Title: Iowa #20 at Iowa State (Post-Game)
Post by: Hawkinole on September 16, 2019, 12:37:35 AM
Welcome to post-game. I know you cannot each see every play of every game so I just thought most Big Ten fans (even occasionally fans of Ohio State) have an appreciation for epic failure. But it is difficult to imagine, and easy to embrace this one if you are Iowa State's opponent.

Situation: Iowa is punting with about 1:30 left in the 4th Qtr. Iowa State preparing to make its final drive, but first:

Iowa just couldn't get much going. But I have to tell you this game is called foot-ball for a reason. A good punting and kicking game can give the team with the superior kicking game 3-5 points more per game. In Iowa's 1985 Rose Bowl season Rob Houghtlin (kicker and pooch punter), and Reggie Roby All American punter, contributed mightily to the Rose Bowl run, and Iowa has that kind of kicking game this year. As for the Iowa State game here are some key stats.

Total Offense:
Iowa 313; Iowa State 418

Punting:
Iowa 47.2 avg.; Iowa State 39.2 avg.

Field Goals:
Iowa 4-4; Iowa State 1-1

And there were no fumbles or interceptions despite field conditions, although the above video shows a turnover of sorts, but not one that counted as a fumble in the box score.

That was a stunning way to give up (a chance) a game.     The weather came through on GameDay, with the eventual delays, I know I like to take shots at Ames' weather, but it is uncanny.   I think in the 10 visits or so I've had to Ames, I've had one temperate, normal weather day (the OU game I attended in '87).   White out blizzards, high winds, sleet,  sideways rain, fog, you name it.   I also get a kick out of how they never seem to care about stabilizing the broadcast cameras, they bounce and shake all the damn time.

And, Iowa had a big failure on 3rd down before that punt. Iowa passed for 4-yards and the Iowa receiver went out of bounds stopping the clock leaving enough time for Iowa State with two timeouts to drive downfield for a winning field goal.

Matt Campbell has Iowa State playing hard to the final gun.  And he's recruited some talent.  But he's got to clean up around the edges to keep the Clones from shooting themselves in the foot in games where there is a lot on the line.

I give Iowa a lot of credit for a road win in very difficult conditions. ISU sat through the delays in their comfy locker room. The visitor's room is never as nice, and sometimes they are crap (I don't know about the one at ISU, but I'm sure it's not as cozy as the home team gets).

Hawk, I like your comments.  Just a couple of nitpicks

Reggie Roby was long gone by Iowa's 1985 season, graduating in 82.  Although he did play on the 81 Rose Bowl team

Also Brock Purdy had a key fumble for Iowa State  in the 2Q that Iowa recovered.   (Unless you meant Iowa did not have any turnovers)
