In a span of ten days we've gone from brutally hot to now 40 degrees and wet. Luckily, soccer is over, I've got plenty of firewood, and I'm contemplating what to get for some good eats. Something that will cook low and slow - might try my hand at some barbacoa like substance if I spy a good chuck roast out in the wild. Also have some dried chilis on hand I should probably make a run at.

Very very nice weather here, perfect really, though we need some rain.
I watched the first half of the UVA-Miami game and wondered whether UVA's offense was that inept or Miami found some D. UVA looked OK between the 20s.
I went to bed, it was boring, I see not much changed in the second. This somewhat hurts Notre Dame's image, but they have Michigan yet to play. If ND loses to Michigan badly, they will drop of course and that hurts UGA's imagery. Of course, this sort of syllogism doesn't really work in CFB, but we have it.
-
Georgia's gonna be fine, win all the games and you're in the CFP. I don't see anyone in the SEC east that will beat you, and the Aggies certainly aren't going to beat you. Who else do you play from the SEC west?
-
Thursday high was near 100, Friday high was around 51 and it was raining. Afternoon high today around 68 and sunny, should be a glorious day, wish I were up in Dallas for the game.
-
UGA plays at Auburn, hosts A&M, and of course plays Florida. But if they are 12-1 and win the CG, they should be in despite optics.
The key remains beating Bama (or perhaps LSU).
If they lost to South Carolina or someone like that, well, they don't deserve it.
-
A beautiful morning in the Twin Cities. 31 degrees, snow showers, and a SW wind 15 gusting to 25 mph.
Going down to the Flats around 11.
-
The Pride Festival is this weekend, across the street from me in the park. We went over and walked around some last year, it was "interesting". Mostly folks out and about enjoying the nice weather and getting some drinks and food from food trucks (these are festival food trucks and not nearly as good as the usual food trucks).
I'll be watching football and tomorrow we're headed up into the mountains for a few days.
-
I may go up and turn on SEC N because they are in Athens today apparently. I'm not sure how long I can stand to listen, but whatever, the crowd may be fun. It's an early noon game today. I kinda like getting the game "out of the way" in a sense, but noon crowds are not as lively of course.
I wonder why that is, I've been up since 6 AM.
-
.
I wonder why that is, I've been up since 6 AM.
Yeah, 2:30 here. Insomnia sucks .
-
All sorts of good meat specials today. I landed on pork butt.
-
Yes. Beautiful crisp morning, My wife and I picked up a 5# shoulder as the butcher was closing last night. It is now on the Egg, I went with a carolina style rub. Also making chicken stock and my hot and spicy chex mix. That stuff's like crack. My folks are in town, and we have a bonanza of college football today.
-
Since we're not up at the Cotton Bowl for the game this year, we're doing "State Fair at home" so we've got the deep fryers ready to go. We'll be doing corny dogs, tater tots, fried oreos, fried twinkies, and funnel cake. I've also got a special treat, I've got some chopped brisket and cheese that I've stuffed into homemase flour tortillas, and we're going to deep fry those as well.
Should be in a complete food coma by 2. Wish me luck.

Missing most of the daytime kickoffs due to work, but after, driving up to brother’s to catch some of the later games.

Red River Shootout has been rendered kinda lame now, with the Big XII's asinine ccg model. If they are both great there will be a rematch that makes the first game rather pointless. If there is no rematch then one of both were a little down.

$5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy just mentioned on Game Today. Woo-Hoo!
-
Sooners up first. Texas defense doesn't look right
-
Oklahoma defense - better
-
Purdue with 2 quick TDs. If they can win today, they still have a reasonable shot to go bowling.
-
Texas with a lucky fumble recovery
-
Texas with a lucky fumble recovery
and ill advised pass from Hurt's to get another turnover.

