One of our resident Gophers posted in his resident genius thread title a week or so ago, a bit about hideous uniforms and making them stop, or some such. We can make an entire thread about Oregon alone, but why stop there?

That's bad but it's not even in the top 25 of horrible alt unis.

No. Just a rando photoshop. I've long been interested in the fraction of CFB fans who combine their fanaticism and tech savvy to either spend hours dreaming up dozens of jerseys or hours message boarding on the merits of those photoshop inventions. That doesn't happen on this board, but I've seen boards where threads like that really take off.

I know some guys on auto forums that do this with the livery of various Formula 1 and other racing teams. It's really cool. They often do a better job than the highly paid design professionals that get the actual gig.

Navy blue and gold are two colors that go so well together that you wonder how anyone can screw it up. But Michigan can, as seen upthread, and so can West Virginia.
-
I always found the Wyoming unis to be rather gruesome. Mustard and Brown, or whatever it is.
-
Not to leave out my own school, here are OU's ugly alternates. Alternate universe, I wish.

They could be worse, but they're pretty bad as it is. This is called the "Rough Rider" uniform, presumably to honor Buffalo Bill rather than Theodore Roosevelt. Surely we wouldn't want to honor a war (shudder!) hero, so it must be Bill Cody, a self-promoting con-man/marketing genius long before Phil Knight was even a gleam in his grandfather's eyes. OTOH, it might be for TR after all, as he signed the Oklahoma Statehood Bill into law in 1907.
You can't tell it from this picture, but the red on the helmet and the shoulder panels has a wood-grain look. They tell us with straight faces that this is to honor the men (and women, of course) of the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. Many of them rode wagons, see? And the wagons were made of wood. It's such an obvious tribute that I missed it completely.
And, yeah, the "sooners" were the ones who sneaked across the start line the night before to scout out the prime real estate.
-
I don't mind when teams go ugly for a week, but hate it when they do it in a big game. OSU-UM should not involve this crap. Wear them when you're playing Akron or Directional Michigan.
-
I'm glad you found that because I could not.
you were actually looking for that???
-
The worst Michigan alternate uniforms were from the 2013 South Carolina game. Fortunately, I think Michigan is done with alternate uniforms....
-
The only "alternate jersey" I want to see Michigan in is the standard home jerseys when going on the road versus OSU. I know that's not perfectly original; USC-UCLA already does it. But it'd be a good look.

Ohio State should do the same, wear our Scarlet Home jersey when we travel Up North, after all it has been a home away from home for the Buckeyes the past few years. :)

A lot folks really liked those gray uniforms/helments. I prefer the traditional in most schools wardrobes, but some have grown on me over the years of being subjected to them while watching.

Texas has never done an alt uniform, thank goodness. I'm sure it'll happen one day, but so far we've managed to avoid it. The only unusual thing we've done in recent memory is adding the "100" logo to the helmet for a game where we honored former player Freddie Steinmark, who played on the 1969 national championship team (whose uniforms all season long featured the 100 which was celebrating the centennial of college football) and who died a year and a half afterward from bone cancer.

I really like true throwbacks. I'm not sure if you consider MSU's white helmets as "alternates," they basically have a flipped version of their normal helmet, but I have really wanted that look for a while, and it didn't disappoint. The one true MSU throwback they wore in 2006 I enjoyed, even though the game was a disaster.

ASU did have an alternate helmet that I absolutely hated, the "flame" helmet. The concept was ok, but the final product was just bad. From the stands or on TV it looked like someone egged a bunch of plain black helmets.

This one isn't that bad. ASU has had worse.
I am wondering when ASU will realize it is a Trident and not a fork. Living in Phoenix, I hear "fear the fork" all the time. :57:

In the early 90s ASU attempted an all-gold uni. Even Darren Woodson and Phillipi Sparks couldn't make those work.

We know, we just don't care. *shrugs*

One of the first depictions historians have found, of Satan carrying a 3-pronged fork, is Muiredach's High Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muiredach's_High_Cross) , a 10th century carving at the Irish monastery of Monasterboice. Shown here, it actually looks quite a bit like a trident and not simply a pitchfork, so I'm ok with ASU using a trident in their logos. Plus, it looks cool.

Yeah I'm not a fan of ANY uniform that has matching solid color jerseys and pants. Texas Tech often goes all-red, and Baylor goes all-green. Looks pretty bad IMO.
-
I just wish they'd do more throwback unis than ultra-space-aged neon crap. I remember the Lions (NFL) with Barry Sanders going with the plain silver helmet, blue jersey, silver pants with no stripe, and blue socks....looked sharp.
I imagine most teams wore tan or beige pants way back in the day. That would be interesting. School-color jersey with tan pants and long, team-colored socks.

