Percent of Undefeated Teams with 1st Loss
Week 0/1: 36.15% (47/130)
Week 2: 37.35% (31/83)
Maximum possible Undefeated Teams at End of the Regular Season:
11: We lost 2 this week as the Sun Belt can now only have one team finish undefeated and Notre Dame lost. That leaves us with 10 possible conference champs who can end the year unbeaten plus independent Army.
Week 2 Thoughts:
-Idaho was removed from this list for the last time with their loss to UNLV. As we will eventually expand this out to a 1 loss team list too though, I will continue to make notes on them until they lose one more.
-Through 2 weeks, we, for the most part, have avoided any conference having a total disaster. Every one of the power conference continues to have undefeated teams seriously in the national title chase. The most at danger in that regard this week were probably the ACC and Big 12, but with Clemson taking down Auburn, Oklahoma beating Ohio State, and TCU holding strong vs. Arkansas, both conferences are still on solid footing (not that both couldn’t have got back in it, but a big perception gap was possible with losses there).
-On the Group of 5 level, only the Sun Belt seems to have truly blown its best chance at getting the New Years Six bid. Given conference strength, it likely would take an undefeated team from the conference and the only remaining one is Coastal Carolina who is not eligible for a bowl this year due to being in transition to I-A status. Only remaining hope would have to include one of the 1-loss teams in the conference having a monster upset game vs. someone very good. For the NY6 bid, the American would seem to have the strong advantage right now with 7 remaining undefeated teams although a few other teams from other conference are certainly definitely very much on the radar (particularly San Diego State).
-With Georgia winning at Notre Dame, Army is our final independent undefeated team. They play Ohio State next week.
Week 3 Thoughts:
-We have 9 games between undefeated teams next week. They are: Illinois @ South Florida, Air Force @ Michigan, UCLA @ Memphis, SMU @ TCU, LSU @ Mississippi State, Kansas State @ Vanderbilt, Kentucky @ South Carolina, Clemson @ Louisville, Ole Miss @ Cal
-1-loss Idaho plays at Western Michigan
Remaining Undefeated Teams: ACC: 6, American: 7, Big 12: 5, Big Ten: 8, Conference USA: 2, MAC: 3, Mountain West: 2, PAC-12: 8, SEC: 9, Sun Belt: 1, independents: 1, total: 52