Can I just throw out there that I love Fox's BIG NOON Saturday games. I love having a big game early and not jamming all of the big games at 8 on ESPN. I love Gus Johnson as an announcer, I think her it he best right now. (Though Herbie, always puts in a quality performance as well.)
-
Same - I even enjoyed Fox's pregame more too.
-
Looking like Purdue Maryland gonna be a shootout...
-
After the game we're going to hit some breweries with the in-laws, then come home and grill a couple tracks of lamb and some asparagus, and pair it with a Greek salad.
-
Purdue true frosh WR David Bell living up to billing. Sure-handed , with a big body and great body control to go up and get those contested 50/50 balls, which is necessary when you have no OL and are starting your backup QB...
-
Bell has been fun to watch. Milton Wright finally getting in on the action. Anthrop ain't a bad replacement for Moore.
I think Purdue has some talent at WR
-
People here need to go to the RRS. It's one of the few much hyped events that meets and exceeds expectations.
-
you would have think that advanced analytics have proven that running the shotgun on 4th and 1 is bad.
Toledo RB was tackled by 3 guys right at the handoff. And they are playing a D that gave up 62 to Kent State.
-
Hook 'Em!
-
USCe 17 Georgia 10 with 3:50 left
-
Man, it's so tough to be a defender.
CD Lamb for OU makes a reception, does this half hop and drops to his butt, Texas player is half a step late (and I would argue unintentionally) does helmet to helmet. Texas player (correctly) gets ejected.
Next play Lamb does the same half hop, Texas player pulls up and tries to tag him; instead Lamb spins and races 51 yards for a touchdown.

Mississippi State loses to Tennessee. Joe Moorhead to Rutgers?

UGA's got a 4th down late, down 7.....wow

Lamb, has had an amazing day. Man amongst Texas DB boys.

The worse MSU does, the better Mullen looks.

annnnnd of course they get a TD the very next play.

Georgia ties up South Carolina after a fourth down holding call on the Gamecocks

I assume we're all against ads and stuff on uniforms, but does Texas have enough logos on its jersey?
Longhorn,

If you're a captain, you have 5 patches. You're a billboard.

What the hell is happening with Michigan?
-
Are they Michiganing?

An actual pass interference keeps Gamecocks drive alive...

Let's go Cocks!

Ugh, just handed the game to Fromm. Dawgs only need like 20 yards.

man what a tough position to be in.
I was yelling to go for it.

What the hell was that Texas receiver thinking jumping up for a throw at knee high?
-
What the hell was that Texas receiver thinking jumping up for a throw at knee high?
Can I get a flag?
-
Wow, Georgia is getting greedy/stupid, running a play with 8 seconds left and no timeouts.
5 yard penalty is HUGE
-
What happened to the 10 second run off that was added to offensive penalties?
-
Michigan/Harbaugh are an embarrassment at this point. Up 28-7 on Illinois in the 3rd and all of a sudden it’s 28-25 into the 4th?
Embarrassing isn’t even the right word. This program is a joke and Harbaugh is a spaced out weirdo on meds that’s just a shell of his former self. I’ve lost all respect for the guy.
-
Va Tech did the same thing vs Miami last week.....up 28-0, loese the lead, but eventually won. It happens.
-
Why did muschamp think 57 yd fga> 4th and 3.
-
S.Car kicker misses 1st FG under 50 yds this year - Dawgs playing on borrowed time
-
The fact is, kickers are not football players.
They're soccer players who are bored and aloof 99% of the time.
Also, they cannot be trusted.
-
Georgia should have already lost twice to a bad South Carolina team on their backup QB.....
Carolina's best play in the 2nd half has been to call a random pass and let the QB scramble around.
-
Cocks!
-
HAHAHAHAH YESSSSSSSSS
-
The OU/UTA golden hat trophy thing is the worse 'trophy' I've ever seen. It's worse than the Arky/LSU boot.
-
How is Shea Patterson this bad? Harbaugh is literally ruining all the QBs.
-
Sooners win 34-27 despite leaving some points out on the field in the first half.
The score doesn't show it, but the Sooner defense played well.
-
The OU/UTA golden hat trophy thing is the worse 'trophy' I've ever seen. It's worse than the Arky/LSU boot.
I might agree if the Golden Hat had originated in 1996. As a physical item, it's not great. But it's 78 years old, so it has tradition going for it.
By contrast, the Golden Boot is 23 years old, made for a made-to-order rivalry after Arkansas' entry into the SEC.
Also, the players of the winning team cannot wear the Golden Boot.
-
Why do we need 5 dudes on the TV, Fox? Yeah, we need a moderator guy, sure a former player...I guess a former coach could lend a different perspective. We need 2 QBs? 2 pretty boys from helmet schools who are going to agree on everything?
Is it just me, or does Fox just do things a little bit different - a little bit too much - a little bit off? Personally, I'd just have the host and Meyer on there.
(And I'm just talking Fox sports - college football and baseball, mostly - not touching politics or news here).
-

