Title: The UT Footbal Program In a Nut Shell
Post by: gymvol on September 02, 2019, 09:04:39 AM

It's where mediocre coaches can get hired to sit on their ass getting fat while being paid millions for doing a piss poor job.

About like working at the post office.

Is this about coaching laziness?  Don't forget, Pruitt wasn't their first choice, wasn't their 10th choice.......

Both lines are weak.  Not weak like a good meal high in protein and a few weeks in the gym can alter, but 2nd string at a mediocre high school program weak.

I want to blame JG... But he never really had a chance.  Still, I dont think he possesses any leadership of that squad, or there are issues with attitudes and a lot of just 'going through the motions'.  It reminds me of the youngest Clausen who the team rallied behind and when he was not the most talented QB, but the team obviously supported more than the 'starter'.

I saw zero spark.  None.  There was a sense of "FU" on every snap and the sidelines. Even Pruitt was just pretty much standing there in a sense I wouldnt describe as disbelief, but more as "whatever"...

Its time for UT to do the most drastic thing imaginable... And I'm only partially goofing here... Swap teams, coaches staffs EVERYTHING except uniforms with ETSU.  Get a bunch of kids there who WANT to be there.  Get coaches with hunger.  Even the bright spots on the current roster and staff have been spoiled by whatever treacherous ailment alive on that hill at this point, and are lost.  Call up Sanders in Johnson City and tell him to get his team and staff on a bus.  The same busses can bring UT back to JC, or those prima donnas can bail out at highway speeds if they wish.  There may be a few teams along I81 that may have them.... If theyre lucky and find some without tv's.

@OrangeAfroMan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=58) ... This is something different.  To sound like the lead character in a made for tv medical drama: "we've not seen this before" (dumdumDUUUM)
(Narrator) In a world exist a tiny enclave of student athletes and their handlers, and a strange but powerful force has overcome them which prevents them from seeing reality like you and me.  They dont understand the lack of effort impacts their production and cant grasp why opponents dont fall at their feet requesting mercy, something.. Something "new" is happening there, and its the hero's job to isolate it and prevent its spreading to the rest of the world... Can he do it?".... (Cut to antihero character named Fuller) "TRADITION, Y'ALL!!! and... DONUTS!!!" (As Cheney reaches in from jist outside frame to snatch a donit from fulmers collection, implying, perhaps, the blame for the entire circumstance is.... DONUTS?

Tune in next week to see if the demon can be extorted by the BYU team when they visit, or.... If they partake of the donuts and carry the sickness west in their victorious return to Provo.

If they lose to BYU, I think the season is over for them effectively.  They'd be looking at losses, again, to Vandy and USCe and UK and probably even Bama.

I watched BYU and Utah... BYU plays hungry... they'll win this one easily if they bring that with them and if both teams play consistent with what they just demonstrated.

I would - and did - fault Butch Jones more than Pruitt.  My take is the culture was poisonous for any coach to try and remedy.

Jones is a popular target... but Jones was simply a 'post turtle'.  he tried, really hard, and within the boundaries the school allowed, which was narrow.

the Pirate said it best... that mess had (has?) all the makings for a movie.  intrigue, bad actors, greed, sacrificing something they inherited through power plays and politics for monetary gain... it goes on along those lines.  The situation there was stupid.

UT couldn't find a coach because of the environment they'd created.  nobody in their right mind would go there and try to resurrect a program under the conditions and limitations the 'bad players' fostered.  Nobody with an up and coming career would waste it by going to UT.  ..... the Pirate would have, because he's one of those who do more with less and thumbs his nose at authority.  But even the Pirate would have misfired under that structure.

part of that structure is gone- or neutralized, anyway...

but that was 'then'... this is 'now'... and Saturday was inexplicable.  On talent alone UT outweighs Georgia State by a hefty margin.  The play selection was decent Saturday... the scheme put the players in position... they didn't execute.  the line may as well stood back and let the GS DL walk straight through.  There is something else going on there.  there was an absolute lack of motivation, and an abundance of apathy.  they just didn't care.  Pruitt seemed unaffected by any exterior stimuli... Cheney just looked hungry... I don't even know where the DC was... the team was less than animated... it was absolutely flat- and an air of entitlement as if they literally expected GS to fall at their feet and beg for mercy- but didn't care one way or another....

if Pruitt is pushing 'just go to work', he needs to stop it... they need to go way beyond 'going to work' and 'realize they're going to have to play at the top of their game just to have a single win this season'.... seriously.

I was thinking had they played a sloppy uninspired game and won say 30-21, we'd probably chalk it off to the first game "jitters" etc. while voicing a bit of concern about the level of play, but would figure it would get sorted out as opponents get better.  Florida had a sloppy game, albeit against a P5 opponent of some note, and no one is panicking.  UGA was sloppy is parts of the game, penalties etc.  Bama started out slowly.

The obvious problem is that GS won going away.  They didn't block a FG to win.  The lined up and beat the Vols.  This was a Sub Belt team that was 2-10 last season.

I suspect things are wrong we can't yet see.  Is there a betting line out on BYU?  I bet it went from about 17 to about 5.

Looks like the line was about 7 and moved to as low as one before settling at 3.5, favoring the Vols.

If I'm BYU's coach, I'm throwing out my pregame speech and replacing it with, "HOW IN THE F*$*# HELL ARE WE 3.5 POINT UNDERDOGS TO TENNESSEE?!?!?!?!?!"

Nothing more need be said.

I'm surprised the line was only 7 and moved to 3.5.  BYU has a decent team.  It's not as if the crowd is going to be motivated.

My thinking was and still is for Tennessee to get a top quality football coach who is a proven winner they will have to go with a FCS coach who is willing to move up.

They should have hired Mike Houston who is now at ECU.

He's Proven winner with championships every where he has been and keeps moving up.  Some other big time program will recognize this eventually and we will have missed out again.

Yeah....but he's no Jon Gruden!!!

Yeah....but he's no Jon Gruden!!!
He wants a "top quality proven winner".  So do we all of course.

I'd keep an eye on the Louisville coach, but I suspect he may end up at UNC down the road when Mack retires.

I'm an unabashed and unapologetic lifelong Vol fan so perhaps I'm looking at this with orange tinted glasses.
It's easy for fair weather fans and fringe observers to take swipes at a team after an embarrassing loss like last week  but I still feel there is a good possibility we come out with an " us against the world" attitude against BYU. If they don't then I agree...the season is lost along with any hope of having a decent recruiting year.
For those hoping we lose just as an excuse for getting rid of the coach or the AD you're  killing   any hopes of coming out of this football purgatory for another 10 years.
Maybe I'm being unrealistic but that's what real fans do....their expectations are unrealistic

Still awful early but CJP looked like a man already checked out. Win, lost, or whatever--if the Vol players and coaches aren't breathing fire (even chippy) this Saturday, I'd think K-ville might have an historically tough season.

Tend to favor cincy's opinion on this... things are just too weird in Knoxville lately
