Title: when will your season be 'over the hump'?
Post by: Drew4UTk on August 05, 2019, 05:36:47 PM
some season's are spread out from beginning to end in pitfalls- every week a trap.  Some have their work up front, and some have their work on the backstretch.  Atop this, there is always and forever the 'gelling' period where things really start to click- most call it reaching 'mid season form'.  Often, the construction of the season (schedule) helps with that by forcing teams to execute simple plays and sets offensively, and defensively often play a bit aggressive in effort to both disrupt an offense that is also trying to gel as well as simply trying to 'control' what they can as anticipating plays is trickier early on.

With Tennessee I'm thinking the Mississippi State game is when we'll truly know what kind of team they have... They'll, at best, split UF or UGA but will most likely be two stacked in the loss column at that point. Chattanooga and Georgia State should be wins.  BYU should likely be a full third advantage UT, but.... who knows.  So- somewhere around 3/2 or 2/3 by the time MSU comes to town.  MSU will be the point the team has an identity.... so, MSU is the hump game.  it just so happens it's also the sixth.

my opinion of UGA, for instance, is they are a supremely rounded and fundamental team- they don't need a lot of room to 'gel'.  We'll know what they're all about after their second game and how they leave South Bend.

UF might be as deep as Kentucky or Tennessee before they can be pegged.

USCjr tags into Mack Brown's UNC right offf the bat- which is fortunate for them early in the season with a first year coach we know is pretty dang good at his job... they also play both Bama and Mizzou before September ends... we'll know what they're about likely right after Bama.

anyway.... your team?

The Hump is beating Alabama, so early December for UGA.

If they get their shot.  UGA plays ND in Athens, they already played them in South Bend in 2017.  And they face Vandy and two cream puffs before Notre Dame on 9/21.

South Carolina, Missouri, Texas A&M, and Kentucky are in Athens also.  Auburn is on the road.

They have now lost 3 five stars players from their Number One recruiting class.

They sure do play at home.... I got twisted there which is all too common. ND is a pretty good team and should test your fellas.

They did last time, but it also was Jake Fromm's first start as a true freshman.  He's a bit more experienced now.

Chaney is about one cheeseburger away from a heart attack but if he survives it will be who he picks for his QB for the offense he runs.

IMO we are still weak in certain key positions. Not to call out any player but we will be over the hump when and only when we get top quality players in those key play making positions.

Best case scenario IMO we split the four games with Fla- L, Ga - W, Bama- L and MSU- W, worst case lose all four then pray we can win out which is unlikely.

Not being negative just facing the reality of how hard it is to rebuild a program like ours which was allowed to sink into oblivion.

For Florida, it may just be one game.  Miami.
If we lose to them, pffftt....we're an 8-4/7-5 type team at best.

If Florida beats Miami comfortably, I'll be confident in a 10-2/9-3 season.

Of course, the argument could be made that Florida could start out 5-0 and we wouldn't know much about them.

I'd say if Florida beats Miami in a close game, it is not a good sign for them.  Of course, the OL might well gel over the course of the season and the Gators could be quite solid by November.  I agree 5-0 is very possible even with a struggling team, but there would be signs, close wins, etc.

Auburn could be tough of course, @LSU, @USCe could be dicey, UGA, @Mizzou could be as well, and FSU could be substantially improved, they have some talent.

pre-saban, for bama it was always arkansas. beat them in game 3/4, it was very likely a 10+ win season. lose, and it's 6-8 win season.

saban era, it's been lsu game where we know what's gonna happen. beat lsu, likely an 11+ win season with a seccg birth and bcs/cfp game. lose to them, probably lose to au as well, miss seccg, and get a decent, not great bowl. could also argue the iron bowl for here as well.

Tennessee SHOULD be able to get to 6-8 wins this year.
OOC schedule is less than daunting. BYU, Chattanooga, Ga St and UAB should be definite wins.
if Tennessee doesn't beat BYU it's going to be another long year.