The hat itself is fine, I was referring to the hat on the stand thing being passed around. Ditch the stand.
-
Re the Golden Hat, two former Sooners on the post-game radio coverage just reinforced your comment about the trophy. Ted Lehman, the guy who caught the Chris Sims pass that Roy "Superman" Williams flew in and deflected and ran it into the end zone, said that it is like a Wal-Mart cowboy hat that has been spray-painted gold.
It's not a real hat. It was originally cast in bronze and then was plated in gold some two or three decades later.
-
I can't believe USCe and UGA had four combined offensive OT opportunities and scored a combined three points.
One Int.
Two missed FG's.
One made FG.

in between these early games, my Dad and I were playing Whoa Nellie ('91 Miami at '90 Colorado). Miami, hilariously, was hit with 2 unsportsmanlike penalties during the game, among other penalties. This game is realistic. :57:
Anyways, another punt was blocked (2 for 2 in playing this game), this time, the difference, as Colorado was punting in the 4th, up 10-7, Miami blocks it and returns it for a TD, Canes win it 14-10. We had about 9 penalties in this game, and my first Whoa Nellie big play TD, Colorado's only TD, a 25 yard TD run. Colorado also missed two field goals, and led 3-0 at half.

I'm so glad you're playing it and enjoying it!
I doubt any game involving '89 Miami will be a high-scoring affair.
Amazing about the multiple punt blocks - just a 2% chance for each. The beauty of random chance?
1990 Miami might needs its own penalty chart....
-
Wisconsin stomping mode in full gear
-
199 yards to 32.....yeah, I'd say so.

FSU is awful. How long can Willie Taggart keep his job if things don't get markedly better very soon?
-
How many checks does FSU want to write?
-
They've actually been better the last few weeks than the train wreck they were last year and vs Boise State. But yeah, they're not really "FSU" anymore at all.
The beatings Clemson has handed to them these last few years are sexy as hell.
-
Purdue up 40-14 on Maryland now with 11 minutes to play.
#thanksrefs
Wow.
What a dick thing to say.
I was going to say what a great game Purdue had.
Maryland got away with a hold for one of those scores.
I thought the game was called correctly, besides that miss.
F off
-
Some big 12 overtime
-
Wow, I didn't even know USC vs ND was today. Kind of revealing, I guess. USC is one of those programs that shouldn't be able to stink. They're irrelevant.
-
Checking in from the New Brickhouse
Wonderful weather. Windy, snow showers, 35 degrees.
Nebraska is either feast or famine. Either they're getting 20 or Martinez is taking a 10 yard loss on a sack.
Fearless and his crew extend their greetings.
Great crowd here tonight in spite of the weather.
-
Wow, Rutgers had 1 yard passing against Indiana.
-
Nebraska w the 94 at Kst. Playbook without the 94 OL or I back.

