Some kicker from WVU. Louisville had a #100 once too.

I think the #100 WVU kicker was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of college football in 1969. I thought I read once where several teams did something special for that in ‘69.

I think the #100 WVU kicker was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of college football in 1969. I thought I read once where several teams did something special for that in ‘69.
What I recall reading was that WVU used helmet numbers at the time, and got permission that year to have every player put a 100 on their helmet, but just the kicker got to use it as a jersey number.
Interestingly, that would make this 150, and I've heard nothing about them doing anything. MLB made a big deal that same year (1969) about 100 years, although that was more of a marketing ploy after decreasing attendance numbers, in conjunction with lowering the mound to increase offense. They basically picked a year a barnstorming team in Cincinnati, that sort of became the Reds, started playing. But again, nothing for 150.
The NFL was celebrating 50 years that same year, and seemed to have a patch, and name an all time team, but that was it. But oh boy, they are making a big deal of 100. I also recall 75 being a big deal for them. That was the first time I remember teams specifically wearing throwback jerseys.

I think Kansas had one too.
This was sort of a thing for the 1969 season, when some teams wanted to honor the 100th anniversary of CFB by selecting one player to wear the number "100" for that season only. Most other schools had "100" decals for their helmets.
-
https://uni-watch.com/2016/02/18/a-brief-history-of-college-football-players-wearing-uniform-no-100/ (https://uni-watch.com/2016/02/18/a-brief-history-of-college-football-players-wearing-uniform-no-100/)
Up until now, I was aware of only one college football player who wore a triple-digit number. That would be West Virginia punter/kicker Chuck Kinder (shown above), who wore No. 100 in 1963. That was the year that all WVU players wore “100” on their helmets to commemorate the state’s centennial, but only Kinder had permission to wear the number on his jersey.
But it turns out at least two other college gridders have worn No. 100. You can see one of them in these photos of a Louisville/Memphis State game from 1969 (the team in white is Louisville).

My rental car in France, it was an upgrade.
I rented a Lamborghini in Paris once for an hr. I think it was like 89 euro a half hr or you can pay 160 euro for the hr. They also have multi hr rentals if you negotiate a price. They don’t really have any set prices for that. It was a long time ago and I just remember some Arab dudes running it and trying hard to get me to rent the car and throwing out numbers saying I can even rent for a day or week, but I think it was 1200 euro for a day or 4000 for the wk. They also had some Ferrari’s as well. Most of the cars were a couple years old but not that old- maybe 2-3 yrs behind the current models.
I just did it for an hr, and it was OK. Kinda lame cause they ride with you on the short trips and you can’t really drive that fast in the city bc it’s massive and there’s tons of traffic. I hit it pretty good going in a tunnel and the guy that comes with you to make sure you don’t wreck the car freaked out and made me slow down.
Not a a bad experience at all, just wish I’d have gotten to go alone and really test the car out.

I've driven a Ferraro Scuderia on a race track and a Cadillac CTS-V on a track in Austin (an F-1 track). The latter was more thrilling, int part because the track is a lot longer than the one in Vegas where I drove five laps. The CTS-V makes nice noises when floored.
I think I posted the car thing on the wrong thread, sorry.
A nice way to see Paris is to rent a driver in a Mercedes, I think it's about 500 Euros a day. You don't have to worry about parking. I actually don't like being in Paris much. We were there for a day last trip, had a driver so I could relax in the car, wasn't thrilled about anything. The ladies wanted to shop and have lunch, which is where the caviar came into play.

Richard Rifenburg, 1948 All-American
Rifenberg and teammate Len Ford (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Len_Ford) had the reputation as the team practical jokers. During the 1947 game against Wisconsin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin_Badgers_football), Rifenburg started calling signals for the Badgers. Wisconsin's offense protested to officials, who "prowled the Wolverines secondary but never caught their man." Rifenburg continued to scramble Badger signals, as Rifenburg's teammates laughed at his scheme.