Tennessee should roll into Gainsville 3-0.
i would argue week 4 is the hump game. Beat UF and Vols are going to have some swag back.
lose that one and it could be a 5 game losing streak going into UAB and they'll be fighting like hell for a bowl birth again.  Will Pruitt be able to keep the team from quitting on him if a skid like that happens?

From what drama ive been told about that team when he got there, they were a bunch of prima donnas and all about "self".  Hes been trying to change that and get rid of those practicing it... Its not jist the coach and schemes at UT, its what the culture had become. Hes got quite a job to pull off.

What I saw of the "culture" at UT under Butch was horrible, really really bad.

Pruitt will fix that largely but it may take another year.

Honestly, and not to be harsh, UT found the most savage ways to lose games the past 5-6 years.  Like full-on, that's F-ed up ways to lose.  I don't know how the fans stay loyal during all that and there's a 100% chance some players are going to check out.  They didn't run through the T to get clowned on in new, innovated ways over and over again.

Anytime any program resembles a dumpster fire tumbling downhill into a shitstorm, there's going to be dissonance.

I would go with 7-5 for the Vols.  They could end up 8-5 and "on a roll" of sorts having edged Minnesota in the Underpants Bowl.

The answer is always the Iron Bowl, yeah?

Maybe, but this year's Auburn team, for me, will hit the hump 4 weeks in with aTm. I think this tale's expectations will be told by that game's end.

For A&M, it's the 'Bama game.  We will have faced Clemson, Arkansas, and Auburn along with two Little Sisters teams.  I expect we have a small chance of beating Clemson and even odds beating Auburn.  I'll go out on a limb and say that we should beat Arkansas.  So A&M should be 4-1 and somewhere near the top ten assuming we can beat Auburn.  I'm not saying that we beat Bama, far from it, but after the Bama game we'll know all we need to know about this team and it's character.  Sure, later on we face UGa and LSU which will also be tough games but we'll know if we're a contender after 'Bama.

I'm thinking 8 wins on the bottom side, and 10 on the top side.  Sure would be nice to beat any of Clemson, Bama, or LSU this year but not a deal breaker.

From what I saw today they won't get out the valley much less over the hump.

Either we have a bunch of no talent people who can't coach or a bunch of no talent players who aren't coachable, maybe both.

The worst display of anything resembling football I've ever seen at Tennessee.

A lot of people are suggesting the team has already quit on Pruitt, but I'm wondering if it's just awful line play.  As a WR, are you going to run every route 100% if it's more than likely, based on your experience, that the OL is going to flub the play up?  Also, if you're a LB, and yet again, the ball-carrier has a freed up blocker in your way, are you confident in doing whatever it takes to make that tackle?

Poor line play can retard an entire team.  It doesn't mean the team has quit on the HC.  I don't know which is the case in Knox-Vegas, but it's an idea.

The apparent lack of enthusiasm was "apparent" on TV.  Apathy kills a team.  I'd be thinking about playing the youngsters and benching any senior not committed to playing hard no matter what.

How many 3 stars would Ga State have on the field?  Not many.  At all.  The talent gap SHOULD be sufficient to win that game ugly if needed.  It wasn't.

I'm taking my daughter and son-in-law ( who are both Mississippi State grads) and grandkids to the Ms State game.
Your comment regarding the Ms Game being the "hump game " of the season is interesting.
Glad we're going in seperate cars as the trip home could be a very long one for someone.

I still think this Saturday goes a long way towards Auburn's endgame. In effect, being in a huge, rowdy road conference test makes for another newbie game for Nix. How he handles it could make or break the year for Gus.

I expect aTm to be all over AU in the 1Q. If the Tigers can get into the half within 10 points, I like their chances late.

Doubtful to my mind that AU can impose the run game consistently on the Aggies so, they'll need WR Seth Williams to be back and in top form--or, flex out more formations to open up lanes.

With AU's poor punt coverage, ST might swing it at any time.

Only thing I'm sure of is it'll be physical.
