Title: Summer has ended, long live summer (8/31/19 SOC)
Post by: MaximumSam on August 31, 2019, 08:26:38 AM
At long last, and after half the the B1G has already kicked, we actually have the first real Saturday of college football.  My wife is getting antsy for us to go hit the gym, so I must be brief.

Noon
FAU at OSU - Fox.  Obviously I will be watching this game to see how the new coach, new quarterback, new defense appears against the Lane Kiffins of the world.

South Alabama at Nebraska, ESPN - Frosty year 2 starts and Nebraska facing big expectations.  Will check the score to see how they fare.

Howard at Maryland, BTN - The Locksley era begins

Akron at Illinois, BTN - Will Love survive?

Indiana at Ball State - How will the new Hoosier offense look?

3:30

Duke at Alabama, ABC - Doubtful Dukies will be up to the task, but how will the Sarkisian offense be for Bammer?

Idaho at Penn State, BTN - What will PSU's QB look like?

Northwestern at Stanford, Fox - Possibly very fun game to see how the Wildcats look after winning the B1G West last year

7:30:

Middle Tennessee St. at Michigan, BTN - Obviously seeing Michigan's new look offense is the lure here

Oregon v. Auburn, ABC - Trying to see the Oregon hype but just not seeing it

Miami(OH) at Iowa - Will Iowa still be Iowa?  Probably

Kickoff at 7 PM.  Brisket went on the pit at 6 AM, should be done around 4 and it'll rest until we serve at 6. Pork spare ribs will go on at 12:30 or so, also to be done by 6.  Gonna smoke a couple of pork tenderloins toi go along with all that just for fun.

My i s c & a aggie wife tells me that some people are bringing sides and appetizers.  I'm not sure why, but I'll let them have at it. :)

Football is back, baby!

I consider Labor Day to be the last day of summer. Although it would technically be Sept 20, according to the Sun.

But definitely not the Saturday before Labor Day.

brother in Round Rock has had the smoker going since 4am

I'm baking skinless brats in the oven for 1 hour 15 minutes

he suggested I should be using the smoker he bought for me, I suggested that I wasn't getting up at 4am!

Bloodies pre-game, brats at halftime

should be 6 or 7 of us crammed into my small livingroom

Ole' the Day

My wife is begging for patacon, which requires very ripe plantains.  Anyone have a good source on that?  I tend to have to buy them and wait forever for them to ripen up.  I guess I need to check out the Mexican grocery store.

Baby backs are on the docket. Mac n' cheese, baked beans and some fresh veg will complete the meal. Gotta hit the farmer's market in a bit.

Having company tonight, so today will be a lot of cleaning the house and preparing. Although I need to run to the homebrew store so might hit Barley Forge Brewing for lunch which is next door.

Menu tonight of tri tip, asparagus with hollandaise, roasted red potatoes, and grilled pineapple with vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Not sure I'll turn on the TV. After last night, I'm just too angry to watch.

Wife is making homemade pizza and pepperoni rolls.  Pepperoni rolls are kind of a WV thing.  She makes good ones but there are plenty of bad ones out there.  Too bready with not enough pepperoni and cheese.

Btw, Florida St is up on Boise 14-6 despite only running 5 plays to Boise’s 29.

Pepperoni rolls have started to spread into Pittsburgh at the "trendy" places like the Strip district. I dunno why it never became a national thing. Its cheap, and usually good, convience store food.

Meanwhile ACC, you know you had 2 freaking years of prep time to get these people called subscribers to your own network.  I can't believe I miss Raycom already.

Perfectly predictable actually. As I said before this season they’re going to show flashes of brilliance and moments of dumbfounding inability    This is a quarterback with virtually no game experience so this will be a bumpy season especially in the first half of the year

Back in the scoring column for the Bucks. Biggest issue seems to be on their read option plays - Fields not keeping much. Not sure if that is by design.

They have only ran 3 all game.  First went 51 yards and td.

The the rest are designed handoffs- as Klatt pointed out just a few minutes ago.
Thats part art of the challenge- they just key on Dobbins.

And later games where they let him run the true read option the running game will be almost impossible to stop. But one hit and feels could be out and then they are truly in deep trouble

Also, Fields as a passer. Getting a lot of JT Barrett vibes. Efficient, accurate, but possibly too conservative passing the ball.

