Title: #4 Ohio State (7-0, 4-0) at Northwestern (1-5, 0-4) Post Game
Post by: medinabuckeye1 on October 17, 2019, 04:46:02 PM
I'm missing our old friend NUWildcat this week.  He would have started this thread a long time ago.

My understanding is that this game was originally supposed to be on FOX but due to the ALCS delay it has been relegated to BTN.  I don't get BTN and that usually isn't an issue for football but I haven't figured out how I am going to watch this game on Friday night yet.

Based on past history there is a pretty good chance that Northwestern will improve and beat at least one quality B1G team this year but I just can't see it this week.  Their defense did an admirable job of containing Wisconsin.  They held the Badgers to just 243 yards and only 24 points.  By way of comparison, UW had more than 400 yards each against MSU's and Michigan's defenses.  In spite of that, the Wildcats still lost by two scores and it wasn't even that close.  Wisconsin's 14-3 lead early in the third quarter seemed pretty much insurmountable because Northwestern couldn't generate any scoring of their own.  Northwestern ended up with 255 yards against the Badgers but 155 of that came after they fell behind 24-3 in the fourth quarter.  Ie, the Wildcats only managed 100 yards of offense while the game was in doubt.

Let the record show that the Badger defense scored 14 points in that game. The offense scored 10.

I’m not sure how this happens during your bye week but Ohio State is going into this game way more dinged up that at any other time this year

Looking like they’ll be without both their first string and second string left tackles and will probably have to juggle the line and start a player who’s never started before - albeit a prized recruit.  To this point in their offense of line has been extremely solid.

If Northwestern has one solid strength it’s their defensive line and I think they’ll be able to get some things done there

There also without their rising star linebacker , Browning, but I believe they’re deep at linebacker so I’m not too sure that will hurt too bad.

#4 Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0, 6-0) at Northwestern Wildcats (0-3, 1-4)
8:30 (Fri) - Evanston, IL - BTN
I'm sure this is exactly what Jim Delany was going for when he sold the Big Ten's soul for Friday night games.  Moving his conference's showcase program to BTN, on a Friday night, buried under a Yankees game, and...well, it being Friday night against a team so boring they make Michigan State look like Washington State.  The last time these two met, a Big Ten title was on the line, so maybe they were hoping for a hyped rematch?  Northwestern is so far from where they were a year ago that I honestly forgot until I was nearly done with this writeup that it was a Championship Game rematch.  Really, all coach Ryan Day can hope for out of his squad in this one is for his boys to come out and look sharp.  They had a home game, under the lights, with their special black alternates, against a ranked Michigan State team, but with a bye week last week, this Friday night game in Evanston is their only real football in the 20 days between that game and when #6 Wisconsin comes calling next week.  The Northwestern defense perhaps has a chance to at least hold Ohio State within striking distance, if Ohio State makes mistakes?  The Wisconsin offense took care of the supposed elite defenses of Michigan and Michigan State, but Northwestern actually did a solid job containing them.  Northwestern has already lost three games (Stanford, Wisconsin and Nebraska) where they only allowed one touchdown.  Problem is the dismal Northwestern offense allowed a total of three touchdowns over those games.  So not only does Northwestern's defense has to keep doing what it's doing, the Northwestern offense has to not just start doing something, but stop giving away points.  Against Wisconsin, the Wildcats were able to hold Taylor somewhat in check and Coan wasn't able to beat them.  Ohio State simply has too many weapons to try and shut down just one part of it.  And this Ohio State defense is unlike anything we've seen in Columbus since the Jim Tressell years.  It's the improvement there (#4 in SP+ Defense) that has led to most computer naming the Buckeyes as the best team in the country.  This feels like a punt of a breakdown, and I'm a little bummed that this is what we have in mid-October, but we saw a better version of Northwestern, in Michigan State, take a stab at the Buckeyes, seemingly not even play that poorly, and still come up way short.  I just don't see how Northwestern scores close to enough points to even hang with a C Ohio State effort.
OHIO STATE 38, NORTHWESTERN 7

B10 football does not belong on Friday Nights.  DVR re-watch maybe Saturday morning, but not sure even if that will happen.

how in the hell is Ohio State playing on a Friday? I feel like that's major disrespect to one of the greatest blue blood programs of all-time.

any chance that OSU overlooks this game and Fitz pulls an upset?

my guess is no way but weird things happen in College football

if Urban Meyer could drop games on the road to unranked teams in the B1G - Ryan Day can too.

There's a chance Fitz pulls the upset. But it's very small imo.

I'm pretty Coach Day has been showing his kids tape of them all week. NU is a good football team, with some bad luck. That defense is very salty, and they are at home (although OSU fans might fill the place up - definitely would if it was a Saturday game, as it should be).

OSU best not look past them.

Mrs. 847 and I talked about actually going to this game, but the club seats (we don't do benches anymore) were too expensive (for a non-Badger game, that is).

We'll be watching. My Dad (RIP) was a big NU fan.

The recipe for any monster upset is to create a lot of turnovers and then capitalize on said turnovers.

Friday Night Lights, high school game of the week! I didn't watch it. Just peeked at the 52-3 score. I thought it would be more like 31-7 with NU keeping it close for most of the game and then wearing down; it was close in Qtr. 1. Don't take it personally Ohio State, but nothing is ever as good as it seems although this was pretty good for Ohio State.

Just watched the coaches post game press conference's this morning. Coach Fitz is a class act. As difficult situation as he is in, he didn't complain about the officiating and in fact commented on the Referee retiring after this season and spoke of his admiration for him. I wish the best for him and his team going forward.

The Ohio State football team is the real deal this year.
they are the real deal just about every year lol.

The big difference has been that defense. It's SOOOOO much better. Chase Young is playing like a top 5 NFL draft pick and Jeffrey Okudah has taken the next step and has become an elite CB and future high NFL draft pick himself. At safety Jordan Fuller was already borderline elite- he's playing as good as he's always been.

Bringing in new defensive coaches and their young talented guys on defense maturing at the right time has made all the difference in the world for that team.