My friend played against McDougle in HS down in south FL.
I wore #78 in HS, so I love that number. I played left tackle, starting my SR season. As a JR, i was the backup at both G and T positions, as we had 5 SR starters along the OL. 5A in FL was no joke, although the really rural schools usually only had 1-2 guys you had to focus on.
Bruce Smith also wore 78.

There's an interesting timeline of dominant interior D-linemen.
The best guy since Suh was probably Aaron Donald.
So Donald, Suh, LSU's Glenn Dorsey before him, maybe Tommie Harris at OU,...I'd have to look at annual All-American teams, but certainly Warren Sapp...Emtman before him, Casillas before then, Selmon (pick your Selmon), going back to Glover.
Maybe big John Henderson of Tennessee belongs in there between Harris and Sapp.
Anyway, point is, DEs have all that space with which to work. For DTs and NTs, with traffic and all hell breaking loose on either side of you, to still dominate and wreak havoc...it's special.
There were guys like Vince Wilfork (Miami) and Terrence Cody (Alabama) that ate up 2 blockers and wanted dessert, but they didn't screw up the entire play by finding themselves 3 yards deep in the offensive backfield on the snap. Those are the special ones.

I posted a 73 who happened to have his twin brother 74 in the picture on the 20th.
Oops! I didn't realize that the date had changed since the 73s started being posted.
I'll go ahead and post a 72.

Damn. Only 68 more days of "summer" to go.
It would be nice if it got started.
-
It's pretty much summer down heah, which is no surprise. We had a pretty heavy storm yesterday that knocked out power for an hour of so. The building has a backup generator for critical items fortunately. We lose power fairly often here it seems, but it comes back on usually in a few, we lost it again around 9 PM but it was back on in 5.
I have a battery backup to keep the computer happy.
Highs here are 88°-90°F all week. Paris is in for some real heat though, and they often lack AC in the apartment buildings.
Our first house in ATL in 1964 was newly built and had no AC.

Looks like this past weekend got it going. Finally got plenty of sun, even if temps only in the 70s, then hitting the upper 80s all week this week here.

Don Key was a three-year starter for the Sooners, an All-Big 8 guard and potential All-American until cancer surgery ended his football career in 1981. Barry Switzer established the Don Key Award in 1982.
Oklahoma coaches describe the award as the highest honor an OU football player can receive while playing for the Sooners. It goes to the player who best exemplifies the many superior qualities of Key, both on the field and in the classroom.

Billy Tubbs played center, linebacker, and fullback. He played on teams that went 31-0 and won 2 MNCs. In 1956, he was unanimous All-America center, and finished 4th in the 1956 Heisman Trophy voting, behind winner Paul Hornung of Notre Dame, Johnny Majors of Tennesse, and Tommy McDonald, also of Oklahoma.

Jim Littrell, fullback, 1973-75. That's classic wishbone. Littrell is the first option. Behind him, to our left, is #5, QB Steve Davis, and further back and to the left is #24, LHB Joe Washington. The RHB, the lead blocker on the option-right play, probably Horace Ivory but possibly freshman Billy Sims, is out of the picture to the left. In the foreground is All-America SE Billy Brooks, who got to block a lot more than he got to catch passes.
That's the 1975 Oregon game, which OU won 62-7 enroute to the MNC.

