Title: And the Corn Shall Rise (SOC 9/14/19)
Post by: MaximumSam on September 14, 2019, 07:10:57 AM
After some unseasonably hot weather, it's cooler in Columbus.  The kids are already playing Minecraft, and a soccer game at 9.  I bought some plantains a week ago, they might finally be getting ready to fry up.  Need to find a good chunk of meat to braise to go along with them.  Probably see if Aldi has a chuck roast.

Noon

Ohio State at Indiana, FOX
Pitt at Penn State, ABC
Maryland at Temple, CBSSN
Eastern Michigan at Illinois, BTN

3:30

UNLV at Northwestern, BTN
Georgia Southern at Minnesota, BTN

4 pm

Arizona State at Michigan State, FOX
Iowa at Iowa State, FS1 tends to be pretty fun lately.

7:30

TCU at Purdue, BTN

8 pm

Northern Illinois at Nebraska, FS1

Deep dish at Uno's Thursday, watched the Cubs win at Wrigley followed by an amazing dinner in Greektown last night. Wonderful vacation so far.

Getting ready for the drive down to West Lafayette in the hopes of seeing Purdue take down TCU.

Going camping with my Cub Scout today/tonight so will miss this weekend's slate of games.

But at the campout we'll be dining on smoked brisket, tater salad, cole slaw, pinto beans, and nanner pudding.  This pack does it right.

Got my twins today. Unfortunately the ex scheduled their swim lessons today to overlap with the start of the ASU@MSU game.

Then a bunch of family is in town to celebrate one of my sister's birthday, so probably some evening Top Golf and dinner at one of those Brazilian steakhouses.

Wife: "Is this game a blackout? Find out before I'm out of the shower please..."

I love this woman. Not only does she know to ask the question, but she brought multiple team gear options just in case. Hell, I brought two Purdue shirts but I'll need to buy something on campus if it's a blackout...

It's pizza. It's too dissimilar to NY pizza that it's not fair to either of them to try to ask which is "better". But it's still pizza.

I'll admit I'm not all that familiar with Detroit pizza, but the looks to me like a variant of pan pizza. Pan pizza is not deep dish pizza.

No way! I'm in Florida too. What parts? The pizza here sucks. Lucali's in Miami Beach is probably the best pizza you can find in the state- Domenic- the owner of the place is the cousin of the original Lucali's NYC owner Mark. Not as good as the NYC spot- but damn close.

Buddy's is flat out amazing. The best pizza in Detroit is Supino's though. And it's not even remotely close in my opinion. I honestly think Supino's is the best pizza I've had anywhere. Maybe even better than the pizzas I've eaten in Naples, Rome, and Sicily. It is better than anything you'll find in New York.

Buddy's is definitely pizza by the way. It's a riff off of Sicilian style square pizza- grandmas pizza as it's known in America- it originated in Detroit from a Sicilian immigrant and his wife named Gus Guerra. They were actual Italians- making a style of pizza from their homeland. They wound up using steel auto pans instead of the flat pans and they wound up using Wisconsin brick cheese instead of Italian style mozzarella. What resulted was an incredible reinvention of an old Sicilian classic.

Chicago style "pizza" is not pizza at all. It's not pizza. It's a disgusting baked casserole that was invented by some American businessman from Chicago who I believe was Jewish and had zero Italian roots. It's not Italian. It's not pizza. And it is disgusting.

That Detroit style pizza it's a variant of Sicilian pizza. And it is pizza. Chicago deep dish "pizza"? That is a creation of a Jewish American businessman named Ike Sewell- who was from Texas- not Chicago or Italy- and his partner was from Mexico- again- which is not in Italy as far as I know- and it's not pizza but more of a weird baked casserole- and it is disgusting.

No offense M, but you must not be looking around enough if you think the pizza in Florida sucks.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of Northeast transplants down here, if not more.  And many of them brought thecooking with them to set up shop.

I'm in the Daytona Beach area, which isn't exactly known as a cuisine hotspot, but even here I have access to legit pizza from NY, NJ, and PA, amongst others.  Of course you will find imposters, but there are plenty of authentic options.

