1. (2) Ohio State
2. (1) Michigan
3. (7) Penn State
4. (8) Wisconsin
5. (5) Michigan State
6. (9) Iowa
7. (4) Northwestern

11. (3) Nebraska
12. (6) Minnesota
13. (10) Indiana
14. (11) Purdue

I don't think the first week means much, but it does in my rankings. If you play an FCS team and nearly get beat, like Minnesota, I am docking you. If you play an apparently substantial team, like Wisconsin, and pound them, I am rewarding you.

Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Illinois made the biggest impressions.

1. Michigan: Not exactly the shock and awe fans were hoping for, but you could see the offense had a more explosive gear despite some health problems.  I wasn't impressed with trying to wedge in two quarterbacks when you are trying to master a new offense.  Also, the defense looked a crumb worse than I expected.  Still, this team can play defense, run the ball, and now take deep shots.  That's a tough combo to beat.

2. Ohio State: Truly a best of times, worst of times scenario.  The offense looked amazing for a quarter, the defense looked amazing for a half.  Overall, the biggest issue was that the running game was still a little wobbly, and Fields was just a hair slow pulling the trigger.  However, he was efficient and accurate throwing, and showed he can make big plays in the running game if the coaches let him.  The defense looks worlds better than last year.

3. Penn State: Unlike the top two, looked completely dominant against their jobber opponent.  Though they probably should have measured Idaho's pulse for signs of life before the game started.

4. Wisconsin: Giving them a bump for going on the road and wiping out South Florida.  A Wisconsin team with a functional passing game is a very strong team.

5. Michigan State: Guh.  Defense still strong, but man did we want to see some improvement out of the offense.

6. Iowa: Still got that Iowa feeling.

7. Minnesota: Not a great looking effort, but perhaps they can row the boat to more consistency this year.

8. Maryland: Blasted the bejeezus out of poor Howard.

9. Purdue: This team needs a pep talk from Jim Tressel.

10. Nebraska: Lump them in with the disappointed in their start group.

11. Northwestern: Probably too low, honestly forgot about them.  Kind of like how they forgot their offense.

12. Illinois: An actual pretty doinant effort against Akron.

13. Indiana: Offense a bit more functional.  Defense not so much.

14. Rutgers: They will always have that time they scored 31 in a quarter.

1. Wisconsin - Not sold on them, but give them credit for shutting out what should be a decent USF team.
2. Michigan - Should've been more definitive (2 dumb TOs lead to TDs and some missed opportunities on offense), but I was definitely encouraged by the new offense.
3. Ohio State - Dominated early. I didn't watch it so I'm not sure if / how many of their starters were taken out in the second half.
4. Penn State - Yes they won convincingly but Idaho is really that bad.
5. Michigan State - Great defense but still bad on offense.
6. Iowa - Struggled early against Miami OH but dominated the second half.
7. Northwestern - Stanford is a good team, and they nearly came back to beat them, but they looked even worse than usual on offense.
8. Minnesota - Only this high due to preseason expectations, considering they struggled with South Dakota State. We'll see....
9. Illinois - Only this high by default and surprisingly dominating Akron, which is probably still a bad MAC team, to be sure.
10. Purdue - Just a big choke against Nevada, which might be a MWC contender to be fair.
11. Nebraska - South Alabama was a bad team last year so struggling with them is a bad sign.
12. Maryland - Maybe I should give them more credit for annihilating a bad team, but I'm still skeptical.
13. Indiana - Struggled with Ball State, which was a bad MAC team last year.
14. Rutgers - Horrible start and then dominated, but I still think that might be their last win of the season

I wouldn't change anything except that Nebraska may be not as good as I had been thinking preseason.

The lower half is "NVG", but that is true for every conference it would appear.  The bottom of the SEC looks worse than usual.

Man, this season snuck up on me. I am still hip deep in Soccer world, and crap I had two games to get to on Saturday.
I missed all the contests and preseason ranking of the teams. so here is my Week 1 ranking.