I can’t believe you see that.
Fields- in his first game- goes 19/26 for 234 yards and 4 tds, no interceptions ( and 3 drops!)That would be Barrett’s best day.

Much stronger arm too.  Granted- he doesn’t have enough game experience yet to throw guys open/ but Haskins threw a pick 6 in his first appearance in the shoe.
There red is a reason he beat Trevor Lawrence at the Elite 11 camp.   Give him some time.

Also, apparently, Locks who could have been more of a douche by bypassing the Maryland record for scoring (80), stopped at 79 to honor Jordan McNair.

Strike that. He was just douche enough to score 79, but didn't want to embarrass Howard any farther.

How the hell did they get two 5* OT's in the 2019 class and a LB'er from Cali that was a boderline 5* AND Quavaris Crouch who would've been a 5* if he was focused on playing LB'er and not RB?

Pruitt might not be able to coach a lick, but he sure as hell can recruit talented players. Might not be around to coach them if he keeps this shit up, but the next coach at Tennessee should have a pretty nice foundation to build on.

Stupidest rule in College Football.

Dumb rule is: can't fumble forward, unless it goes to the end zone then the other team gets the ball.

Northwestern 7 - Stanford 10 7:49 left

WTF - NW QB takes the snap, 30 seconds left. He doesn't pass, doesn't hand off, instead runs towards his own goal. "Fumbles" the ball into his own goal and lets Stanford score a TD.

Stanford covers the spread.

If the game stays close then obviously that's the worst possible start and the whole season is in danger. But if it proves anomalous, then the only big deal so far is what they said about Dwumfour limping off. And that my friends is also massive.

Well, the 'Eers did win.

From what I had read pre-season, it seemed like there were a lot of question marks.  That's why I asked about Holgy leaving the cupboard bare.

Fox post game, giving Urban Meyer a little ribbing.
Frank Thomas tried a couple times to get Urban to say something negative about M*ch*g*n, he wouldn't take the bait. So instead they showed Urban's baseball draft day photo, with a stalker stash, and the studio crew has several laughs at his very dated photo.

24 carries for 34 yards against, ahem, James Madison.  Your boy Kendall had a shaky start but settled down as the game went along and made some nice throws in the second half.  Played pretty well especially considering he had zero run game to help him out.

Lots of weirdness on defense. The two starting DTs (Dwumfour and Jeter) are out. Dwumfour has been out since the first series. Jeter we didn't know but that's been since before the game. Their replacements include Ben Mason. He's had some moments, but all this playing time for him is suboptimal.
Michigan needs its top two DTs by the UW game.

Wild ending to the half in Wyoming-Mizzou.  Mizzou was on the 1 on the verge of tying the game right before halftime.  Kid gets hit going into the pile, ball pops out, Wyoming kid scoops it and is taking it back for a TD.  Kelly Bryant actually does a hell of a job of running him down and tackles him as the clock expires, but is called for a horse collar.  This allowed Wyoming to run an untimed play and they kicked a short FG to go into the half up 27-17.

What's the difference between "a thing" and preplanned? There's been lots of talk about 2QB snaps and putting in Dylan for 2+ drives per game to prep him for next year or in case of a Shea injury this year. But when Dylan went in today, it was also because the game was (realistically) over. It's why the other 2nd and 3rd teamers soon followed Dylan out there.

The lower teams in the SEC looked pretty bad indeed, Arkansas pulled out a win as did Florida (over a semi-decent opponent).

Auburn struggled to pull out a win late obviously, but against a good opponent, some luck involved in that one I think.

The Vols were supposed to be "semi-back", and obviously are "semi-bad", or worse.

UGA looked good for three drives and seemed to want to get fancy or something.  They could have run on every down.

They were for their first three drives, then not so much I thought.  I think they could have run the ball for 7-8-9 yards a play but I guess they wanted to work out some kinks and pass some, which makes sense at that point.  Their WR corps is all new in effect, not a single receiver back.

A "fan" nearly always expects "more".  Ha.

I wish the defense could have played as well in the second half as in the first.

