BTN had a women's field hockey game on the broadcast
I noticed the hockey sticks were very short, the young ladies had to bend quite a bit to be able to make a swipe at the ball. MAny times they nearly laid the stick flat on the field to control the ball.
WTH???
why not give them decent tools for the trade? Afraid someone might get a stick to the teeth?

Field Hockey is a weird game. They drench the field regularly with hundreds of gallons of water, for whatever reason. Then there are these really crazy penalties that are sorta like a soccer corner kick only the entire defense has to get inside the goal until the ball is put in play, then they all burst out of the goal onto the field gangbusters, and start playing some serious D. They all have to put a bunch of extra pads on just for that play. Low scoring though, like Hockey or Soccer instead of Lacrosse.

Disastrous season for MSU soccer.
After losing in the Elite 8 in 3 of the previous 5 years, they finally made it to the College Cup last year, losing in the Final 4.
Opened this season ranked #7, but have only won 1 of their 9 games (1-6-2), dropping 3-0 to Penn State on BTN the other night.

Badger women's soccer is up to #13, with big wins at Rutgers and vs. Penn State. Currently one of two teams unbeaten in BigTen play; Michigan is the other--they play each other in Madison today.

Cool piece on my friend's daughter at Michigan. She and I and worked together for several years and spent a lot of time talking youth sports, including hearing about how Jessica was progressing in water polo. Though it may pain me to say it (actually, it doesn't), getting that Michigan offer was such a huge reward.

MSU finished ranked in the Big Ten where they began the season ranked nationally. Ton of injuries coming off a Final 4 run last year.

The MAC announced the launch of their wlax Conference in 2020. It will have Akron and Kent, CMU and EMU at it's core, with Detroit Mercy and Youngstown St as affiliates.
So College wlax in the Midwest is getting pretty strong, with those six plus Northwestern, Ohio St and Michigan in the Big Ten, Notre Dame and Louisville in the ACC, Marquette and Butler in the Big East, along with Cincinnati in the AAC.
Ohio U may have thrown in the towel a little early. Perhaps the MAC launch will inspire them to get back after it. Or not.

All of the remaining Big Ten women's soccer teams exited the tournament yesterday in the round of 16.
2-seed UCLA beat 3-seed Wisconsin, 2-0 in Westwood.
1-seed Stanford beat 4-seed Penn State, 2-0 in Palo Alto.
1-seed North Carolina beat unseeded Michigan, 4-0 in Chapel Hill.
Hard to play at the opponent's home.
Half of the remaining 8 teams play in the Pac-12: Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Washington State. 2 ACC: Florida State and North Carolina, then BYU and South Carolina. Quarterfinals are home games for the high seeds; semi-finals and finals are in San Jose, just down the road for Stanford.

Fall Semester is in the books.
Michigan came roaring out of the gates, taking the first five; soccer, w soccer, volleyball(x2), and Field Hockey.
OSU won the Rugby game handily, but it didn't count, since it is a club sport.
But then OSU hit 'em wear it hurt, taking a pair of Ice Hockey games, as well as THE GAME on the gridiron.
5-3 Maize.
Spring Semester is just loaded with events, and of course some post season bouts are always possible with conference tourneys in just about every sport. So still a long way to go.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Isaiah White (165) won his second consecutive individual title and the No. 2 Nebraska wrestling team won their third Cliff Keen Invitational team title in program history on Saturday night at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev. White was one of nine Huskers who placed as NU amassed 118 team points, the most among the 32 schools competing. The team title is Nebraska's first since 2008; the Huskers also took home the title in 2003. In both seasons, Nebraska went on to record Top-5 finishes at the NCAA Championships.

When did Nebraska become a wrestling power?
This week Iowa WBB defeated #17 Maryland and #12 Indiana extending the home winning streak to 30, 2nd longest home winning streak behind Baylor.
Iowa WBB lost in the Elite 8 last season to Baylor. They had 4 Miss B-Balls from different states. The only one who wasn't Miss B-Ball in HS was Naismith Award winner Megan Gustafson (and leading D-1 scorer in the nation 2-seasons). After losing Megan Gustafson and 2-Miss B-Balls, I figured these Hawkeye women would be down. But after today, unranked Iowa is still ticking, tied for 1st in the Big Ten.
Kathleen Doyle (Sr.) is the leader, 2016 Illinois Miss B-Ball. She is scrappy. McKenzie Meyer (Sr.) is good, too, 2016 Iowa Miss B-Ball. And they have an incredibly well-organized support cast. It would be tough to win the Big Ten title this year, but that they are so competitive is surprising.

It wasn't much the same between Penn St and Nebraska. Each team won five matches. It came down to Penn St getting a major decision that Nebraska did not get. Hawkeyes seem well-positioned to win the Big Ten and NCAA for the first tie since 2010.

