Title: October 21 Stream of Consciousness
Post by: 847badgerfan on October 21, 2017, 02:55:08 AM
Gonna hit the market in Barcelona this morning to get some provisions, and then get packed up to board the Azamara Quest for a journey across the Mediterranean to Civitavecchia. Should be a great day but I'm worried about finding football. Got my stream working with the help of my VPN so hopefully that will continue and I can catch a few of them.

What'cha all up to today?

I'm probably missing everything.  We are going to some get together out in the middle of nowhere.  Not sure I'll even have a cell signal.  Good timing with the Bucks being off, though I'd like to catch the UM/PSU and ND/USC games tonight.

The cruise ship took my bottle of Woodford Reserve out of my luggage.  I didn't know they didn't allow open bottles of booze.  The Internet on the ship was spotty at best.

The Dawgs are on a bye week before the Florida game and not much is happening in the SEC other than UK at Clanga and the Third Weekend in October (which one would surmise will be ugly).

The weather here is great but turning cooler and we're off to LV and California Monday for a week.  Taking the wife to four national parks in a convertible rental.  I hope Tioga Pass stays open.

bye weeks are great for end of the season golf

hitting Miles Inn for schooners and charlie boys while watching the Hawks and Cats, then to the golf course about 2pm when the rain subsides

wet, windy, 60 degree golf is better than no golf a tall.

Oddly enough I am floating out on the general Mediterranean too, near mouth of the Adriatic between the coasts of Italy and Greece. I'll be running my ESPN Player app off ship's WIFI to catch what I can.

It's currently raining sideways here in the Twin Cities. Not looking good for an 0830 arrival on the Flats. Loading in the rain isn't appealing.

At least it should stop by about 10.

Back in Michigan for the weekend to visit my elderly and not so healthy folks. Nice to see dirt and pine versus sand and palm for a change. It is a beautiful day here.

Should be done in time to watch Michigan versus Penn State, which I've been looking forward to all year      Irresistible force versus immovable object!

The piece they just ran on college game day about "we are Penn State " was awesome.

The next door neighbors are having a "garage sale" and the wife is toting stuff over there to sell.  I put out some ancient vinyl albums I had in a box as the fellow said they could sell for $5 each.  Huh.

I still have my old turn table, have not fired it up in probably 35 years.  I was an early adopter of CDs back in the day, had the very first Sony on the market.  I wonder if it is worth anything special these days.

It is Bridge Day in our little hometown of Fayetteville, WV. That's when base jumpers from all over the world come here to jump off our bridge that sets 876 feet above the gorge.  Beautiful day for it, too. But I don't think I'm heading out that way.

My wife's family came in with their adopted son and I think I'll let them go to the bridge and I'll take the boys to a playground and then lunch at Chick-Fil-A.  Then come back home later this afternoon and settle in for some football.  WVU's 8pm kickoff unfortunately coincides with the two most interesting games on the slate today.

Nothing too fancy on the menu.  My wife is going to make buffalo chicken dip and I'll probably pick up some shredded pork BBQ from a local deli here for sandwiches.

Change of plans for me, as I stayed home with the dogs while the fam went away.  Great job by Texas - got a huge play where it looked like their guy might have stepped out of bounds.  But before it got reviewed they got their whole team down and ran a play before anyone could blow a whistle.  Exceptional coaching.

Bye Week for Wisconsin.

I really like Taylor though. Great patience and burst, much like Ty, but we're so one-dimensional he likely won't have another 100 yard game.

Did the players think that ball was tipped?

The Maryland WR blatantly shoved the defender, then another defender comes in and decks the Maryland WR?

They missed the offensive PI, caught the dirty late hit.

And another drop.  This time in the red zone.  This is getting hard to watch.

The coaching is there.  The talent at OL, QB, and WR is not.  Anthrop is the only reliable WR.  He's a player, but Purdue was also his only D1 offer

Purdue has run for 212 and thrown for 107 so far today.

So why not throw three straight downs for zero yards and then punt when you get the ball?

I feel for you, in what seems like a frustrating game, but personally it's refreshing to have angry (or happy) Purdue fans.  Had plenty of them in the early days of this board, and I'm glad to see how quickly Brohm has wiped away the apathy.

True. We stuck around for basketball threads, but yeah, it's been pretty dark for Purdue fans for a while.
But still, it's Rutgers. They never played, but Hazell should have been able to compete with Rutgers!

On the bright side, I just realized Purdue landed a commit from 4* DE George Karlaftis.  Holy crap, this might be the biggest recruiting get I've seen since I started following the program.  He had offers from Alabama, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State.

FSU fighting back and with full momentum now against Louisville thanks, in part, to some helpful officiating. Anyone else disagree with that roughing the passer call against Louisville on 4th & 10? Which in turn kept alive the drive and placed FSU at 1st & goal on the 8? FSU driving inside Louisville 20, down 21-28.

