It's back to band for me tonight. Westerville North made sure to schedule defending champs Olentangy Orange a couple weeks ago and got horsewhipped. Tonight we host runner up St. Xavier out of Cincinnati. We'll see how that goes. At the least, it's supposed to be a pretty nice night.
Tomorrow is supposed to be mild and rainy, which sounds like a pretty amazing time watching football all day in the sunroom. The wife will be working, the girls will be wiped out. Sounds tranquil.
I should also mention today is the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. A landmark for ten million reasons, but a small one is that it I was just a couple weeks into my first year of law school at Ohio State. A perk of going to OSU is season tickets to the football games. My second year of law school marked OSU winning a national championship (with me in attendance), which set off a lifelong passion for talking to strangers on football message boards. Which is how I found all of you!

I should also mention today is the 25th Anniversary of 9/11.
Was in high school. Woke up late for school, with the radio on, and heard a top-of-the-hour report about a fire in one of the WTC towers. By the time I got to class, the second WTC tower was hit. Every TV in the school was turned to the coverage. Our history teacher, who was also our basketball coach and an Army vet, told us we were going to war. Parents began arriving to school to take their kids home early, including my Dad. He took me to his work office where there was a TV turned to the coverage. 25 years ago.
After that we all lived with the clear dividing line of pre-9/11 Vs post-9/11.
Now we live with two: pre-Covid Vs post-Covid.

Me and one of my coworkers got to the office early that morning. We always had some sort of news on, usually CNN, to start the day. We had CNN going - no sound.
They showed the first plane crashing into the WTC, and my first thought was "Holy shit! That's a serious navigation error!"
Then the second one got hit. That's when I knew we were at war.

I know this week may seem top heavy, but I also feel like Miss State @ Minnesota is a sneaky good game on the slate.
For some reason I've been feeling very sentimental the last few weeks, or at least felt the need to record things for historical purposes. I recorded a bunch of stuff at the State Fair last week from longtime people who are either retiring or know that they don't have many Fairs left. And now we are on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
I've already told my story. A Block was physics with a teacher who had been a Vietnam-era Army MP. Shortly after the first bell and announcements, his wife called the room phone (remember those?) and said that another plane had hit the Pentagon. We actually had a fairly long conversation about what our futures held for us, before we went over to another teacher's room, where we watched both towers fall on the TV. It remains the only time I've ever been in a room where 55 HS seniors did not say a word for nearly an hour, until the passing bell rang at 10:00 and we went on our way.
This year 9/11 is a Friday. It's the same calendar configuration as 2009, when the New Brickhouse opened this weekend. Gatorama/John Hall came out of travel retirement to attend the first game vs. the Air Force Academy.
Also, I wondered how my grandmother felt on Wednesday, December 7, 1966. She grew up on the Pearl City Peninsula (look that up), and was at home when the IJN came calling on that fateful Sunday morning. They fled for the cane fields above what is now Pearlridge Mall, stayed hidden for most of the next week, and returned to find their house all shot up.
Then again, given that she was about my age and had 5 kids between 17 and 10 to get to the school bus, she might not have thought much about it at all.

I shared some coverage with my students today. They had A LOT of questions.
Another teacher was in my room, observing a student. Said she was in kindergarten when it happened, made me feel old. I was 21 asleep at a lady-friend's place :93: when her sister called and woke us up, telling us to put on the news.
That was between the 2 planes hitting the WTC. We saw the 2nd and my friend was still thinking it was an accident, but I told her nope, not after 2. It was on purpose.
My students today wanted to know everything about it. Yes, everyone in the planes died. Yes, the people in the buildings died. No, there weren't any kids in the buildings. Yes, we found out who did it.
The biggest question mark after all of the questions is that they couldn't wrap their heads around people doing this and knowing they'd die doing it.
How do you explain demented ideological actions to a 9 year old? You don't.

Kids had a bunch of questions at dinner tonight. I think the thing about living through it, beyond the horror of experiencing it, is that we were advanced enough to have enough information at our fingertips, but still not enough to be reliable. There are YoUTube videos of CNN, FoxNews, ABC, whatever, in real time, and the amount of stuff that just didn't happen that they "reported" on was insane. It made a scary situation even scarier. Pearl harbor, nobody knew about in real time. JFK was in real time, but it was isolated. You rewatch those broadcasts, there are reports of a car bomb at the State Department, a gunman in the Capitol. Then you had the anthrax and Richard Reid shortly thereafter, there was a sense of fear that I think goes beyond what this country has ever felt.

I haven't watched any 9/11 footage in a very long time. There are two things I pretty much dont need to see anymore, Jeffrey Dahmer shows (i lived that in Milwaukee) and 9/11.

I did that with my 8th graders a couple of years ago....it was absolutely the one thing that cut through the bullshit and reached all of them. Maybe 75% would just clown around and don't really care about their own academic future, but those calls shut them up and made them have an actual sympathetic feeling for other human beings.
It wasn't "necessary," but it made it real. It made it something to not joke around about. These are kids that joke around about Hitler and anything else you can think of as a line you don't cross. But for one day, there wasn't any snickering.
And those 75% aren't getting jack shit from home, educationally or culturally. So a little reality check on a major American historical event is a gift, even if it's a stark one.