I continue in my amazement about Hawkeye Women's Basketball (17-3 / 8-1), now alone in 1st place in the Big Ten, a year after losing Megan Gustafson, the 2-time NCAA season scoring leader, and a top rebounder, to graduation.
The Hawkeyes are squeaking by some of their opponents. They seem to play tougher in the stretch run of the game. They have a several very good players and one star, a guard, Kathleen Doyle, who leads the Big Ten in scoring. The Hawkeyes have a bevy of people who come off the bench, and do well. For example, today McKenna Warnock filled-in in the 3rd and 4th qtrs. for Monika Czinano in the game against MSU. Warnock scored 20 points.

LINCOLN -- The No. 6 Nebraska wrestling team used a last-second, match-clinching pin from a hobbled No. 4 Isaiah White (165) to defeat No. 3 Ohio State 19-14 in front of 1,675 fans at the Devaney Center on Sunday afternoon. The Huskers (7-3, 2-3 Big Ten) won six of ten bouts overall to record their first victory over a top three-rated opponent since 2008.
No. 6 Mikey Labriola (174) set the tone for what would be a thrilling meet with a match-opening 3-1 victory. The returning All-American sophomore from Easton, Pa., battled No. 7 Kaleb Romero to a 1-1 tie as time was winding down in Period 3. Labriola was then able to get in on a shot and record a takedown before the buzzer sounded as Romero attempted to crawl away. Ohio State challenged the takedown, but officials confirmed the call on the mat following video review. Nebraska was, however, deducted one team point at the conclusion of the match for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Huskers Upset Ohio State and Michigan State on Day One
The Huskers began the day taking on the fourth-seeded and defending Big Ten Match Play Champion Ohio State Buckeyes. As a team, the Huskers started slow with junior Mark Foelbaek and sophomore Caleb Badura each leading their matches at the turn.
After being down by two, junior Tom Westenberger won four out of five holes to take the lead over Ohio State's Grant Engle. Westenberger would hold on to win the match 2-1.
Foelbaek and Badura would each hold on to their matches 4-2 and 3-1, respectively. This would leave the Huskers tied with the Buckeyes at three wins a piece. In his first competitive match since October of 2018, Daniel Pearson fell to Jackson Chandler 2-1, but after a scoring error, Pearson had to go back out on the golf course 20 minutes after he had finished the round to putt from 12 feet out to win the match. Pearson would make the putt to give Nebraska the win and advance them to the quarterfinals where they would face Michigan State.

The Big Ten has had some good WBB programs. Lately Maryland in particular has been the best Big Ten program. Iowa supplanted Maryland last year and made the Elite 8.
Iowa played well enough to win last night but Minnesota was pesky; it wasn't Kathleen Doyle's best game, yet she scored 16. She had little success shooting from the field, and more success driving, drawing fouls and going to the FT line. I project Iowa makes the Sweet 16 this season. Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men's gymnastics team provided Penn State with their first loss of the season after coming back from a seven-point deficit. The Huskers came from behind to take the lead heading into the final rotation and then finished with a season-high performance on high bar.
Nebraska defeated Penn State 406.950 to 403.200 to move to 7-2 (2-1 Big Ten) on the season. Penn State is now 10-1 (1-1 Big Ten).

Iowa is only 5-4, but has wins over #18 Arizona, #20 North Carolina, and #14 Duke. Also a loss to #8 NC State.

Nebraska now 2-7 on the year though. A few gagged defeats: one to Baylor and a blown 7-0 lead vs SD and a meltdown vs SDSU. ASU beat them like a drum the first two games.

Probably the one good thing about the wrestling tournament being cancelled Brands won't get another Title. Just something about him that bothers me. That said Iowa would have run away with the title this year unless there was a tremendous amount of upsets.

LINCOLN -- Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN) released its 2019-20 recruiting rankings on Wednesday morning and Nebraska's incoming class was ranked No. 2 nationally, trailing only that of Oklahoma State.
"The recruiting class assembled by coach Mark Manning helped Nebraska close the gap with [Oklahoma State] by completing banner senior seasons" the WIN news release reads. "Nebraska made it a photo finish at the end. Whether you lean toward No. 1 or No. 2, the Huskers head into the off-season with huge momentum after finishing second in the Big Ten Championships, the last collegiate competition of the past season."
Nebraska's class is comprised of four-time state champions Jeremiah Reno (125) of Missouri and Dominick Serrano (141) of Colorado (both of whom earned WIN's Wrestler of the Year honors in their respective states); two-time state champion Silas Allred (197) of Indiana (also a WIN Wrestler of the Year honoree in his home state); and Nathan Haas (184), whose senior season culminated in him winning his second California state title. Reno, Serrano and Allred all completed undefeated senior seasons before becoming Huskers.
The WIN recruiting rankings are "based primarily on two factors: the number of recruits outstanding enough to lead a serious bid for NCAA or All-American honors, and the class's overall performance during their senior high school seasons. Going back to the horse race between Oklahoma State and Nebraska, for example, both schools score well using both metrics, but Oklahoma State's strength is more heavily weighted toward the first, Nebraska's more heavily toward the second."