Couldn't remove it and don't feel like digging for another photo.Howard "Hopalong" Cassady - 1955 Heisman Winner
-
Oh, I know who he is.............
this from the Husker archives.............
One week after a dreary 6-0 season-opening home loss to Hawaii, the Huskers took to the road and forced the defending AP national champion Ohio State Buckeyes to twice come from behind before the Buckeyes pulled out a 28-20 victory.
Howard "Hopalong" Cassady, who would go on to win the 1955 Heisman Trophy, rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Buckeyes' ground-based attack.
After the Buckeyes drove 57 yards for the game's opening score, the Huskers scored twice to take a 13-7 lead. First came a 62-yard drive capped by quarterback Don Erway's 9-yard TD run. And then came the game's most sensational play: With the Buckeyes driving at the Nebraska 9, fullback John Edwards picked off an OSU option pitchout and raced untouched into the Ohio State end zone.
Ohio State answered with a 51-yard TD drive, and the Buckeyes led 14-13 at halftime.
The Huskers regained the lead in the third quarter on a 69-yard drive. Erway passed 11 yards to Jon Williams for the touchdown, making it Nebraska 20, Ohio State 14.
But the Buckeyes answered with a 63-yard drive, and Fred Kriss' extra point put OSU back in the lead for good. Then Cassady set up one more Ohio State touchdown with a 43-yard dash to the Nebraska 2.
A late Nebraska bid to tie the game was thwarted when OSU halfback Jim Roseboro intercepted an Erway pass at the Buckeyes' 10-yard line in the final minutes.
Earlier in the game, the Huskers squandered an opportunity when a 64-yard march died inside the OSU 1-yard line. Nebraska punted only once but turned the ball over four times.
Ohio State tried only three passes all game long and held a commanding 321-138 advantage in rushing yardage. But Nebraska's passing game allowed the Huskers to pull nearly even with the Buckeyes in total yardage, 338-327.

Per the Font of All Wisdom and Knowledge:
Prentice Gautt (February 8, 1938 – March 17, 2005) was an American football running back for the University of Oklahoma football team from 1956 to 1959. Gautt was the first black football player at the University of Oklahoma where he wore #38.
When former Sooners coach Bud Wilkinson was pressured against giving Gautt a scholarship, a group of black doctors and pharmacists gave him money to attend the school. Within a year, Gautt had a scholarship and the donated money was given to another black student. Gautt then became a two-time All-Big Eight player and the 1959 Orange Bowl MVP. His senior year, he was named to the Academic All-American team.
He played football professionally in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns (one year) and St. Louis Cardinals (six years).
After the NFL, Gautt coached football at Missouri while earning his Ph.D. in psychology. He then started a career in athletics administration, first as an assistant commissioner for the Big Eight Conference and as a special assistant to the commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.
Gautt played high school football at Douglass High School in Oklahoma City. His senior year, he became the first black to play in the All-State game and he earned MVP honors.
Gautt died on March 17, 2005 from flu-like symptoms.
He was posthumously given the 2005 Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award by The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Football Hall of Fame in May 2005.

I have no issue wishing away winter to get to baseball, but I can't wish away summer to get to football. I just view it as a win-win. It's going to be really nice, every day, then eventually there will also be football.
Besides, I think Florida and Miami kick off in about 4 hours at this point
-
The one think I am quite envious of Michigan of, is their extensive online archive through fans, both of video and football. MSU's is garbage. A late 80s All-American and the only photo I can find of him is a group shot, where he's in the back?
Granted he was an even better baseball player, and wore the same number. Turned down the Mets to return for his senior Rose Bowl winning season, which probably forever derailed his baseball career. Peaked in AA in the Tigers' system

Ron Rubick.
Set the school record (at the time) for rushing yards in a game, in 1962, as the backup tailback, tallying 207 yards on just 14 carries. Became much better known as a legendary high school football coach in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, winning 3 state championships in the 80s, twice being named Wisconsin AP Coach of the Year, and a streak of 48 consecutive wins from 1983-1987 that remains the state record.

I hope Ohio State and Michigan never change their basic color schemes. When we played Michigan in the '75 (season) Orange Bowl, they were wearing white pants. That was a bummer.
-
Since Harbaugh returned they have been wearing white pants away - quite a bit.And the Buckeyes have been wearing Alternative Threads quite a bit - which IMO should be stopped. The Traditional threads are just fine :96:
-
I don't get the white pants/white jersey look when the team colors are maize and blue. Yellow/gold/maize pants look better with white jerseys than they do with dark ones, I think.
I do not like the alternate unis, which exist so that Nike, et. al., can sell more paraphernalia.

