Title: #8 Notre Dame (5-2) at #19 Michigan (6-2, 4-2) Post Game
Post by: Temp430 on October 23, 2019, 07:49:39 AM
Michigan's loss last Saturday night to Penn State was in some peoples eyes Michigan's best game of the year.  They'll have to play just as hard this Saturday night to have a chance to beat the Irish.

ND seems like a pretty sound team, to me.

Michigan may not be.

I think Michigan takes this one. Being at home is the key here. I see something along the lines of 24-20.

My "impression" is that "we" tend to over estimate the advantage of being at home these days.  I agree there is some advantage, and in some venues it can get to be appreciable and significant.  I think ND has some experience with a hostile environment where they played pretty well, and perhaps learned from some mistakes.

Well, to be fair, another team aside from ND played well in that same environment. Michigan is talented, and wounded. I think they come out swinging and finally unleash.

Harbaugh still hasn't beaten a rival other than Michigan State.

(as Michigan's HC, of course)

I agree badge. I think Michigan turned a little bit of a corner against Penn State and I feel like they dominated for slightly more than a half a really good football team on the road in a hostile environment   We all know Michigan tends to play better at home and I see them winning this game by 7 to 10 points at least

Can't quite decide what to think here. Think Michigan's defense will have an easier time. Not sure I think their offense will.

Michigan will win if they can just play smart and consistent, which they haven't all year, but if they can at least force more turnovers, commit fewer penalties, and the like, that may be enough. I think they're pretty evenly matched.

That said, they have a 10 game home win streak since the beginning of last year, while Notre Dame hasn't played (much less won) many big road games in recent years. I didn't see their USC game, but I wasn't that impressed with how they looked against Louisville or Virginia, either.

The team with the fewest TOs will likely win.  Heh.

Are turnovers mostly random unpredictable events?  I'd say so 80% of the time.

If you were a coach and you could quantify these items, how many yards per play would you be willing to give up for an extra turnover per game.

Explanation:
Suppose that there are two ways to coach tackling:

The answer can be zero or a fraction.  Ie, you might say "I would give up 0.5 yards per play for one turnover per game."

supposedly, Frost's d coordinator is willing to give up a fraction of a yard per play to get the turnover

unfortunately, It's not working at UNL like it did at UCF

At least in theory it makes sense.  An extra turnover per game might even be worth an extra yard per play.  Turnovers are big.

It was one drive, but give me McCaffrey over Patterson. I’m just tired of Patterson at this point.

I thought ND would at least keep it close especially in those conditions.

The 2-0 TO margin didn't help of course.

Texas lost the TO margin 4-2, and the game.

OU lost it 2-0, and the game, despite a furious comeback and an almost on side K recovery.  OU should not drop too far IMHO.

UGA lost to USCe 4-0 in TOM and the game.

Even the weather and the terrible John O'Neill officiating crew couldn't stop Michigan last night. Great to see the team finally play to their potential, especially in a big game. Looking forward to seeing them in person to crush Maryland next weekend.

Visitor generally brings the officials. So yeah, ND had them in the pocket.

The PI called on Hudson in the 3rd quarter was the worst call I’ve seen this year.  Took away an interception snd I don’t think Hudson touched the receiver.  I believe the flag was thrown by John O’Neil himself.