Nice to see Trevon Grimes out there

Kind of cool to see Emory Jones, a former OSU commit, get some snaps. Then see Joe Burrow get lots of snaps.
-
Nebraska w the 94 at Kst. Playbook without the 94 OL or I back.
Fleck fired up every time the cameras pan his way. Minnesota looks bigger at all positions compared to Nebraska - OL, WR, etc. I remember a lot of talk from Nebraska last year about the need to develop the Lines from the ground up, something Minnesota looks like they’ve already accomplished.

Indeed. Looked this way most of the season. They are little.
-
Psu v Iowa needs to deliver some entertainment. BIG has been short on fun thus far this year. MOV everywhere has been wide. Not a lot of great games this season. Socar did help us.

A couple of MAC trophy games today.
In the Battle of I-75, Bowling Green beat Toledo 20-7. (No, that's not a typo)
In the Wagon Wheel game, Kent State kept Akron winless 26-3.
Don't look now, but the Golden Flashes currently sit alone atop the MAC East standings as the only team without a Conference loss. (their other MAC win was by a 42 point margin vs Bowling Green)

Can you guess which trophy is modern, and which one is ancient? Lol.
-
I speculate that Mcaff is going to redshirt otherwise I would think he would be starting tonight. My wild speculation is Frost would prefer him over Adrian.
-
tryouts for the 2nd best ACC team start monday
-
Yeah, I see WF is in some serious jeopardy of falling from the unbeaten.
-
It’d be funny if the USC sideline became so enraged with Clay Helton’s ineptness that the headset he talks into was shoved down his throat. I would laugh.
-
Wow. That Iowa catch for the TD was phenominal.
-
Penn st has gotten about zero breaks in this game.
-
LSU dude hit his hip. That's low?
-
I had Iowa in a Yahoo! Pickem contest. I picked Iowa over Michigan too.
I must come to the realization that Iowa is offensively challenged. I keep thinking that the Hawkeyes are better than they are.

Praise be to corn.
-
Florida tried their best...almost tied it up at 35, but a bad pass = a pick in the end zone.
I don't think Florida's defense is as good as we though, but maybe the overall team is better. With the UGA loss, the East is still ours for the taking.

Wow, Rutgers had 1 yard passing against Indiana.
I was against bringing in 2 also rans from the East Coast, but they're a bad DivII team with no relief in sight.Just pay them to go away and penalize Delaney his remaining salary, then sue him for negligence, incompetence and impersonation for a League official or sumsuch
-
You know, Rutgers is that 9th conference game for nine members of the Big Ten. BIG WHOOP.
-
I'd take a split of Auburn/LSU at the beginning of the season. Can't complain. LSU's newfangled offense is legit.
-

Hey, Vandy is trying to give Rutgers some competition for the worst P5 team, having lost 34-10 to...UNLV

I want names of everyone who picked Nebraska to win the B1G West this year. I want all of their names. All of them.

I want names of everyone who picked Nebraska to win the B1G West this year. I want all of their names. All of them.
Get used to it. With Frost, I have a feeling that Nebraska will be the "Michigan" of the B1G West, where they will always be the "best team" up until the season actually starts. They will both be pre-season ranked ahead of Penn St, Wisconsin and Michigan St; the teams that have actually proven on multiple occasions that they are capable of knocking off OSU and winning Big Ten Titles.

Reminds me of Tennessee under Peyton Manning from 95-97.....always getting the preseason love, only to poop the bed each year against Florida.