His name never comes up in the "could have gone straight to the pros, physically" discussion, but Jamal Lewis could have. Rickey Dixon played in the 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1988 Orange Bowls, in two National Championship games, and was a key figure in Oklahoma's 1985 National Championship win over Penn State in the 1986 Orange Bowl.
A consensus All-American in 1987, Dixon was the first Sooner to win the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the top defensive back in the country. He shared the Award with Miami's Bennie Blades. He won all-conference honors in 1986 and 1987.
The defining game of Dixon's collegiate career was the 1987 contest against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Hyped as the "Game of the Century II", playing on the moniker given the 1971 contest between Oklahoma and Nebraska, Nebraska was favored at home in Lincoln, boasting the #1 offense in the country.
The Sooners came in ranked #2 in the nation, and sporting the #1 defense in the country. Nebraska quarterback Steve Taylor came into the game boasting that the Sooners could not compete against the Cornhuskers. It was Dixon's two interceptions of Taylor in the game (one to set up a short touchdown drive, and one late in the fourth quarter to seal the win) that put the Cornhuskers away and guaranteed Oklahoma a shot at the Miami Hurricanes in the 1988 Orange Bowl. In the Orange Bowl, Dixon had another key interception to set up a Sooner touchdown drive in a game that Miami eventually won, 20-14.
Dixon finished his career with 170 total tackles and 17 interceptions (second only to Darrell Royal for the school record). During his senior year, he had nine interceptions for 232 yards which remain school records for the Sooners.
Dixon was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 2014. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2019.

Tommy McDonald, two-time All-American, 1956 Maxwell Award-winner, battles a team that might look like the Cleveland Browns, but is actually the Texas Longhorns, probably in 1956. He played in 31 games (1954-56) of the 47-game winning streak. He would go on to be a 6-time Pro-Bowler (as a WR) for the Philadelphia Eagles, and is enshrined in both the CFB and the NFL Halls of Fame.

Probably the most beloved Muslim in Catholicism.
For all of his greatness, he scored just 15 career TDs. 5 rush, 4 rec, 6 returns.
I've watched a lot of his plays and he fell down after catching the ball A LOT. He should have had a good number of additional receiving TDs.
I have yet to see a more clutch play than his punt return TD for naught vs CU in the Orange Bowl late.
With his rushing/receiving usage, Percy Harvin is a good recent comp. But few returned kicks like Ismail...just the threat of him altered things.

That was pretty common at non rivalry games prior to Don Canham being hired as AD in 1968. Fans could move around so the end zones were pretty empty. They used to be able to carry kegs of beer into games.

Utah State?
The 1974 Utah State Aggies football team was an American football team that represented Utah State University as an independent during the 1974 NCAA Division I football season. In their second season under head coach Phil Krueger, the Aggies compiled an 8–3 record, but were outscored by opponents by a total of 199 to 181 – principally due to a 72–3 loss to 1974 national champion Oklahoma.
the other 2 losses were to Southern Miss and San Diego St.
-
Utah State?
Oh, that cupcake! ;)
OU's schedules back then had seven conference games, the OOC game vs. Texas in Dallas, and generally had two one-and-done home games and a home-and-home series with a major college opponent, or maybe two. USC was the major college opponent in '71 and '73. In '71, the other two games were one-and-done hosting SMU, at Pitt, and hosting USC. In '72, it was just the three hired visitors--Utah State, Oregon, and Clemson. In '73, it was Baylor as the hired chump, part two of the home-and-home vs. USC, and part one of a home-and-home vs. Miami (which wasn't very good at the time).
So 1972--for reasons I do not know--had a one-and-done-heavy OOC schedule and, yes, Utah State was a cupcake. But, as Fearless pointed out, a cupcake that ended up 8-3.

He wasn't a name to the general fans, while Williams was CADILLAC. He was THE dude.
I remember the situation because Williams got hurt vs Florida, and Brown came in and ran all over us in like 2.5 quarters.
Checking on it - this is why I posted what I did - Brown had only 2 carries the previous 2 games before the Florida game. He wasn't a thing until Williams got hurt.