Hurts did look good.  He's not as good a passer as Mayfield and Murray, but he's a stronger runner than either of them.  And I think his passing may be good enough.  I was encouraged by his TD pass in (IIRC) the 2nd quarter when he could have easily run up the middle for a 1st down but he pulled up and hit the open receiver downfield.  As I understand it, the rap on him (in his previous play at Bama) has been that if his first receiver isn't open, he pulls it down and runs.  He did some of that tonight, I think, but he usually did better that.

Sooners' place-kicking game needs work.  Specifically, the kicker needs work.  He was missing kicks to the right in the Spring Game, and that's where he missed his two FG attempts tonight.

With Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley any criticism toward the offense is just nitpicking at this point.

FIX THE DEFENSE

31 points given up to Houston and is anyone else not seeing more of the same with Oklahoma? The nation’s most productive offense that will still get held back by a defense that can’t respond when the likes of another Georgia or Alabama slow the offense enough.

Lincoln Riley is the best most innovative offensive coach this game has seen since Chip Kelly took college football by storm at Oregon. Shoot, Riley is probably even better than Chip.

Unfortunately the guy must spend zero time on the defense because man does that defense stink.

The defense may not have to be Clemson/Bama/Georgia-good, just better, as long as the offense can play at a high level.  Had OU had even a mediocre defense--instead of a bad one--in 2017, the Sooners would have beaten Georgia in the Rose Bowl and gone on to play Bama in the NCG.

The tackling was definitely better.  If that's our only improvement, then we're better than last year.

We got a red-zone takeaway that was called back.  I didn't see the replay, so I can't comment on the call.

The catch out of bounds that got ruled a Houston completion was IMO a bad call that wasn't clearly bad enough for the replay official to overturn.

The PF on Fields on the play after he was called for DPI was, IMO, ticky-tack.  The Houston receiver initiated it.

Had any one of those calls gone our way, we would have held them to 24 points and be feeling a bit better about the defensive performance.

In a way, I'm glad those calls didn't go our way, as the 31 points allowed (in a win) gives Alex Grinch more ammunition with which to motivate the troops to do better next time, and the time after that, and so on.

I think the defense will be a work in progress.  I think it will be much better than last year (a low bar to clear) by the second half of the season.

CWSooner - The below article from the Ringer lays out the uniquely bad position the defense has put OU/Riley in. In short, the badness of the 114th ranked total offense (last season) didn’t cost Oklahoma two years of National Championship chances by not being LSU’s, Michigan’s, or Georgia’s defense - Oklahoma missed out on two National Championship chances because they couldn’t even manage to be about the 75th best nationally - about what the Duke and Maryland’s defenses managed last year.

Cats:

Without even reading the article I agree.  The defenses of the past two years were horrifically bad.  Many sooner fans believe that even a below-average defense the last two years would have allowed the team to have won a national championship.

No way of telling, of course, but the 2OT loss to Georgia in the Rose Bowl seems to support that notion.

I wish Lincoln Riley would have fired Mike Stoops before he did, like after the 2017 season.  We'd now be in our second year of recovery rather than first.

We'll see how good Houston's offense turns out to be this year.  They were #7 in total offense last year.  D'Eriq King is a very good QB.

My last point mitigating/making excuses for our defense tonight is that we had two turnovers.  Both of them set up Houston scores, for 10 points total.

Post-game, Hurts said that the offense needs to clean up its sloppy play.  My thought on the sloppy play is that four of the five O-linemen were making their first starts, and the other one, C Creed Humphrey, is a sophomore with 12 starts last year.  One of the TOs took place in a scrum when the O-line couldn't generate a push.

The South Dakota game next week won't tell us much, and it looks like the trip out to UCLA in two weeks probably won't either.  I'm not sure how good Texas Tech's offense will be this year, what with a new coach.  I doubt that Kansas will be an offensive juggernaut.  We may have to wait until the Texas game to really gauge the defense's progress.

Teams with huge offenses rarely have good defenses.
That being said, yes, statistically, OU's defense was horrific last year, especially for a team with such a good record and NC aspirations.  That defense (or lackthereof) made me scoff at anyone who picked the Sooners to win the playoff.  And there were a couple of you.

Yup. Impossible to win championships with that sort of ineptitude on defense.

Reminds me of the Chiefs last year or the year the Pats had the #1 offense but the 31st ranked defense and lost their 2nd Super Bowl to the Giants.

I think a truly elite defense is probably better than having an elite offense in most cases.