You have have to give him at least 3 years,at least to get back to even.Tom Osborne was there a long time before he started racking up Natty's.Frost is well connected in FLA,lot of little brothers of kids he coached could be coming Lincolns way.And 2 of the big 3 Football programs in state right now are swirling the drain in a talent rich environment. There are 2 decades of debris to clear up.Hell Minnesota is undefeated

No doubt. My point was that they will continue be the pollster/media darlings of the offseason in the mean time, not that he couldn't eventually get 'em over the hump.
-
The question thus becomes: do Huskers fans have the stomach for a top-to-bottom rebuild? Because that's what Frost has on his hands.
After the struggles against the 1-AA team in the opener and in the non-con, it sure was fun to see this team finally put it all together.
The Gophers have a brutal stretch drive: PSU, at Iowa, at Northwestern, and Wisconsin.
-
Wisconsin is the real deal and should be considered the top of the conference. OSU will give them a good test but its clear so far without injuries Wisconsin will win that game on the 26th

It's clear? lol pfffft

You are much more confident than I am on that one, Ben. If it was in Madison I'd feel a lot better about it.
-
being neutral and actually if you think about it if I leaned any ways it would be against the Badgers but When you watch it you can see it.
it will be a great game, and I may eat crow in a couple of weeks but I think Wisconsin wins 6 or 7 out of ten with a coin flip to where the game is played
Sorry I know this is heavily Buckeye nation on here but at least even if OSU wins they will still win the East and have a 2nd shot at them
-

I guess that's why they play the games to prove to those of us who are less clear.Have no idea who wins that scrum

Wisconsin is the real deal and should be considered the top of the conference. OSU will give them a good test but its clear so far without injuries Wisconsin will win that game on the 26th
/looks at UW’s depth of playmakers and the solid but lower upside QB
Nah. OSU should be considered better.

The question thus becomes: do Huskers fans have the stomach for a top-to-bottom rebuild? Because that's what Frost has on his hands.
reasonable Husker fans do
besides, they've got little choice
It's a seven year contract, I expect him to get all 7 seasons

Checking in from the New Brickhouse
Wonderful weather. Windy, snow showers, 35 degrees.
Nebraska is either feast or famine. Either they're getting 20 or Martinez is taking a 10 yard loss on a sack.
Fearless and his crew extend their greetings.
Great crowd here tonight in spite of the weather.
great stadium
Weather wasn't terrible, wasn't real cold. Was a bit too wet, but decent
Nebraska was famine
Fearless and crew had a great time at the tailgate on the East River Flats. You Gophers are profesionals at setting up for weather!
Unfortunately, since the football game SUCKED, the "bucket tourny" was the highlight of Saturday!
20,000 Red in the stands?

What's clear is OSU and Wisconsin have performed the best on the field through the first half of the season.
What's also clear is both teams need to take care of business next week to make Benthere2's statement bare any weight.
To date OSU and Wisconsin have the top two Running backs in the league.
I think OSU D line is a bit better, I think Wisconsin's O line is amazing. Strength on strength battle there.
OSU QB is a bit more dynamic.
Playing the game in the Shoe will be an advantage for OSU.
I think it will come down to line play; can OSU O line play well enough for the dynamic players to make an impact, Can Wisconsin's O line play well enough to keep the chains moving. And momentum plays, big stops, turnovers, 20+ yard gains.
All that to say, if the 2 best teams in the league can hold serve next week, the game in two weeks should be amazing. But, I don't think we can clearly say Wisconsin will win.
-
It's interesting that both UW and OSU will be playing on Illinois soil this weekend.

Since 2012, the Buckeyes haven't lost more than one conference game, and they have won the conference championship three of the last five years, including the last two. They were ineligible to win the Conference Championship in 2012, lost in the Conference Championship game in 2013, and didn't go to the championship in 2014 and 2016, but, at 8-1 in conference, were tied for the top in the East with Michigan State and Penn State both years, losing on the head-to-head match-up.
The Badgers look good, definitely, but Ohio State has, too, and they have the recent history as the conference's best to back it up. And no team has remotely tested the Buckeyes so far in 2019.
Every week in the power rankings I say Ohio State is #1 until someone proves differently, and that's just as true now as it has ever been.

Another thought on Wisconsin vs. Ohio State, and the true college football elites:
Wisconsin fans (me included): this is awesome!
Ohio State fans: this is October.