Royal as a Sooner? He was a great Sooner player, and still holds the school record for career interceptions (18). He was a great punter and punt returner. He also QB'd the 1949 11-0 Sooners who beat LSU in the Sugar Bowl 35-0. Some observers claim that the '49 team was the best Sooner squad ever.
Or the pic looking a bit like a cartoon because it's been retouched?
I got that from a website that had a bunch of old photos of OU football from the Daily Oklahoman. One from the 1946 (season) Gator Bowl vs. NC State looked like it was a black-and-white page from a coloring book.

Desmond had the better career. "Tim" had arguably the greatest single game for his position in Michigan's history. Makes me wonder what the national record is -- altogether, versus a P5 team, and then ... versus a #2 team.
313 yards may not be the national record for all of those, but I bet it is versus a Top 5 team and is an eye-popper all around.

Nah, he was just smart enough to realize that OU sucks and got as far away as he could.
Worked out pretty well for the three-time Superbowl champ, Superbowl MVP, and Hall of Fame member.

Hah!
All that stuff was after college, and there's not a provable cause-and-effect between Troy leaving OU and winning Super Bowls with Dallas.
OTOH, Jamelle Holieway led the Sooners to the 1985 MNC after Aikman was injured.
We'll never know if they would have accomplished that with Troy still at QB.
Personally, I think it worked out well for both parties. Aikman flourished in a more passing-oriented offense at UCLA and OU got back to basics with the wishbone, going 33-3 from '85 through '87.
EDIT: Oh, yeah. Texas blows. That is all.

Yeah, I laughed when I heard they were doing that also. The players want to do it again against Notre Dame this time, we'll see.
I don't know what it is about changing jerseys though. I was present at the blackout game with Alabama in Athens and the halt time score was 31-0, the wrong way.

Huskers have a long horrible history of changing up Unis for big games vs the Sooners (all Red), Badgers, (all white) and others and then playing like another team

Jimmy Raye. 1966
He was the less heralded member of Duffy's class where he brought up black players from the segregated south. But that'll happen when you have 3 HOFers in Bubba Smith, George Webster and Gene Washington alongside you. He was the starting QB on the 1966 10-10 tie with Notre Dame team. Went on to coach for like 40 years in the NFL, including 19 as an OC, most recently with the 49ers in 2010, before finally retiring with the Buccaneers after 2013.

Lynn Chandois, arguably MSU's first superstar. I think still holds the school's career interceptions record. Won NFL MVP later with the Steelers, back when the Steelers sucked, so I'd guess he may have been the Steelers' first superstar too, albeit two decades before they became a good franchise.

I guess Fearless really likes the #10...
-
I think #10 is going to have a huge season upcoming
that would be current #10 JD
If not he's going to eat up plenty of double teams
possibly breaking every Husker single season receiving record
-
We don't have a #10 this year, apparently.
But I'm hopeful that our current #11 has a great year.
-
many "experts" expect Sam to have a great year
good luck to that young man, he seems to be the right type of guy
-
here's Art Schlichter . . . .
I had a lieutenant working for me in the mid-80s whose dad was part of the FBI team that busted Art for gambling.
-
Does anyone have a link to the old thread about which was the greatest player at #10?

Checking The Helmet Project (http://www.nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/index.htm), they were silver from at least 1960 through 1963.

Blake Bell, not a great QB, led OU to victory over Notre Dame, breaking a frustrating losing streak to the Irish.
He would later be used like a fullback carrying the ball in the "Belldozer" formation. Later still as a TE.

As OU and Michigan have only played one game against each other in all of recorded history, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that that is the 1975 (season) Orange Bowl, which OU won 14-6, and which, due to upsets earlier in the day, clinched the MNC for the Sooners.

Say what you want about him, averaging 8.7 yards per carry on 200 carries in 2005 was ballistic. However, those extra carries may have been why he went from a great kick returner and punt returner to a bad KR and an ordinary PR that season.

Brett Favre
Sigh. So I look up "best player to wear so-and-so number" for this sometimes, and of course, they all have Favre for #4. In college football history. A QB at a mid-major who wasn't an All-American, didn't win any awards, and had very pedestrian stats. People can't freaking separate the NFL career from the college career, and they should be embarrassed.
I'd be willing to bet there were 50+ players who wore #4 with better college careers than Favre. Hell, I'd even say over half the P5 programs' best #4 had a better career than Favre did.