Grinch did a pretty good job at Wazzou under the Pirate.Statistically they improved every year, not sure what happened in C-Bus.Urbz brought him in and made him co-coordinator with Schiano.Never been a fan of two coaches at one position unless one was being groomed and that didn't appear to be the case(IMO).Thought Grinch would be taking over the reigns under URbz.Once Meyer announced stepping down all bets were off.Maybe Grinch jumped at the opportunity of a similiar program.Maybe things wouldn't have worked out with Day,who knows.Anyway in Pullman Grinch's stock was rising, sort of plateaued in C-Bus,now he has the reigns again so we'll find out

What stats would a "good defense" put up playing in the Big 12?  Take UGA as a pretty decent defense, when they played OU they gave up a lot of points (one on a scoop and score TD).  Some of this defense stuff is because your opponents also focus on offense.

Perhaps Texas this year is an example of a pretty decent defense?

It would be interesting to see a stat of how a defense held the opposition UNDER or OVER their averages on offense, taking out pastries.

I agree.  A dominant defense plus a serviceable offense is more reliable than the opposite.  OU's NCs of the '70s and '80s were built around dominant defenses.

To get back to whether OU's defense is improved or not, compare last night's game with the Kansas game of last year, played on 17 November.  Kansas rushed for 348 yards, 201 more yards than against any other Big 12 team.  Kansas scored 40 points, 12 more than against any other Big 12 teams (and exceeded only by the 55 yards they hung on Rutgers).

Several teams OU played last year put up season-high or near-season-high numbers.  Texas scored 48, Texas Tech 46, West Virginia 56.  I suspect that 408 yards total offense and 31 points are not going to be Houston's season highs.

TCU typically has a good defense even in the B12.

And yes, I think you should probably look at how the defense does against teams outside its own conference to get an idea of whether or not it's "good" relative to other teams.  You don't even really need to take out the pastries if you're comparing a team's performance against one defense, relative to its average performance against all other opponents, as you suggested.

I was just thinking that a pastry is playing mostly other pastries, to a P5 team would look a lot better in general against them.

But relative performance in some sense is what counts, not absolute.

With teams only playing 3 or 4 OOC games, I don't think you get much data if you remove all the cupcakes.  Especially for those pastry-loving teams in the SECSECSEC. ;)

You can do it against conference opponents obviously, even 100% and get useful data.

If OU gave up 325 yards against Oklahoma State, but they averaged 425 yards, that is a good outing relatively.

I think every P5 team should play 10 P5 opponents each year.  My Dawgs have a couple of pastries over the next two weeks and it's boring.  Of course, the Vols had a pastry that didn't go down well.

I still can't believe that game.

OU vs UGA last year is a sample size of one, and basically meaningless.  OU's season totals on defense were valid - they happened, and as has been said, they allowed a lot of season-highs to opposing offenses.

OU vs Houston is also a sample size of one.  Houston may have a top 5 offense, nationally.  We have to wait and see.  So saying the defense is the same as last year AND saying it's improved are both too early to tell.

As for great defense > great offense...
logically, a point allowed is not equal to a point scored.  If you don't allow any points, you cannot lose.  You can win, lose or tie if you score, but you can only win or tie if you allow no points.

Well sort of, but I believe what we were originally trying to tease out here, is whether B12 defensive absolute stats are higher than... say... SEC absolute defensive stats because the defenses are worse?  Or because they face better offenses on average?

So separating out the conference and OOC stats is a key way to help make that determination.

For individual teams, rather than the entire conference, if you're trying to figure out if that ONE defense is better than the absolute stats might make it appear, then sure, the average of ALL games played could be used.  In that case, if you're looking at Texas' 2018/19 defense then you'd look at the absolute yards/points allowed against an opponent, and then compare it to that opponent's average yards/ppg against all non-Texas opponents. Overall I think last year Texas' defense was pretty good and usually allowed fewer points/yards than the opponent scored otherwise, although I haven't looked too closely at the numbers.

And hopefully this year the defense will be even better, although we lost quite a few starters.

A good question, and I think I can give an interesting answer.

I started with that 2017 UGA team, was there a Big 12 team that year with a good D? Based on advanced stats, which adjust for opposition and often tempo, the answer is yes. Texas.