Lamar Jackson and Noles true freshman James Blackman put on a flashy QB duel, but the rest of both rosters and coaching staffs deserved to lose this game. And FSU shouldn't be such a paltry 2-4, but they deserve it. Announcers talked constantly about how many potential 1st & 2nd round draft picks play on the Noles defense but as a unit they cough out such a half-hearted effort.

Texas loses another heartbreaker. Had a 3rd and 4 from the 9 and needed only a FG to send it to second OT. Ehlinger was flushed from the pocket and I guess was trying to throw it OB.  Instead he throws a floater directly to an Ok St defender standing by himself in the end zone.

Related thought, considering we have no go to guy, but a bunch of guys who aren't decoys.  Why don't we use them more as decoys to wear down CBs.  Like call a route for whichever WR isn't matched up with CB #1, and whichever one is, just goes deep?

Weirdness.  Sooners go to wildcat formation on a third and fourth down and don't make it.  Then get a pick.  Kyler Murray comes in for Baker Mayfield.  They get to the goal line and go wildcat again and don't make it.  21-10 K State, and not sure what the deal is with Mayfield.  He doesn't appear hurt.

Moorhead is completely out-scheming Don Brown. Barkley dropped that but he was WIDE OPEN. 6'4, 240 pound 4.8 running Mike McCray in man coverage on Barkley? Yeah...um Barkley wins that one on one matchup every time.

Finally changed it up and put LaVert Hill on Hamilton...didn't get that one. Much better match up when you put your best cover guy on their best WR vs putting your safety.

Don Brown is getting completely out-schemed, just putting players in bad match-ups in man to man coverage.

Harbaugh is just going to shut it down here. He should at least try and get a FG with that kicker of his. He can hit a 50+ yarder.

This is typically where Don Brown makes his living- half time adjustments. I'd HOPE to god that he'll stop putting Mike McCray in man to man on Barkley or safeties Mettelus/Kinnel in man to man on Hamilton. Or 5'11" Khaleke Hudson on 6'6" Mike Geisicki in man to man. Play more zone. One of the few times they mixed zone in they confused McSorley and got a pick.
Title: Re: October 21 Stream of Consciousness
Post by: Mdot21 on October 21, 2017, 09:29:11 PM
If they are going to insist on playing man to man they need to change things up.

They need to play a 3rd CB when Hamilton is in the slot- maybe Ambry Thomas or Brandon Watson - and keep Hill on Hamilton letting him follow him wherever he is.

They need to keep the 6'4, 240 pound McCray or 6'5, 250 pound Noah Furbush on the 6'6 Geisicki and let them get physical with him. Can't keep putting a 5'11 Khaleke Hudson on him- Hudson can't get physical with him AND he's giving up 7 inches to him.

And while I hate the idea of ever putting a LB or S in man to man with Barkley- if they insist on doing so they need to stop with Mike McCray and man him up with one of the safeties Metellus or Kinnel or one of the faster LB's like Bush or Khaleke Hudson.

This is just obvious stuff. I don't know why Brown hasn't adjusted sooner.

Title: Re: October 21 Stream of Consciousness

UW scored on a pick six right away.   Taylor fumbled at the end of the 1st quarter inside the UW 10.  I think Maryland turned that into the first half FG.   Fumag. had a nice day, 8 catches.   Horni was ok.   M'land did move the ball fairly well in the 3rd quarter.     UW probably didn't need that FG at the end, but they were at a 4th and 1 with under a minute.  It did take the game 'over' and UW did cover.  :)

Yeah, one has to ponder the mental aspect of this, much like Kentucky-v-Florida (but not Miss State).  You can put together a competitive team athletically and still not have the mental confidence to win late, it often seems, or against certain opponents.  They go in expecting bad things to happen somehow.
And they do.  Texas is another team that has been "close late" and lost, as if they don't have the swagger they need.
Miami is a team that probably is not that good but has fallen into a series of late close WINS.  That could be happenstance of course, but by now I think they expect to win a late close match.

Couldn't it just be they're playing more talented/better teams? Plus close games remain very hard to control, mental thing or not.

What's going on with Tate is REALLY similar to what happened with Pat White his freshman year at WVU.  Not the starter, getting spot duty, but once he got in there full time they were a different team.

Yeah, I'm just going to have to disagree with that. They never once made adjustments. Don Brown put his players in position to fail. Not succeed. That's not what a great DC like he has been for basically his entire career is suppose to do.

He continually put his safeties in man coverage on Penn State's best WR in Hamilton. McSorley was smart enough to exploit this. Hamilton absolutely abused Mettelus and Kinnel for big gain after big gain. I believe LaVert Hill- Michigan's best cover CB- was on Hamilton only 3 times in man coverage. Hamilton caught only 1 of those passes- a slant for 6-7 yards in which Hill was on his back and tackled him right after he caught it. Hey Don, maybe you should've had your best CB shadow their best WR if you're gonna play man to man 99% of the snaps. Just a thought.