I'm in the "this is October" crowd. UW has been beaten enough in CCG's for my liking.
Whatever happens at OSU in a couple of weeks, I would like to see the Badgers stay otherwise unbeaten and get back to Indy.
And regardless of what happens with OSU and they manage to get back to Indy, I'm a huge Penn State fan.
I despise rematch games, and only PSU in the CCG gives UW the chance to avoid one.
-
Yup rematches suck.
-
not if ya win the rematch
-

I'd rather beat Ohio State twice. Seriously.
Of course, that requires beating Ohio State once, first.

Assuming UW and OSU are both otherwise unbeaten by any other teams (HUGE assumption, especially with UW in the better division):
Ya know what happens if UW beats OSU twice? UW goes to the playoff, and OSU goes to the Rose Bowl.
Ya know what happens if UW beats OSU once and loses once? OSU goes to the playoff.
Ya know what happens if UW loses to OSU twice? UW goes to the Cotton to play a G5 school and PSU goes to the Rose Bowl.
And yeah, it's October, dammit.
-
Aren't we glad we have conference championship games?
-
yes, until there's an upset that knocks our best team out of the 4-team playoff
-
Aren't we glad we have conference championship games?
Not at all.
Unless, of course, you're a helmet school and you can lose one, or completely miss one, and still play for a title.
Grr...

Never affected my season. :34:

Kind of interesting, still hearing the chatter about two teams from the SEC in the playoffs, despite having only two undefeated teams left.
Big Ten, with four- yet you never hear that. Watch Ohio State v Wisconsin split two close games, and both finish with one loss. You can bet they would both be eliminated.

B1G-W the better division? Well they definitely have the best worst teams, but I think that the B1G-E has more legitimate contenders (tOSU, PSU, maybe M) vs the B1G-W with just UW and maybe Iowa.
If tOSU and UW both go unbeaten otherwise, split the two-game series this year, and both finish 12-1 I do NOT think it is a given that Ohio State would go to the CFP. I think it would depend on three things in this order of relevance:
- Which team won the second match-up. Big bonus to win the B1GCG.
- Which team looks better in the two games combined. Ie, if tOSU wins by a missed XP in OT in Columbus then loses by four TD's in Indianapolis that would heavily favor UW.
- Which team looks more dominant in their 11 other wins.
-

Yep. But have two 1-loss teams left in the SEC, and there will be a mediots chorus demanding that they both make it in.

That would be a stupid bet. If the world were defined by those few comments one hears that trigger them, sure. But the world is not that way.
If we get to that point, we're probably in a world with three undefeated conference champs (SEC, ACC, Big 12). A 1-loss conference champ from the B1G isn't losing to 1-loss Oregon or ND, so we're basically saying it's 1-loss conference champ OSU or UW vs 11-1 LSU or Bama (no SEC East team can have one loss without winning the conference). If OSU is 12-1 with a loss to UW, I'm dubious anyone jumps the. UW would be an interesting case owing to an atrocious non-conference schedule (OSU at least has Cincy). And even then, I'm kinda dubious.
Granted, there aren't a ton of scenarios when it matters, and most of the time they solve themselves.
-
Yep. But have two 1-loss teams left in the SEC, and there will be a mediots chorus demanding that they both make it in.
In our modern world, it is very easy to find a chorus of voices you don't like.
It's also easy to not obsess over those voices, but that's oft hard to do.
-
While you are correct in that it is a highly unlikely scenario- it would be no more “ stupid” bet than betting the opposite.
Let’s say Bama, Clemson, Oklahoma go undefeated and LSU has only a close loss to Bama. Wisconsin loses a close game in Columbus but beats OSU in a close game in the BTCG.
Are you confident Wisconsin would go over LSU? If yes- than I would say that is a stupid bet. Not that any of this matters.

