Title: B1G - SEC Parallels Team by Team
Post by: Cincydawg on July 19, 2019, 01:11:02 PM
Kind of artificial, but a bit funny or ironic or whatever:

Alabama - Ohio State - Kings until someone else says otherwise

Georgia - Michigan - Almost doesn't cut it, both lost last two games last year (UGA at least kept it close).  Time.

Wisconsin - LSU - Both do their thing and seem to come up short while having solid seasons.

MSU-MSU - Solid defense, not quite the talent level

Florida - Nebraska - Might be up and comers shot at winning their divisions.

UK - NW - Usually mediocre or worse but solid years in 2018

USCe- Iowa - Both can be tough outs at times, especially when they are at home.

Ole Miss - Minnesota - Past glories are long past.

Missouri - Purdue - Some good coaching at both I think.

Tennessee - Penn State - Might be headed in different directions, storied programs

Texas A&M - Maryland - Might be pretty decent this year but tough slates

Arkansas - Rutgers - Well at least we're not .... oh wait.

Auburn - Illinois - Not everything makes sense

Vandy - Indiana - Make the occasional bowl game

If PSU were also 2-6 spots higher, that'd be an acceptable Big Ten power ranking.

I'd flip Rutgers and Indiana.  Vandy and Rutgers have had just about equivalent periods of success.

think i'd swap uf and tenn (or neb/psu).

tenn and neb both have longer, earlier histories while being in a slump in recent decade+.

while psu and uf had some really good seasons in their history, they weren't major players until about the 80's and then they dominated the 90's. they both have legendary coaches with strong ties to the schools lead them to glory years. and while they're not what they once were under those coaches, they're still contenders more often than not.

also i think i'd pair au with iowa or msu.

msu for the obvious good team in a state with a blue blood.
but i think iowa matches better. play style, home atmosphere, similar national/conf titles, etc.

My ordering is not meant to imply quality necessarily, it's how they popped into my head.

The lower teams are harder to compare usually.

Vandy     6-7  5-7  6-7   4-8  3-9  9-4  9-4
Rutgers 1-11  4-8  2-10 4-8  8-5  6-7  9-4

Rutgers has had a better record once in 7 years.

I know. I thought it was a cool coincidence.

LSU/UW is a solid pairing, I think. UW/Auburn would be too. Maybe Georgia even.

Unlike UW and Georgia, LSU and Auburn have recently gotten over the hump.

Definately Northwestern and Vandy.

SEC East went 9-5 vs the SEC West last year.

This makes me want to a mashup of ranking the B10 and SEC programs into one list.  That might get too dramatic, though.

1-14: The SEC, 15-28: The Big Ten?

You know what would be fun?  If we took turns ranking each position.  Maybe I'd start with Alabama at #1 and Brutus puts the next program at #2, then ELA decides who the third one is, and so on.  That might get interesting.

I do think the top 3 are pretty set, though.

Bama-Ohio St-  Agree. Kings of the Hill

Georgia-Michigan- Agree.  Great history. Lots of wins.  Not a lot of championships in the AP era though.

Penn St-Florida-  Both had fallen off.  Both seem to be coming back though.

MSU-Auburn- Better history than most schools in the country but second fiddle in their own states.

Nebraska-Tennessee-  Neither are what they used to be.

Wisconsin-LSU- Tough nosed grind it out football teams.  Sometimes unappreciated because of others in their conference.

Missouri-Maryland-  Misfits.  Still identified largely with their former leagues.

A&M-Iowa-  Good solid programs historically but always in the shadow of other schools.

Minnesota-Ole Miss-  Gotta be pretty old to remember their prime.

Kentucky-Indiana- Historically get their revenge during basketball season.

Rutgers-South Carolina-  Neither joined these conferences based on the merit of past accomplishments.

Purdue-Miss St-  Will give the big boys a scare but get lost among all the giants.

Illinois-Arkansas-  Have had moments in the sun but you kinda forget they are in the league sometimes now.

Northwestern-Vandy-  The SAT champs of their respective leagues.

Kris has some nice pairings - I like, better than mine.  I was just musing as usual.

I don't think this could be done with other conferences, perhaps the Pac and the Big 12.  The ACC has such a dominating team right now and a bunch of others it's impossible.

The second best team in the ACC is almost irrelevant.

I'd probably put Maryland with SC.

The parallels are quite astonishing (at least for me personally) from leaving a conference, to recruitment, to having coaches with the same name throughout the year.