Thank you for putting the year of the season. I hate when they call it the next year's bowl name, which is standard practice.
It's especially fun with a bowl that hopped its date around, like the Gator Bowl - between Jan 1 and Dec 30 or 31. So for at least a season or two, there's 2 Gator Bowls in the same year.
-

I was thinking with all the passing, OU may be breaking the all-time receiving history books. But looking at just the P5 career passing yardage leaders:
1. Broyles, OU
2. Washington, OKST
3. Woods, OKST
4. Wright, BAY
5. Walters, STAN
6. Hagan, ASU
7. Hass, ORST
8. Williams, TEX
9. Greene, FSU
10. Standeford, PUR
So I was wrong about OU career receivers. Okie State is represented well. But mostly what I draw from this is that the career receiving leaderboard is so full of non-P5 guys, that guys like Troy Walters, Roy Williams, and Rashad Greene may be underrated. Hell, considering how big and fast he was, I thought of Williams as having had an underwhelming career, but that is incorrect.

Lol. Kevin Faulk. I can’t think of him without thinking of NCAA Football ‘98 for the PlayStation. I was in college and me and my buddies had a season going. We all liked WVU so the rule was no one be WVU. So, I was Syracuse because they had McNabb and I liked to scramble around. One dude was BYU because he liked throwing it all the time. And the other one was LSU with Kevin Faulk. He ended up winning the NC and Faulk won the Heisman with something like over 2500 yards rushing. When I hear Faulk’s name that game is still the first thing I think of.
-
I know I've posted this before, but Frank Solich's first game was a 'week zero' type game vs La. Tech. It was very hot and humid, late afternoon kick. Tim Rattay was the QB, he threw for 590 yards. However, Troy Edwards caught 21! (Twenty-One) balls for a then NCAA record 405 yards, a few scores (54, 80, 94) AND he ran back kicks/punts. Then he managed to drop a wide open deep post for a TD in the second half as well. He looked like he was going to die after the game. Nebraska won 56-27, La Tech had negative 21 yards rushing (sacks). I think the RB had 4 carries for 4 yards. They outgained Nebraska in total yards as well. That was not a bad Nebraska secondary, that day perhaps, but Edwards was unbelievable.

OU has also had a good running game for much of the last 20 years. And more balanced than people think when they hear "Mike Leach" and "Air Raid." Last year, we had two 1,000-yard rushers (one was Kyler Murray) and were 40-ish yards from having a third one, as Trey Sermon missed a game or two due to an injury. And that was after our leading rusher--Rodney Anderson--went down with a season-ending injury early in the season. Considered in isolation, that would sound like a wishbone team. And our team rushing last year was only 203 yards behind that of the 1975 wishbone/MNC team.
It seems like we've generally had at least two very good receivers, rather than a single bell-cow, so the yardage has been well-spread-around. That might explain something. Or not.
Also, there were a couple of years in the early teens (2013-14) when we struggled--relatively--on offense, and more in passing than rushing, as our QBs were Blake Bell and Trevor Knight--two great guys, but only so-so QBs. It didn't matter how good our receivers were--those two guys could not hit them consistently.
Finally, I'm not sure how significant your list is, as it only shows ranking. John Standeford of Purdue, your #10, is #30 on the list that includes all FCS teams. Sterling Shepard, OU's next guy on the list, would be #48 on your lists, and is #73 on the FCS list. Standeford has 3788 career receiving yards; Shepard has 3482. 306 yards of difference spread over 38 intervening P5 receivers. They're jammed in there pretty tight.

100% called his being a bust. As a Florida fan, I saw a lot of him and I'd say about 85% of his passes were completed within 7 yards of the line of scrimmage. And he had a great (yet diminutive) WR in Craig Yeast.
The funniest part of his UK career was when he attempted to run the option. I think Bill Curry was their coach on that one.