That year UGA was 12th in S&P+ defense, Texas 14th, about a point difference. In FEI, based on drive data, UGA was 4th, Texas 7th, though there was a bit of a gap with them being that close.

In terms of raw stats, Texas vs UGA.
Texas allowed 4.8 more PPG (6th vs 29th)
0.5 yards per play (10th vs 37th)
71.7 YPG (6th vs 43rd)
7.5 more plays (16th vs 72nd)

They were pretty close in points per drive as well, factoring out FCS.

Horns don't play FCS. :)

Interesting.  How specifically do the advanced stats take into account that Texas is likely playing more high-scoring/high yardage offenses in the B12 than Georgia is in the SEC?

Bayareabadger brings up a good point.  S&P+ is a better metric than raw stats.

In 2018 (https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ncaadef/2018), Oklahoma was #84 in S&P+.  That's unacceptably bad, but it's not as bad as the raw stats--including 129th in pass defense--indicated.

Teams that ranked lower in last year's S&P+ that you don't automatically think of as having had "garbage" defenses were Arizona State (86), Purdue (88), Ole Miss (90), UCLA (97), Louisville (99), and Georgia Tech (100).  TCU (16) was the best Big 12 team.

Interestingly, the distance between ratings shrinks when you get to teams ranked low.  There was less distance in the S&P+ ratings between Nevada (S&P+ of 28.0, ranked #63) and Oklahoma (30.0/#84) than there was between Mississippi State (10.5/#1) and Clemson (12.6/#3).  I'm not sure what that means.  Maybe that there were a lot of teams with pretty bad defenses.

Notre Dame's defense looks pretty weak. The QBs 3 fumbles are the main reason Louisville hasn't scored more.... Also has anyone else every seen a sequence of fumbles on 3 consecutive plays? I sure haven't.

Meanwhile, Louisville's defense doesn't look that great, but they're still getting enough stops to keep the game close. We'll see how the domers do against the rest of the first half of their schedule, but this game looks a lot less dangerous than I was expecting....

My junior year in HS I played in a game where the teams turned it over on 3 consecutive plays.  We fumbled it, the next play I recovered a fumble to get it back (the whole reason I told this story 😉), and we fumbled it back the very next play.

I think people who don't remember seeing 3 consecutive fumbles before, don't remember watching a lot of option football/wishbone, etc.  Not that it was a weekly thing, but I recall it, and other combinations of 3 consecutive turnovers.

A lot of fumbling tonight, generally.

Last year GT fumbled on three consecutive plays with the ball (not necessarily with Duke fumbling as well in succession).    I know it happened in an NFL game, somebody posted that it occurred in a Redskins/Falcons game this century.   They also were talking about the Rams/Bears had 3 turnovers on one play within the last decade.

The first part is they're built either on per-play or per-drive data. So that reduces some of the tempo factor. After that, they adjust for opponent quality in their respective metrics. I do not know the finer points of that math, though to a degree I think it's sort of a complex matrix of how did you hold a team below or above its usual output.

There may have been fumbles on 3 straight plays when I went to the Florida @ Tennessee game, I'm thinking 2002.  Let me check.

Yup...in the rain in Knoxville, UTK fumbled 7 times in the first half, including...
After a scoreless first quarter, the rain began falling heavily,
and that's when the Gators swamped the Vols. In a sequence that saw
Tennessee fumble the ball on four consecutive plays, the Gators ran
to a 24-0 halftime lead.

They didn't lose all those fumbles, but they happened.  Here's what happened:
Fumbled snap (in the rain), turnover.
Florida scores.
Fumbled kickoff return, turnover.
Florida immediately throws an INT at the 1 yd line.
Fumbled snap, recovered.
Fumbled snap, recovered.

So on Tennessee's end, that's 4 straight fumbles.

From the Tuesday post-practice press conference in Lincoln::::

Husker secondary coach Travis Fisher would be lying if he said he hasn't thought about some item like Miami's "Turnover Chain" that Nebraska players get after a takeaway. But in the end, he decided, "I don't think that's Nebraska football. I think it's just, hey, let's put on the hard hat and let's go play physical football."

I told you last time to check with me.  Maybe now you'll listen. :)

Obviously the things you'd want to seek out here would be regionally specific foods that you can't find elsewhere, at least not as high-quality version.  So Tex-Mex and CenTex style BBQ.  Steakhouses are good here but you can get good steak almost anywhere.  And we actually have a few REALLY excellent French places, too, but again that's not something to seek out in these here parts.