In 1994 they did a bunch of throwbacks for the NFL's 75th anniversary. Detroit kept theirs for Thanksgiving Day only, until they introduced the black jerseys. Then those were their Thanksgiving jerseys, until they scrapped those totally. But they didn't go back to the throwbacks.
I think the Packers, Bears, Jets and Eagles had similar throwbacks.
I was hoping we'd see something this year for 100, but so far, no.

If they have to do with your mascot, meh. It has nothing to do with a Gopher. Like Boiler Up is stupid, but at least it sort of makes sense. Bear Down for Arizona is dumb (some player said it before dying in like 1920), but if Baylor did it I could a little get on board.

Same. That's why I've long wanted MSU to do a flipped uniform, and it took until 2017.

I actually liked both of the recent throwback unis for Nebraska; last year's had pants that really looked cream (Yay the Scarlet and Cream) and I just liked the overall look of the throwbacks to the 62 uniforms.

"Pretty" isn't a desired characteristic anymore. But UCLA's power-blue jersey with gold pants and helmet was for a long time the prettiest uniform in college football. Why the Bruins would want to ugly themselves up with an all-black look is beyond me.
Of course, most of the uglification of 21st century America is beyond me.

Yeah, even their standard ones aren't up to par compared to their old shade of powder blue.

Per the Font of All Wisdom and Knowledge on UCLA:
Uniforms (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=UCLA_Bruins_football&action=edit§ion=27)
From 2004-2017, the official UCLA athletic colors were "True Blue (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Blue_(color))" and gold. The "True Blue" is a slightly darker shade than the previous powder blue worn by teams.[111] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-dailybruin_25082003-112)
In the early days of the school, UCLA had the same colors as the California Golden Bears (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Golden_Bears): Yale Blue and California Gold.[112] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-113) Blue symbolized the ocean, while gold represented the state of California (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California), known as the "Golden State".[113] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-blue_red-114)
When football (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football) coach Red Sanders (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Russell_Sanders) came to UCLA for the 1949 season he redesigned the football uniforms. The Yale Blue was changed to a lighter shade of blue. Sanders figured that the baby blue would look better on the field and in film. He would dub the baby blue uniform "Powderkeg blue", powder blue with an explosive kick.[113] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-blue_red-114)[114] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-115) For the 1954 season, Sanders added the now familiar loop on the shoulders, the UCLA Stripe, to give an impression of motion.[115] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-UCLA_football_Media_guide-116) The away uniforms became white, with a navy blue and gold shoulder stripe and gold pants. The helmets became gold.
At times, beginning with the 1954 football season, the font for the numbers on the uniforms has been Clarendon typeface (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarendon_(typeface)). Otherwise it has been block numerals.[115] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-UCLA_football_Media_guide-116) In the 1980s the uniform pants became yellow to look better in color publications, the jerseys a lighter blue, and the UCLA script was added to the helmets. In the 1990s, the uniform pants became gold again.
In 2003, the True Blue colors were adopted.[111] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-dailybruin_25082003-112) The away uniforms got true blue shoulder stripes and numbers in 2006,[116] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-117) but were replaced by navy blue again in 2010.[117] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCLA_Bruins_football#cite_note-118)
In 2009, the Bruins wore a 1967 throwback uniform against Washington and USC, though against USC the team's normal helmet was worn.
I liked the Clarendon-typeface numerals they used to wear. Liked it when the Huskers wore 'em too.

Too young to remember Nebraska's except pictures, but for sure with UCLA. They had such unique colors and font, and they ruined them.

I like Wisconsin's alternate for this year; throw-backs are more my style. I like primary colors, and my all-time favorites are all "classic" looks, (in no particular order) the traditional versions of:
Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama, UCLA, Notre Dame (I like the green and gold, too), Iowa, USC (Trojans), Texas, and LSU.
I like the Badgers' uniforms, but I don't think they are top of the heap. Similar with Michigan State (see below).
I've never particularly liked narrow block letters, so Oklahoma and Nebraska take a minor hit. I don't like wide, or non-symmetrical helmet stripes (Indiana, Michigan State, etc.). Tennessee's orange is just a bad color on an otherwise good uniform. Illinois' and Auburn's blue with orange (and vice versa) doesn't work for me, and I don't think black is good with any color other than yellow/gold (Iowa, Colorado, Army, and Purdue have all had pretty nice black uniforms). I really don't like black as an addition to an already good color scheme.
I like white on white road uniforms (Texas, Wisconsin, Stanford stand out in my memory).
Generally, I don't like helmet stickers, but the buckeyes work for me. I think that's the only one.