The Huskers swept the top three spots in PrepVolleyball.com's individual rankings list. Overall, Nebraska has five recruits in the top-16 of the rankings, and six in the top 70.
Kennedi Orr, a setter from Eagan, Minnesota, is currently ranked No. 1. Lindsay Krause, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Omaha Skutt, is ranked No. 2. Ally Batenhorst, a 6-4 outside hitter from Katy, Texas, is ranked No. 3.
Nebraska’s other committed players in the rankings are Lexi Rodriguez, a libero from Sterling, Illinois, at No. 10; outside hitter Whitney Lauenstein from Waverly at No. 16; and Rylee Gray, a 6-4 middle blocker from Elkhorn South, at No. 70.
While most of the Huskers’ 2021 class have been committed to Nebraska for several years, Lauenstein improved a lot during high school and got her scholarship offer from Nebraska during her junior season.

Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska Wrestling Head Coach Mark Manning announced the addition of Elise Brown Ton to the roster on Thursday.
"We're super excited to get a great young man like Elise," Manning said. "Elise had some other options, but he expressed interest in the culture and enthusiasm we have going on here in our program. He feels he will add to that culture and I'm confident he will do just that."
A native of Allen, Texas, Brown Ton is a two-time Texas state champion, capturing the UIL titles in 2019 and 2020. During his senior season, he capped a 42-2 season with the state crown at 160 pounds. As a junior, Brown Ton went 30-8 and won the state title at 152 pounds with a major decision in the finals. In 2018, Brown Ton placed second at the UIL state tournament at 145 pounds, finishing the season with a 31-9 record, which included winning the region and district titles.
Brown Ton captured the 170-pound Reno Tournament of Champions crown in 2019, pinning three of his six opponents in the process. He also took fourth place at the 2019 Cadet World Team Trials at 71 kg. In 2018, Brown Ton took runner-up honors at the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals.
Brown Ton also won three consecutive Texas-USA Wrestling State Championship titles in Freestyle and Greco-Roman. In 2019, he won the Junior Boys 160-pound division after capturing Cadet titles in 2017 and 2018.

Talk about having to become a tough guy: Try having the name Jamie Natalie, and being a male gymnast. He was one of my good friends at OSU, won NCAA's the went to Syndey Olympics.

And yeah, Cross Country stands out as a brutal spectator sport. What do you do, crowd the finish line and just wait for the end? Or stake out some random spot, so you can see who is in the lead?
Big Ten Golf might be a rough one to attend in person. It would be like attending a pga event, minus the libations and people watching. Do you pick a golfer to follow around the whole day? Or do you stake out a spot on a particular hole, and watch everyone take a hack at it?

Yeah, with stuff like Track & Field, Swimming & Diving, etc, you can at least see the entirety of the event in your field of vision.
You don't have to pick one specific part of the course to zero in on to the detriment of everything else that is going on, like cross country and golf.

I'd be lost at a lacrosse game/match/meet. I know it's a legitimate sport, but other than knowing that some spheroid needs to go into some sort of goal, I'd be clueless.
Heck, it's hard for me to follow a rugby match, and I went to several of them in which my oldest nephew played. Even the wives and friends of the players couldn't explain the rules.

Swimming is the worst. It is quite uncomfortable unless you're dressed appropriately. The ambient sound in those places is not pleasant. However, the pole vault is the single worst event. It lasts forever and there's so many misses one must sit through. I otherwise really enjoy T&F meets.

Lacrosse, Soccer, Ice Hockey and Field Hockey, etc are all games that are based upon a similar premise to one another. Start the action at midfield. Then the offense tries to put the ball in the goal, while the defense and the goalie try to prevent that from happening on their own end.
A familiarity with one of those four games should equip a fella with enough knowledge to kinda sorta follow the others, at least on a macro level.

In those games, it's what are and are not fouls, and what other things cause play stoppages, that can make them hard for the uninitiated to figure out.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Former Nebraska wrestling standout Jordan Burroughs defeated Zahid Valencia in the main event of FloWrestling's Burroughs vs. Valencia card on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Wrestling at 185 pounds, Burroughs overcame a four-point deficit in the second period to beat Valencia 8-5. Valencia, a two-time NCAA champion at Arizona State, was first on the board, scoring two takedowns in the first period and entered the break with a 4-0 lead. Burroughs answered in the second period, scoring a takedown twenty seconds in to cut Valencia's lead in half. Valencia earned a step out point to bring his advantage to three points, but that was not enough to stop the Olympic and World champion's comeback. Burroughs went on to score two more takedowns and two step out points to secure the victory.
Also picking up a win in the event was Nebraska three-time All-American and second-year volunteer assistant coach Tyler Berger. He met Ohio State's Sammy Sasso in the third match of the undercard, earning an 8-2 victory. Berger controlled the first period, scoring two takedowns for a 4-0 lead at the break. He gave up just one takedown to Sasso in the second period but responded with two more of his own to take the match.