Surprisingly, chili is actually not a great restaurant-food around here, it's much more of a home-cooked food.  And of course a competition food.  But the number of restaurants that make it well, or even at all, is pretty small.  Kinda weird, not sure why that is.

I think restaurant chili is usually not something that brings people in (outside Cincinnati, if we call that chili).  So place just do something reasonable on the menu and it's good enough, having something excellent wouldn't aid sales.

We were staying with a friend of my wife and I had some notion she'd know where to go.  She didn't.  At one point I said I wanted to take her out to dinner and she suggested Longhorn, I kid you not.  I guess it was nearby, as if that's a good reason to dine there.

I did have serious fun at COTA though driving some fast cars.  Now with Kid 2 living in New Braunsfel, we have another reason to go.

I gather there isn't a whole lot in that town though.

The wife went to have her nails done yesterday.  She's not driving with her leg issues, so I drove her.  The place is in a local shopping mall, an old one, but it's crowded.  I figured I'd meander around, they had a kitchen store that was nicely equipped.  Anyway, I see folks going into a tanning booth store.

Really?  It's 92°F outside and full sun and you need a tanning booth?  Plus it's radiation, which if someone built a nuclear reactor nearby you'd have a fit (there used to be one at Tech, but it's closed now).

Reminded me of being in San Diego and seeing 3 fleet carriers docked across the bay, each with two nuclear reactors on board.

I don’t mind the chain restaurants.  I’ve had plenty of meals I’ve enjoyed at Outback, Olive Garden, Longhorn, etc.  Of course my parents didn’t have a lot of money so those kinds of places were considered “nice restaurants” during my formative years.
I generally don't go to chains because I like to support the local mom and pop places.

We had no money when I was a kid, like you. So when we did go out, if was to one of those local Greek-owned places with a book for a menu. And we kids thought that was the chit too. Sometimes I still do, as we have a couple of those in town. You can get today's dinner and tomorrow's lunch for $10. I think it costs $10 to have crap at Burger King now.

I told him what many people don’t realize is the “garbage” they speak of is actually immigrant food—Greek and Macedonian immigrant food to be specific. The city’s first chili parlor was Empress Chili, which was opened just next to the Empress Burlesque Theater by John Kiradjieff and Ilias Kiradjief, immigrants from northern Greece who came to America in the 1920s. Just as Lombardi’s is the first pizza parlor in New York City, Empress was the first chili parlor in Cincinnati. And, though its original location is long gone, we honor it with an equal amount of reverence.

Oh, me too.  The Sizzler was a great expensive dining experience when I was a kid.  We'd go to an all you can eat Catfish place hereabouts on Fridays sometimes.  I got to liking catfish, fried in corn meal.  Those places are gone now of course.

Ponderosa was another place we'd go at times.

I've learned that I don't have to spend a fortune to get a nice, interesting, fun dining experience.

We don't have many chili restaurants, but at least we still have a lot of places around that will do catfish fried in cornmeal!  All you can eat, even, which was a bargain when I was a teen/20s, but now usually just a couple of filets will do.

Yeah, I saw a full episode on it on one of those Food Network shows maybe 15 years ago.  I like to make fun of Cincy-style chili but in reality it's a cool story.  Probably never should have been called chili in the fist place but, many decades later well, here we are. :)

Ah, the 24 hr Greek family restaurants.  The bread basket with breadsticks and crackers.  If you're lucky a relish tray.  Huge menus.  Those are still around but not in the same numbers, and many are no longer 24/7.  Apparently gen Z and Millenials don't hang out there.

About the only times you see a relish tray anymore is a Wisconsin Supper Club.

Yeah, I’m with ya on supporting the local places.  Had lunch at one today.  But we do chains a lot like if we’re out of town for travel softball or something.  Don’t know the town and don’t really want to take the time to research anything.  Hey, there’s Applebee’s.  Let’s go.

When I was a kid if we went to Shoney’s (not sure if they even have those in the northeast or midwest) it was like a big treat.

Really?  It's 92°F outside and full sun and you need a tanning booth?  Plus it's radiation, which if someone built a nuclear reactor nearby you'd have a fit (there used to be one at Tech, but it's closed now).

