantial amount of......

I can go back and revisit it- and will be happy to do so.  It'll be a bit before i can get to it, though...

WRT the recipes thread, I'm assuming that the formatting will be different here so I'll need to make a new index eventually.  Question:  Could we delete the general discussion posts in that thread and just keep the recipes and comments on recipes?  The thread is pretty large and those may have been interesting at the time, but if they are from years ago nobody really needs to sort through them while looking for a recipe.  Just a thought.

It's a manual operation as far as I know.

Do you have time to do that? If so, I'll give you moderator rights over there.

I don't have time RIGHT NOW so doing it over there probably isn't an option.  However, assuming we are able to scrape that content and get it over here, I'd like to have those rights when I do the updated index.

I'm assuming that the pages on this new board will not exactly match the pages on the old board so I'll have to do a major update to the index anyway.  Additionally, I haven't added new recipes to the index in a few years so I'll want to do that.  If I can also delete posts that aren't specifically related to recipes while I'm at it, I think it would make the thread more user-friendly.

First:  Thank you drew for creating this board for us.  These aren't complaints, they are thoughts that I think would make it better if they are possible to accommodate.

Would it be possible to make the text box when typing a post a little larger.  When typing a post, particularly when quoting an earlier post, the text box is pretty small so it is hard to see it all at once.  Maybe that would encourage smaller posts and be a good thing for people like me, LoL.

I haven't figured out how to use the bullets and numbering yet but I'll probably get that in time.

Some of the non-recipe posts are relevant to the recipes, so we have to be careful. For example, discussions about the idiosyncrasies of prep and such are important. It's like a cookbook with a comment section.

Guys/gals,

Check out the comment section for this website that Drew set up. Remember, the intention is that this place is to make it ours.

I would also leave in things like comments on the recipes.  Ie, if I used one of your recipes and left a post saying that I thought it was really good or that I thought it could use more garlic, that should be left.  However, a comment about the game at which I used the recipe could be deleted.

Granted, this is still a manual process, but if you're trying to condense things, you could simply take the comments relevant to a specific recipe and pull them all into a single post for that recipe. And if there are unnecessary comments that aren't meaningful enough, just drop those and keep the important ones.