And Brown kept putting 6'4, 240 pound Mike McCray in man coverage on Barkley. Complete lunacy. And he kept putting 5'11" Khaeke Hudson on 6'6" Mike Gelisicki.
Brown just made it too easy on McSorley throwing the ball. Played man basically every damn snap and McSorley found the man to man match-ups that favored his guys and exploited them damn near every time. Give lotta props to McSorley, have to knock Don Brown though. He should've mixed in more zone coverage to confuse McSorley a little bit more and he should've made adjustments to put his best cover guy on their best WR all game long and he should've switched up who would cover Geisicki in man and who would cover Barkley.

Brown is a very good coordinator. Sometimes the opposing team just has more talent on the field. Secondly, you can’t solely blame a DC for matchups that are exploited. Sometimes is just a great play or scheme from the offense that forced a bad matchup and took advantage of it.

Penn State played a heck of a football game and executed incredibly well. I thought Michigan’s defense would be the only thing that kept them in the game, when in reality it was the defense that failed them. They struggled to get any pressure, which left a very inexperienced secondary open to a feasting by good offensive talent.

Brown is an excellent DC.
I can blame him a little bit when the 2nd half rolls around and you haven't made any adjustments.
They played too much man to man that put Mettelus and Kinnel in bad spots. Neither one of them can cover Hamilton one on one. That's advantage Penn State every time. Michigan didn't get enough chances to get pressure. McSorley knew where to go pre-snap just about every time and get rid of the ball quickly. How many times on those long throws did he get rid of the ball right before he got hit? Seemed like every time. I give McSorley a lot of credit. He played a whale of a game. Took big hits and kept slinging it and running it all over the field.

So ASU has now allowed just 17 points the past two games.  Where did this come from?   Then Rich Rod turns the keys over to K. Tate and the kid (still 18) has been so much fun to watch.   I'm sure many of us thought Graham and RR were toast a month ago.
Bye week adjustments finally got the defense to play to their potential.

Yeah looks like Rich finally found his Denard 2.0 out there. Bigger stronger kid than Denard with a better arm. Denard was so fun to watch operate, but he was a little slight and that arm was pretty weakish.

Look at the scores of the games that Tate has started though. 45-42, 47-30, 45-44. Love Rich's offense to death. Problem still the same with him though. Guy can barely ever field a defense.

Rich as an OC would be maybe the best in the business. Not sure he's cut out for being a head coach where there are other sides that need attention like oh um...DEFENSE.

Having said all this...I do think Penn State is the team best equipped from the B1G to take on BAMA.

You're not going to beat Alabama without that style of wide-open offense and mobile QB that Penn State plays with. You're just not. Sorry. You're not playing a pro-style offense and beating them. They will absolutely hammer you into submission to any pro-style team. They are designed to completely destroy those types of offenses.

Penn State's offense has the perfect ingredients to take on Alabama. A supremely talented RB that can be used in so many different ways to create mismatches. Barkley is a top 5 pick in the 2018 draft. Period. BAMA's LB's are great- but Barkley on ANY LB'er not named Jaylon Smith (before the freak leg injury of course) is a complete and utter mismatch. A mobile QB that can make plays with his feet- McSorley reminds me of Manziel Lite. Not saying he's as good as Manziel but he's a similar type of QB. Penn State also has a solid OL and a great WR/TE crew. Hamilton and Geisicki- those are both NFL draft picks at WR and TE. I don't know where they'll get drafted- but both of them certainly will.

Couldn't it just be they're playing more talented/better teams? Plus close games remain very hard to control, mental thing or not.
I agree, but they hang in there against those teams up until the end many times.  They hung in with OSU for a half.
They seem able to hang, but not close.  You should win a third of those close games by random chance.

Maybe, but probably not. Three games is a minuscule sample size, not to mention, one of the three was a blowout with one half of improbably competitiveness. Iowa and NW show us year in and year out that close losses can go in waves. Maybe that's mental fortitude, or maybe it's just that close games get weird.
(From S&P+, Indiana is 44, with UM 27, MSU 20 and OSU No. 1. IU probably outperformed its indicators vs. Michigan, got crushed vs. OSU and seemed pretty even against MSU, though I don't have those numbers yet)

This is always such a strange outlook. What you're saying is, he's not cut out to be a national championship head coach. And he's fortunately in the sport where winning a national championship is limited to the smallest number of teams.

Dude is in a sport where the failure rate of coaches is pretty high. He's a coach who's won 59.5 percent of his games, with 12 winning campaigns in 16 seasons. He's Don Nelson, which is to say a pretty good coach, but one who builds lopsided, high-variance teams.

Penn State's OL has not looked so good in the previous few games.  My guess is the the Michigan defense looked to put pressure on McSorley.  He has struggled when under a lot of pressure.  I don't know what adjustments Penn State made on the O-line, but it seems to have worked.
