Gary didn't deserve 1st team or 2nd team. He missed 4 games this year and when he did play he was a non-factor in most games.

David Long had a better year than LaVert Hill, he deserved 1st team over LaVert Hill in the media poll.

No question Devin Bush and Chase Winovich belonged. I'd argue Chase should've won Defensive Player of the Year over Bush.

edit: can't believe Khaleke Hudson's regression. Looked like an absolute stud in 2017 primed for a dominant 2018 and potential 1st or 2nd round pick- to being a complete non-factor and not even making All-B1G 3rd team. Not sure I've seen a defensive player take a bigger step back ever.

This is the 4th time since 2012 that Iowa has had the Big Ten DB POY

Micah Hyde - 2012
Desmond King - 2015
Josh Jackson - 2017
Amani Hooker - 2018

It is not just a coincidence that Phil Parker was promoted to Iowa's DC in 2012 while continuing to coach the DB's at the same time.

I am afraid one day somebody is going to recognize the guru that Parker is and steal him away from Iowa.

I'm not concerned about Parker going anywhere. I don't think he has any desire to be a HC, and I don't see him leaving Kirk for a bigger program. He may move on when Kirk retires.
I'll also add I was pretty surprised to see Hooker get DB POY. He's a good player and I'm glad to have him, but that vote tells me there just wasn't a dominant CB in the league this year.
I usually place much more value in the coaches vote than media, but they had some really odd picks this year. Maybe this is an effect of league size, so coaches who didn't see a player are relying on reputation? As an example for Iowa, I can't imagine any coach who watched film would vote Fant over Hockenson at TE.

Do these awards have any/much tangible value?

I was just thinking this, too.

I am going to pat myself on the back a little.

When voting on the pre-season all Big Ten teams this last summer on this board, I argued that Iowa could have both the 1st and 2nd team All Big Ten TE's, which came true.

I also argued that Amani Hooker was going to be an All Big Ten Safety, which came true.

As far as anything?

OK, I'll bite.

A)  Purdue, which had arguably the 2nd best offense in the Big Ten gets exactly ONE player on the entire coaches team?  I know I'm biased, but that seems a hair low.

B)  With that said, most of the individual awards seem OK.  Nothing too "out there".....with one blatant exception.  What the hell did Trace McSorley do this year that warranted 2nd team for both coaches and media?  He didn't have a bad year, and he had better than average running stats for a QB.....but compared to a good chunk of the other QB's in the conference he is not even close.  His stats were actually significantly WORSE than last year (when he also got 2nd team).  For the Big Ten, his QB rating was about 7th, QB yards 8th, YPA 7th, Completion percentage 11th.  He was only the 2nd best QB rusher in the conference (Illinois Bush, who played 2 less games).  Was this some kind of "lifetime achievement award"?  I just don't get it.

grillrat... I actually agree with you on b).   I also felt on defense there were a few players giving conference honors based upon reputation and not performance.

I guess I'm trying to figure out the motivation for your question, which is why I asked for clarification. Are you asking if they receive trophies or certificates or monetary value? Or are you asking if the awards are meaningless?

I think they get an award, no?
Silver Football to Haskins this year??
The UW OL got a lot of recognition. Voters must have looked at their pre-season votes and held same so as to not look stupid. Only Benz and maybe Badass deserved anything.

Grillrat, I agree a lot with yor second point.

Re: Purdue's inclusion, I'm more wishy-washy. Blough wouldn't make my top 3. I wouldn't take Knox over the other selections. There's an argument for Zico over DPJ and Hopkins over Gentry. I did not focus on OL enough to have an informed opinion. So I guess I would concede better 3rd team inclusion, but that's about it, IMO.

MSU had 7 offensive players make the list last year.  6 of the 7 returned.  1 of those 6 made the list this year...as HM

I'm biased as well, but honestly, I don't know which other Purdue players you would have put up there. I honestly would have put Blough up above McSorley, and I think if you look at it statistically probably a coin flip between him and Patterson for 2nd vs 3rd team. Being biased, I'd put him 2nd because I think from top to bottom [OL, RB, WR] Blough was surrounded by less talent than Patterson, so if his stats were similar it's more deserving of individual honors.
But beyond Blough, I can't think of any other Purdue players I'd argue hard for. Brycen Hopkins was third-team for the media but I'm not sure there's a clear-cut case either way.
BTW @iahawk15 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=874) -- you missed Freshman of the Year: Rondale Moore.

I'm asking is any honors such as this have any real value of any kind.  Do NFL scouts pay any attention?  I suppose the players feel honored and get some kind of certificate.  I'm not against the concept at all, but I don't know if it really matters who gets named and who is left out beyond some personal feelings.

I will admit I pay little attention to AA honors and the various national awards also unless an opposing team has a bunch on it.  If say USC has 5 AAs and the Heisman winner, I can figure USC is pretty good, but it doesn't much matter to me if they were properly awarded or not.

I dunno.  I dimly recall getting some kind of All County award in basketball and I kept the trophy around for a few years.  It didn't really mean anything but a free meal at a banquet.

I don't know, mean something to who?  To your NFL prospects?  Probably not.

But what does winning a sales award mean?  Or a spelling bee?  It's still an accomplishment, it's still something you'll always have.  As far as opening any other doors?  Probably not

40 years later at a tailgate party with beer in hand, when it comes out that these guys were former players, the question is, were you any good?  Were you a starter?  Did you letter?

Then you pull the card, "I was 3rd team all-big ten"

yup, had a dern fine season in 2018~

the guys I tailgate with in Lincoln think they remember some things, they do get their names and positions correct.

And there are better helmets and concussion protocol today

Iowa junior TE Noah Fant has declared for the NFL draft and will skip Iowa's bowl game.

When I was young, I of course knew all about UGA players and nearly nothing about anyone else's other than a superstar.  So, I'd notice our "great running back" didn't get All SEC First Team and think it must have been fixed.  Had I looked further, I likely would have seen that Joe Blow at MissState really had an exceptional year.

I'm sure some fans get stuck on the first part and don't look past their noses still.