1. Penn State - jeepers, did the other team even show up?

2. Michigan - one of these years the greatest coach in TTUN history has to win the big games right?
3. Wisconsin - hammered South Florida in their neck of the woods.
4. Ohio State - 1st 7 minutes of OSU looked like World Beaters, the next 53 minutes they actually lost to the Crying Kiffins 17-21
5. Nebraska - I always put them higher cause of helmet, maybe one year I'll be right.
6. Michigan State - Stellar D again
7. Iowa - strong win
8. Maryland - WOW, I think Marylands 1st string can compete with just about anyone.
9. Northwestern - not sold on Stanford being any good.
10. Indiana - Got the W
11. Purdue - these jokers took OSU behind the woodshed. ???
12. Minnesota - avoided the upset
13. Illinois - did't see the game, just don't have farith they are as good as the box score.
14. Rutgers - ...

I actually did not see either the MD or PSU game but based on the scores, I assume both Idaho and Howard are really bad.  I heard Howard's punt team must be especially awful, which helped give MD 5 TD's.

No big deal.  If people want to rank MD higher than PSU based on MD's big win over Howard, it's ok with me.  Just thought it was interesting.

1. Ohio State - Looked good until they went up by 28 in the 1st qtr. It looks like they took their foot off the gas and lost focus.
2. Michigan - MT gave them some early fits, but UM got it together and put it away
3. Penn State - Glorified scrimmage. Still no idea on how good/bad they may be.
4. Wisconsin - Ditto
5. Michigan State - Impressive Def. From what little bit I saw, the offense is still a concern
6. Iowa - Didn't see it, but saw that Miami OH gave them a game for a while
7. Northwestern - Could put them ahead of Iowa. Played great on D, but couldn't do much offensively
8. Nebraska - Still gotta get the kinks worked out on their offense
9. Maryland - Glorified scrimmage. Still no idea on how good/bad they may be. But it was impressive. Could move up quite a bit on this list.
10. Indiana - Had some trouble with Ball state. But pulled it out.
11. Illinois - Handled Akron. So far, looks improved from previous years.
12. Minnesota - Too much trouble with SKS. Sure, they are a good FCS team, but still.
13. Rutgers - Had to come back against UMass. Wasn't sure that Coach Ash would have his job today had they lost.

14. Purdue - Worst loss in the conference.

Others did not do much that was "notable"

^^ It's just Week 1.  Putting up 80 on Idaho or Howard tells us more about how bad they are than how good PSU and UMD are.  Illinois was able to put Akron away early, but again, the Zips are probably one of the 10 weakest teams in the FBS division, so even a lightly-regarded P5 team should be able to beat Akron with ease.  The only one that might have been a surprise was how dominant Wisconsin was @ USF, but it's entirely possible that USF is just that bad and might finish in the lower half of the AAC.

On the other hand, Purdue, Northwestern, Nebraska and Minnesota all struggled on Saturday, but all of them are certainly capable of improving and becoming a factor in the West.

1) Ohio State: until someone knocks them off.
2) Michigan: turnovers and giving up 21 to MTSU probably aren't what the fans want to see.
3) Penn State: um...79 points. I know it was Idaho, but 79!?!
4) Wisconsin: dominated a respectable opponent on the road.
5) Iowa: 28 points in the second half is pretty nice; 10, and a 3-point lead, in the first half wasn't.
6) Michigan State: three points in the second half probably isn't what the fans wanted, but a 21-point win is a 21-point win.
7) Northwestern: losing on the road to Stanford isn't shameful, but the Cats didn't look good.
8) Minnesota: not a good sign to eek out a win over an FCS team, even a really good one. But a win is better than a loss.
9) Nebraska: an easy win is a win, but it's not as though Nebraska played a team with a chance.
10) Maryland: 79 points. Not as impressive against Howard as it is against Idaho (?), but still, that's a lot of points.
11) Purdue: going on the road is hard; blowing a 17-point lead against Nevada is bad.
12) Illinois: quietly maybe the most promising result for a Big Ten team of the day?
13) Indiana: a win over Ball State isn't anything for this program to turn its nose up at.
14) Rutgers: 31 points in a quarter is neat, even against UMass, and a win is nice. Giving up 21 points in a quarter to UMass is bad.

I would go with Maryland and Illinois substantially better than expected, Northwestern and Purdue worse than expected. It's not that they lost, it's how they lost. Northwestern's four turnovers and 210 yards of total offense were brutal. No passing threat, no running threat, but to be fair the defense played well. Purdue's five turnovers=very bad. It's inability to run the ball with a 17-point lead, also very bad.