The worst pizza, by far, is something we got in Scranton, Pennsylvania while visiting places from The Office.  It was covered in American cheese, and was terrible.

Well I am like 97.8% Italian according to 23andme DNA testing. I'm almost a purebred dago but not quite all the way there. My entire family on both parents sides are from Italy. My grandfather is from Sicily. I've grown up around the real stuff. I've been to Italy/Sicily several times. I have very high standards when it comes to all Italian food. I think most pizza places suck. Even the ones in NY/NJ/PA. Most of the pizza places in Manhattan kind of suck. You have to go to Brooklyn to get the real deal.

Lucali in Miami Beach is excellent, but it's still not quite the same as the one in Brooklyn. It's the water and the air down in Florida. The water sucks and the air is humid af and it's packed with salt and water. Changes the flavor and the character of the dough a little bit and throws it off.

Checking in from the East River Flats. Great morning for a tailgate.

Chicago-style pizza depends on who you're getting it from. Giordano's is baked casserole. Lou Malnati's is FANTASTIC. The crust is a lot more rigid than the others.

Someone who intends to take a lot of my money opened a Jet's Pizza three miles from my house. They have the Detroit-style square deep dish. It is delicious. It reheats really well, too.

The East River Flats are as pretty off a place as their is to tailgate anywhere in the Big Ten.

PSU says they can do stupid do, as their QB slides instead of trying to pick up the first down, and then they tried to kill Pitt's punt returner.

would love to see Michigan's big WR's against these Penn State DB's. Unfortunately, I highly doubt Shea Patterson will be able to make throws like that to give his guys a chance. Shea has been god awful the last 6 games really. Hasn't just been the first two of this season. He ended the last 4 games of last year on a bad note and he's gotten worse since then.

That has to be the worst goal line attempt ever.  Can't get it in in 3 tries, and then decide to kick the FG, and wind up missing it, so PSU can bring it out to the 20 now.  At least if they had gone for it and gotten stuffed, Penn State would be playing from their own end zone.

I haven’t seen stanford’s bulky lines fold like this since before Harbaugh was coach. The DL especially looks wilted in that Orlando humidity. UCF has rolled over 300 yds of offense only halfway through 2nd Q. 31-7 Central Florida leads the Cardinal.

So, this was a new one on me today.  WVU scored a TD with about 3 minutes left in the game to make the score 44-27.  On the XP the holder took the snap standing up and just kneeled.  Everyone was just kinda like WTF?

Neal Brown said after the game it ensured the game would remain a 3 possession game with little time left.  Said if NCSU blocks and returns it it’s 44-29 and now a 2 possession game.  I mean, he’s right in everything he said.  Is that overthinking it or is that playing chess while everyone else plays checkers?

How in the world do the Spartans look this Dead?!?! Credit to ASU for getting way ahead on the game plan. Daniels is impressively weathering a Michigan St front seven that should be controlling the game. The pundits all seemed to agree that if ASU somehow wins this game it’ll have to be a low scoring, 10-7 type win and so far ASU has been able to sandbag the game play the way they need. And it sure looks like there’s an awful lot of ASU yellow in the stands there in East Lansing.

They haven't looked that bad, they just have no big play weapons.  They've outgained ASU substantially, ASU has 106 yards, but 3 plays account for most of those.  MSU is consistently picking up 2 or 3 first downs every drive, but taking three plays to do it.  You are relying on being perfect on third down conversions.  Also getting 0-2 on FGs (one a chip shot) from the most accurate kicker in school history was unexpected.

And let's add a failed 4th and 1 to the mix.  237-108 in yards, 14-7 in first downs.  Down 3-0.

And also they missed a hold and hands to the face, that resulted in instead hands to the head of the QB, due to the fact that the ASU OL was holding Williams, and smacked him in the face.