This is the time of year where is stays hot down here and the heat breaks in Ohio (usually).  It breaks here more mid-month.  Today was pretty nice, we had lunch outside in the shade, nice breeze, low RH, 91°F and 34% RH, I can deal with that.  We're headed out to dinner later and then tomorrow to Seattle.  I timed this one right, the Dawgs are playing two pastries in a row and then it gets real.

Vandy didn't look awful really.

I have a weird soft spot for Olive Garden. It's not especially good compared to good Italian food, but it's rich and hearty and satisfying. And then the soup salad breadsticks combo may be a horrible meal both nutritionally and from a "foodie" perspective, but I'll eat my money's weight lol...

Was Shoney's "Home of the Big Boy"?  They had those out west--far west--back in the early '60s.  But IIRC they were called "Kip's."

I was fine with OG until I learned that they both boil AND freeze all their food.  They do it to avoid all possible food poisoning, and I'm sure it's fine, but to me, if something is boiled AND frozen, that's going to mess with it...molecularly.

Unscientific, but for whatever reason, it really bothers me.  For a food item to endure both extremes, how can it be itself?

Agree.  Dry heat >> humidity.  I can take Phoenix/Las Vegas weather over Houston/New Orleans any day of the week.  Austin is somewhere in the middle, mostly good but occasionally brutal humidity.

It works the other way, too.  I was working in Minnesota through December many years ago and went out at 7:30 AM to start my car.  I was wearing jeans and short sleeves and it felt fine, I started my car, headed back into the hotel, grabbed a jacket and a mini muffin, a went to work.  It was 5 degrees F that morning.  But because it was cold but clear and completely still, I didn't really feel it.

On the other hand, if it's below freezing here (which obviously rarely happens) it's because a major front came through.  It's typically going to be windy, rainy, and it feels way colder than that calm, supercold morning in Minneapolis.  (Obviously staying outside for more than that 5 minutes, it would have started to feel a lot colder, no arguing that!)

Also please note I'm not saying Minneapolis doesn't have brutally cold weather, obviously it does.  There were other days when it was snowing, windy, blustery cold.  Overall those bits were miserable for this native Texican.  I was there from mid October through Dec 23rd and the day I was leaving the locals told me I was lucky to be going home before it got really cold.  I think it was about 10 degrees F and snowing that day.  And they were 100% correct, I felt lucky to be headed home before the really cold stuff hit. ;)

Oh-- another thing about that trip to Minneapolis, when I got there in mid October, most of the trees were still in full Fall color mode.  It was so beautiful.  I do occasionally envy you yankees that have 4 seasons.

The only problem is that one season y'all have, that's WAY too cold and WAY too long! :)

I rarely go there, not a big Italian food guy and there are 2 other Italian places that are better, but when I do dine at Olive Garden I'm surprised at how good the sauces are.  Bread sticks and salad are well above average.

Anyway, the best chili is always the pot you make.  I like it very meaty and throw veggies in - it's more like a chili-ish stew.  Scallop potatoes and green beans, and some regular beans, but very few.  The "other" ingredients should still fall short of the meat content.

I miss pasta.  I've been doing the keto thing for about 6 weeks now, and dropping weight.  It's been pretty easy for me.  I'm distracted researching what I can eat instead of internally complaining about what I can't eat.

I think time ran out on my biological clock last year, in terms of eating whatever i wanted and still being limber.  38 years was a good run.  Then foot and lower-leg ailments kept happening and I gained a bunch of weight.  Meh.

I feel much more like myself the last couple of months.  Too bad I bought a new belt when I was at my fattest - that was a waste of $$$.  I've always been able to lose weight without much trouble, but I'd drop it for a month, then go back to eating crap again.  This time, I'm just going to keep at it, see where it takes me, BMI-wise.

The thing I have the biggest craving for, being off carbs/sugar, oddly enough, is a bowl of cereal.  Not pasta or chips or bread even....just a bowl of sugary milk and Cinnamon Life cereal.

I'm hoping to avoid injuring myself, which is embarrassing to say, but true.  Exercising at X-lbs is good for you, but exercising at X minus 20 lbs is 'safer'.

I need to be smart about it and do the 'lame' low-impact stuff instead of what I've always done - high-impact lifting, 3 hrs of basketball, etc.