+1 with the caveat that it is very hard to get a read out of most of these games.  Ie, did the fact that Ohio State got outscored 21-17 over the final (what was it?) ~50 minutes indicate problems for the Buckeyes or just indicate that they were comfortable and took their foot off the gas?  Similarly with PSU and UMD it is hard to know if scoring almost 80 points is an indication that UMD/PSU are that good or that Idaho/Howard are that bad.

2) Michigan: turnovers and giving up 21 to MTSU probably aren't what the fans want to see.
The part of the D performance that will stick is that the tackle depth is as bad as it's been in years and with Dwumfour and Jeter out it was ... alarming. But MTSU couldn't take much advantage. And never drove on the first two strings.
So the points themselves weren't concerning. 14 came after short field turnovers and  the last 7 happened in garbage time on the 3rd string. So while you can definitely apply "aren't what the fans want to see" to some stuff,  I don't think the 21 points are it. Those are mostly getting a shoulder shrug.

Perhaps. In my experience, fans of top-tier, or wanna-be top-tier programs look for blowouts in these types of games and make excuses for why it doesn't bother them when they don't happen. Could well be a blip on the radar--and I still have Michigan as the top contender to OSU, but I bet this win didn't set all that well with most of the rabid fans.
Title: Re: B1G Power Rankings, Week 1
Post by: Anonymous Coward on September 03, 2019, 03:16:58 PM
The game is definitely sitting somewhere between meh and not well. But like I said, the reason isn't MTSU's points; I thought Michigan fans were reasonable about that even during the live threads, which isn't common for the fan base. On defense, it's the DT position deptth. With Dwumfour and Jeter out, Ben Mason played. For those who don't know, he was last season's starting full back. He is emphatically not a DT. That depth is terrifying for the season, even if MTSU wasn't built to capitalize (but ~10/12 of Michigan's opponents will be). And, on offense, we disliked the hokey 2QB snaps and how awkward and unpracticed they seemed.

Obviously, the turnovers were a drag -- but again less because MTSU needed them to score than because they eliminated more opportunities for Michigan to score. There's this undercurrent in the fanbase that the new offense has changed a lot, and it's positive, but that we wanted more (mostly more consistency). That series that went (a) RPO 10+ yards to Tarik Black, (b) RPO 10+ yards to Tarik Black, (c) play action to Nico Collins for the TD was beautiful offense. And the fanbase clearly wanted the whole game to look like that.

as my post on the Gopher game thread before the Huskers kicked off stated...........

I'd rather have my team get the win, but not cover the spread, no blowout

keeps kids humble and working hard in practice instead of having them reading press clippings and assuming they have arrived

but yes, most fans want blowouts, want their team to look near perfect and projecting to win out of the remainder of the schedule

I'm a critic, a fan, and knowledgeable about football, especially when it comes to Maryland, and I can tell you, I got NOTHING from this game.  I know some think I'm a huge homer when it comes to the talent, but some of you same dudes who mock me for it, are probably happy with them on your NFL team.

79 points against a team that barely threw the ball, couldn't handle a snap during punts, and Lines that seemed like they just didn't care, overshadows the fact that Ron Prince is the coach, and Cam Newton's little brother is the QB.

I can say that if we ran more than 5 plays that game, I'd be surprised, but they didn't do anything but collect a check.

The only reason we play FCS in-state schools, like other teams around the country (Clemson and uSC for example) is to divvy out money for them to stay afloat.

Then again, I watched Syracuse, and they didn't look like a Top 25 team either, and they DID run many plays.

I'll be interested to see how we stack up against the second best team in the ACC.

PSU and Maryland faced similar competition last week. However well a system rates one performance, if that system is coherent, it should rate the other similarly well.

I think Maryland may have faced a tougher team, if I'm honest.  Idaho was just not good.

Sometimes you just have to throw up your hands and give up on comparing.

I've seen a few of the computer things and Idaho is mostly ranked higher (like, 175 vs. 250) but does it really matter?

Has Idaho dropped down to 1-AA yet? Should they combine with Idaho State?

I mean, how many schools does Idaho need, with a population about the size of Phoenix?

Yes, they dropped down to FCS last year, I think.  They were 4-7 in the FCS or somesuch.

BYU-I is pretty big, too.  I think most of the population is in college or something.  haha

Idaho could be swallowed up by WSU. They are like 5 miles apart.

Idaho and Montana were once in the Pac 12 (back before it was called the Pac #).
