Title: Weird Possibilities this Season
Post by: Cincydawg on July 01, 2019, 06:35:06 AM
Missouri gets it together and runs off 8 straight and then upsets UGA in Athens, loses to Florida the next week, but wins out.

Florida ends up losing to LSU and UGA, and UGA is a nice 11-1 but Mizzou goes to ATL.  And gets beat.

Florida beats Miami soundly to kick off the season and then rolls on until the game at LSU which slips away, but then they beat UGA and Missou to win out.

Of course, the most unusual is if UGA beats Missouri, Missouri beats Florida, and Florida beats UGA, and all are 7-1 in conference.

I don't see much hope for A&M to win the West, the schedule is just wicked.  But they could of course surprise and upset folks and turn out better than expected.  Second year coaches can do that.  Perhaps they can manage 7-1 in conference beating LSU AND Alabama and losing only to UGA.  They would be in Atlanta even if they lose to Clemson obviously.

A 3 way tie for them with LSU and Bama seems unlikely.  But this thread is about the unlikely.

Florida plays like crap against Mizzou, every time.

I can't see even a weird shot for USCe, Tenn, UK, or Vandy, so I didn't include them.  Missouri still has a bowl ban, I don't know if that knocks them out of the CG or not.  Miss State might make some noise and Auburn as well.  A&M might end up being the best 7-5 team in the country.

MO is not eligible for the SECCG.

I think they are appealing so that could change.  Odd to me that Bryant would have gone there.

Bowl means nothing to him. Would not play in it even if they win the appeal.

Maybe so, if he is really that good.  He was beat out by a true Freshman obviously.

Here's what Pete Fiutak of CFN has to say about that.

"Kelly Bryant really is that good. The Clemson transfer’s only sin was not being Trevor Lawrence, but he’s a versatile passer and natural leader who’s been able to step in and take to his new program right away."

So, in the west, possibles would seem to be Bama LSU Auburn MSU.  Odds of anyone else are tiny.

In the east, UGA UF .... (MO is out)...  Tennessee???

UT is a 7-5/8-4 team this season and it should be the first bowl all but a few on the team have seen.

that said, they will both upset someone they have no business upsetting, and... i fear they'll drop a game they're favored... likely UK, Vandy, or perhaps USCe or Mizzou, who i believe to be more evenly matched to UT than a lot of folks will admit so IF UT is favored it likely won't be by much- so... not so much of an upset to drop???  ... As i've said on the UT team board, I'm thinking the MSU game is the game we'll know what UT is about, and where they're headed under Pruitt and Chaney.

The Vols should have four OOC wins if they are even half decent, perhaps UAB and BYU could be tests.  USCe and Vandy ate at home, so that might be 6 wins, @ Mizzou sounds like a challenge.  UK away should be doable.

Away games at Florida and Bama don't sound like upset possibilities to me.  UGA and MSU at home could be a W, though UGA is returning a lot of experience on offense.

I'd say 4 wins is the lower possible result imaginable, and 9 on the high side.

i don't see msu with much of a shot. they lost a ton on the d side fo ball to nfl, and they aren't typically ones to replace talent like that. plus, even with that talent, they were 8-5 (4-4). i don't see them improving on that enough to make seccg.

I agree, trying to include anyone with a slight glimmer.  I'd guess it's really Bama and LSU.  I should have included A&M instead of MSU, but the A&M schedule is intense.

If A&M wins the SEC this year, they will have earned it.

I have aTm at 5-3 and MSU at 4-4 with aTm winning HTH at home. Have both 8-4 overall.

If A&M goes 8-4, they will be the best 8-4 team in the country.  I concur that looks about right.  Most of the time we can predict where teams will end the season within a game I think.  On occasion someone like UK last year does 2-3 games better than expected.  That occasion may be nearly every year.  It's tough to predict for obvious reasons.

My Dawgs still have that propensity to play really poorly in at least one game (LSU last season).

I don't know what happened yesterday beyond the score, but I presume Mizzou is "out" as a threat.  Bryant had 443 yards passing at least.

We might have learned something a lot earlier than expected.

One very strange possibility is that Jalen Hurts, Jacob Eason, and Justin Fields...one transfer from Alabama and two transfers from Georgia...might end up going 1-2-3 (you pick the order) in the Heisman race this year.  Probably not, but so far they all three look awfully good.
