Title: Purdue (1-1) vs. TCU (1-0) Game Week
Post by: betarhoalphadelta on September 09, 2019, 01:37:41 PM
Not a good way to start the week:

Line opened at Purdue -2 though, so Vegas thinks we have a shot in this one.

As stated, I'll be in beautiful Ross-Ade Stadium for this one. 50 yard line, 18 rows up. Hopefully Purdue can win this one for me!

I'm not sure much is expected from TCU this year, but their defense is well-coached and usually pretty good.  It keeps them in a lot of games.  Should be an interesting matchup.

TCU's D should be once again pretty good, while the offense still has a lot of questions that weren't answered in their week 1 cupcake victory.

What is the backup QB like?
Jack Plummer, from Arizona. No relation to Jake.

Purdue has recruited very well at QB for a few years now, and Plummer was hand-picked by Brohm. He's a redshirt frosh, so he's been in the system a little while. He played well in the spring game, and ran with the 1's during most of spring while Sindelar was limited by injury.

That said, he's a redshirt freshman, so we know very little about how he'll perform under the lights at Ross-Ade vs a stout defensive team like TCU. So I think we're all hoping Sindelar can play.

So that early line didn't hold. Now it's about -2.5 in favor of TCU.

The Vanderbilt game was on BTN last night when I went to the gym. Rondale Moore looked more impressive than I remember from 2018, and I was never down on the guy. Being a jitterbug is one thing. But being that as well as strong, instinctive, and playing with that low of a center of gravity is something altogether else.

Being reported that Markus Bailey is out for the year with a knee injury.  If that is true, that is a huge loss to the defense.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest you just weren't paying close attention in 2018, then... All that was on display all year.

Until last night, I was maybe only seeing Rondale Moore by postgame highlights.

1st round pick.
I might have guessed that from last year's hiighlights. But seeing him on non-highlight downs wowed me even more

Yeah the problem was that Purdue struggled to diversify.  Against MSU I think he had like 10 catches, but for only like 60 yards, and nobody else did anything.  They just locked him down, and dared someone else to beat them.  It wasn't that nobody could, it was like seemingly Purdue didn't even try.  It's hyperbole but it feels like he had 20+ touches/targets that game.

I think the closest comparison I can think of is a bigger(?) Darren Sproles.  Weapon running, receiving, special teams, with good speed, but deceptive strength too.

He doesn't get to do it a lot, but watch him run block.

Big loss here.  This really hurts.  Purdue does not have the depth for these injuries.  Him and Neal are (were) the best returning players on the defense.

TCU Horned Frogs (1-0) at Purdue Boilermakers (1-1)
7:30 - West Lafayette, IN - BTN
This line has been jumping back and forth all week, but no matter where it lands, all the media types talk like TCU is a guaranteed winner.  I'm not seeing it.  That Nevada loss looks somehow worse than it did at the time.  But I also think the Vanderbilt win is being written off too casually.  Vanderbilt is by no means a good team, but they have some really good offensive weapons.  Obviously the Purdue injuries are a factor, with Markus Bailey, their best defender, being done for the year.  Starting quarterback Elijah Sindelar remains a game time decision.  I'll go with the assumption that he's going to play.  The case for Purdue remains the same, too many mental mistakes, and they don't play up to their ability when they make them.  It cost them at Nevada, as it did in multiple games last week, but they cleaned a lot up last week against Vandy.  For their part, it's tough to get a read on TCU, they opened against Pine Bluff, where they fumbled the ball seven times (recovering 5); and scored touchdowns on only 2 of 9 red zone trips into the red zone.  It's a case of strength on strength with Purdue wanting/needing to pass the ball, but the Horned Frogs' secondary being the best part of their defense.  The Golden Lions used two quarterbacks, completed less than half of their passes, on 4.1 ypa.  Purdue knew their run game would suffer, but they've been the worst run offense in the Big Ten, at just 2.7 ypc, while running the ball less than any team.  Purdue might not mind being one dimensional, but TCU is a tough team to do that against.  TCU's passing game was supposed to take a big step forward with the addition of Kansas State transfer Alex Delton, but he was horrible in the opener.  True freshman Max Duggan, the crown jewel of their 2019, who chose them over Notre Dame, came in and played really well, giving us a good old fashioned quarterback controversy.  Patterson can't afford to wait, because the he cannot afford to waste what talent he has at wideout.  Jalen Reagor was the sure thing, as good as any receiver in the Big XII, but the question of who was going to compliment him was answered resoundingly by senior TreVontae Hights, who had an 8 catch, 108 yard breakout, after TOTALLING 6 receptions in his first three years combined.  If Sindelar is a no go, this pick changes, because the Boilermakers have no run game, and TCU's secondary is too good to run Brohm's offense in your debut against, but between two teams that had very sloppy Week 1s, I've only seen Purdue put together a strong performance, and I feel better about them playing a clean game at home than I do about TCU travelling to play under the lights.
PURDUE 28, TCU 27

No Sindelar and an offensive line that couldn't run block meant, predictably, that Purdue's offense was impotent. The defense spent the entire first half on the field.

TCU would have been up bigger, earlier, but kept trying to throw the ball. But that Purdue could stop them through the air, but TCU either the errant passes or dropped wide open balls.

I don't see a way to six wins.