At this point, and especially given the situation (#18, at home, Vs so-so PAC 12 team, revenge on mind, NFL players on front seven), Yes, Michigan State DOES look that bad. ASU’s DL is beating the Spartans more experienced OL right now, and a senior QB isn’t able to develop any rhythm. Big play guys would help but why can’t the running game get anywhere? ASU is beating MSU at the field of possession game.

How does MSUs defensive front seven impact our offense?  ASU has done absolutely nothing on offense.  And it's an experienced, but bad OL, when healthy.  They've lost two more starters today, putting them at 3/5 of their starting OL being out.  Even if MSU was healthy on the line, I'd give ASUs DL the edge there, and they are far from healthy.

But now I at least understand the terms of the debate.  Just as in your example of beans being put in chili making something other than chili.
We don't have ethnic Italian neighborhoods that I know of in any Oklahoma cities.  There's a small city named Krebs in the SE part of the state where a lot of Italian miners immigrated over 100 years ago.  Some say that Pete's Place there is the best Italian restaurant in the state.  I keep meaning to eat there sometime.
The Aloisio family has Mondo's Ristorante Italiano in Tulsa.  It's been voted best Italian restaurant in NE Oklahoma a few times.  In the suburb where I teach, there is a restaurant named Savastano's, owned and operated by the family of the same name.  I've eaten there quite a few times.
But I've not heard previously the argument that deep dish pizza is not really pizza.  Now I have.

My thoughts on ethnic food are that adapting it to American tastes is legitimate, just as American hamburgers get adjusted to local tastes in other countries.  As long as it still has a ground beef patty between two halves of a bun, it's still a hamburger.

Because you wasted all of your timeouts trying to force them into their third choice look on 4th and 13, but let them concert anyway, then waited 20 seconds to decide whether to run one more play or kick the FG, so it turned into a scramble situation, due to having no timeouts.  Horrible, horrible coaching all afternoon

I agree. The defensive game planning for ASU was top notch. They out schemed a SR QB with plenty of experience and put on a better show than the MSU front seven which has about 5 future NFL draft picks. All in all a shameful game for the Spartans.

Spartan fans can cry about blown calls all they want but the bigger point is that MSU, with ALL their advantages, should NOT have been in iffy position to begin with!

No, I said all game that the major gaps were going to cost them. It shouldn't have even been close, at one point the 4th quarter Michigan state had triple the yardage.  the Arizona State offense did absolutely nothing until the final drive. but you leave that many points on the board and it's going to bite you in the end, finished off by too many men on the field due to burning all your timeouts for no reason

We're staying a block from Trump tower here. Yesterday was Mexican Independence Day. As we were walking back from dinner (right past the tower), there were cars flying the Mexican flag back and forth in front of Trump tower blowing their horns. One car even saw us walking and yelled "F@&k Trump". Not sure it was directed at us. Not sure it wasn't.

We made haste to the hotel... Because even though we're not Trump supporters, we look the part!

Yup.  I was in France for the 4th of July one year, got together with a bunch of Americans and celebrated it.  Of course ten days later was Bastille Day, definitely a much bigger party.

Down here in Texico, El Diez y Seis is widely celebrated. Moreso than El Cinco de Mayo which is actually nothing more than a celebration of a battle victory over the French, of all people.  Not sure why elsewhere, Cinco de Mayo became such a big deal.  I call it Mexican St. Patrick's Day.

His approval rating amongst Hispanics has not been higher during his term than now  and were not talking about 0 to 1 or anything like that.  Anyways, carry on.

@847badgerfan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=5) BTW we highly enjoyed the Weber Grill restaurant. I know you're a fan, right?

They're both excuses to get drunk, er, party.

It is celebrated by Americans abroad.
I'm sure it is. I'm sure they all get in their cars and hoot and holler and yell "F ________ (insert country leader)" and protest too.

When I was in France over that 4th of July, Jaques Chirac was the president.  There was no need for me to yell "F Chirac" because most of the French folks I knew were already doing it. :)

The celebration continued last night as well. We were walking from north Michigan Avenue back to the hotel, and again didn't see any cars honking and flying the flag except within a block of Trump tower.

Typically, when #7 plays at #3, what would you guess the spread would be?