I think the bigger doomsday scenario is the opposite-- Alabama loses a close one to LSU, the Geaux Tigers go undefeated and win the SEC.
Because I think ESPN has a harder time leaving out Alabama, than it does LSU. I think a 1-loss conference champ Wisconsin has a pretty good chance at going over a 1-loss non-champ LSU.
But a 1-loss non-champ Alabama... well... that's another thing entirely.

In theory LSU's higher SoS would help them but I think you are likely right simply because Alabama has been so phenomenal in the CFP. They lost their first ever CFP game and they haven't lost a semi-final since. In the last four years Bama has gone 4-0 in CFP semi-finals to get to four straight NC games and they have gone 2-2 in those NC's.

Sound advice.

Has the SEC gotten a spot in the playoff ahead of someone that didn't get thumped by a mediocre team? If not, then can we stop the belly-aching?

Who was left out in 2017? Was that the 2017 season or when the playoffs were played 2017?
-
2017 season. My school was left out at 12-1, in favor of Bama, after a close (27-21) loss to OSU in the B1G CCG.
Both were 0-1 against the top-10 that season, after the CCG's, and both were 3-1 against the top 25. Both lost their last games prior to the postseason. They had very similar SOS rankings at that time.
Bama didn't win its division. Wisconsin did.
Of course, Bama got hot and won the MNC anyway, but I think UW should have been in, despite losing in the CCG.
-
yup, Big Jim could have pushed harder
-
Yeah, Wisconsin did not lose to a pastry that year and was left out. People forget that.
-
Don't get me wrong - I was happy to see them pummel Miami in their home stadium. It's always good to beat the brakes off the Canes.
-
It's interesting that last year UGA "almost" (sorta) got in after losing a CG, and with an additional pretty bad loss during the season. I don't think many were claiming Wisconsin should be included that year cited. Some thought OSU should be included of course, which was a rational thought.
-

I actually hate Miami more than I hate OU, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Notre Dame combined.
So, like... a lot.

That Cotton Bowl was a long time ago, my friend.
Am I allow to hate Stan Thomas still, even though I don't follow WWEFL anymore? Heh.

It wasn't just the Cotton Bowl, it was their overall sleazy grossness for all of those years.
But yeah, if you had been a Texas fan at that Cotton Bowl, you'd feel just like me. Single most miserable game experience of my life, and I attended UCLA beating us 66-3 at home, as well as 63-14 and 65-13 losses to the hated Sooners at the Cotton Bowl.
January 1, 1991-- a date which will live in infamy.

Welcome to every poll/ranking system ever!
Imagine if, in 1936, the pollsters put in place a rule that all teams on a bye week had to remain in the same spot. That's what you're advocating for here.

UGA didn’t almost get in, though. Herbie said they should on the broadcast, and some folks got triggered, but they weren’t going to get in at two losses.

Wasn't the 4-team CFP supposed to reduce the controversy by expanding the field? It doesn't seem to have done that. If anything, making selection for the CFP the metric for a successful season, it seems to have increased the intensity of the argumentation.
-
I don't think any intelligent folks think expanding the field will reduce the controversy
it was to make sure a deserving team wasn't left out and had their shot to settle it on the field

This.
...which is the problem.
Identifying the national champion should be exclusive, not inclusive. We all know the best team doesn't always win, so the more you expand the system of crowning a champion, the less often the 'best team' will win it. It's simple logic.

I mean, it kind of has. It’s changed the parameters a little, but it has.
The nature of the sport is that people will bitch and moan endlessly. That’s actually sort of the charm.

The problem is we have a system without hard and fast selection criteria. And as stated above, we like to complain.
There’s also the reality that because it’s less systemized, in a more exclusive arrangement, one year a deserving team gets shut out, and in another, a champion backs in or is given a mulligan.
Don’t you hate the lazy sports writers and coaches? Isn’t letting the teams figure it out via football preferable.

I couldn't find the AP so I used Sagarin rankings.