The fundamentals of those programs were not quite as strong as some be believed. And it turned out loading up conferences could often just create bigger middles.
also, the world getting smaller, changed the dynamics for Miami dramatically. But for now they’ve adjusted.

Watched some of Mizzou-KU last night. I always enjoyed that rivalry. I was reminded of the 2007 game when they were both in the top 5. Mizzou looked pretty meh and KU just looked bad. KU’s QB is just plain bad.

I remember that game very well. What's crazy about that 2007 game is that it meant nothing outside of the schools in September, and no one thought it would amount to anything more than that. By the time it rolled around, you had all the historical bad blood suddenly and very unexpectedly gassed up by both teams being top-5 and the game becoming a de facto MNC elimination game.

Deep into the 1st quarter in College Station. Arizona State defense starting out strong Vs A&M's offense, although a big part of sending the Aggie offense off the field has to do with how unimaginative and sputtering A&M's offense is running. And with A&M's defense strong too, this 'field position' game broke open for A&M when their special teams recovered a fumbled punt at ASU's 8-yard line. Several runs later A&M is first to score, up 7-0.

When your stadium held 80,000 and your averaged 5-10,000 after about 30 consecutive losing seasons you could afford to do that

When I was insulting the OU OC, I later wondered if it's just me getting old, complaining when so many teams have some sort of great athlete taking snaps, but can't/doesn't just do a 5-step drop and throw a corner route.
Why are there so many QBs today that would do well on the old American Gladiators show, but can't just drop back in the pocket and throw a normal route on time?!?!
I don't care about OU, UM has the same thing. Some dude taking snaps that could probably win every Survivor challenge blind-folded, but can't/doesn't take a 3-step drop and hit a receiver in-stride. Why is the athlete/not QB so sought-after? Why are these the 4 and 5-star recruits?

Bad news for Michigan is their offense won't be putting opponents away, even inferior competition.
And if we're going to mention discipline, Michigan has racked up the penalties this afternoon - 11 today, 9 last week.
Nevertheless, 2-0.
Michigan should have a filthy defense that will only get better as the year goes imo. This will keep them in every game imo.
Unfortunately, the offense is a disaster right now and they commit so many penalties and mistakes as a team it's borderline outrageous.

Tennessee has blown this game open because of Alberto Mendoza’s truly awful QB play Vs the Vols. Down 24-10 at the half, and the difference is Mendoza’s interceptions, one of which was a Pick 6.
Georgia Tech has opened the season looking worse than they’ve had under Brent Key, who, if he weren’t a former Yellow Jacket player, would’ve likely been baited to leave Atlanta by now, for an SEC gig like Auburn.

Such a weird game. The stats look completely dominant for OSU, with 240 yards to 97 for Texas. But Texas should absolutely have at least 10 points and probably 14, and OSU was lucky to get the ball o that last touchdown.

If his name was Arch Smith, he'd be virtually anonymous.....as anonymous as the starting QB of Texas can be. David Ash, anyone? Casey Thompson.
But the other side of the coin is this...only one QB with more career attempts than Manning that has a better passer rating in Texas history is Colt McCoy, and it's CLOSE. Surprising? That's from expectations due to the name on the back of the jersey.
Idk what end of that double-edged sword is sharper.

Anyway I missed the game but from much reading I'm gathering a certain concensus across the Buckeye Boards. That the 2024 loss to M* is Ryan Day's worst defeat in C-bus as he unexplainably went away from what was working. But this choke job has to be firmly planted as a close second and that just might be accurate.
And what film I've seen IMO if Arch brings that game every week the Horns will be an extremely tough out. He has NFL pedigree and his receivers just might help him out moving forward. But the football gods are mercurial and enjoy mayem so maybe just maybe the Dirt Burglars will pick themselves off the mat and thow a wrench in the gears.
And College Football is still the greatest sport there is ✔️

I was channel surfing CFB games and they all seemed to be out of hand, so I watched the Braves beat the Phils in a laugher. I was too tired to change the channel.
I thought Tech might give Tenn a game, which they did somewhat briefly. Tech can be pretty good when they get an outstanding QB.

Those people are on crack. The worst loss was against Oregon in 2021 when it was clear our players had no idea how to play defense.

Yeah, I unfortunately didn't see most of the comeback as we were in the middle of cooking dinner.
But up until that point, what I saw was a QB who wasn't seeing the field, was holding the ball too long, and just didn't look comfortable being a QB.
He wasn't helped by his pass-catchers much. I think the fumble (not his fault), interception (not his fault), and dropped Wingo ball in the end zone (not his fault) may have rattled him. It was only after that where I saw him missing some throws--I wonder if he was trying to force it too much because they were down. And then there were a fair number of other drops I saw where his receivers let him down on good throws.
But yeah, what I saw was a QB that struggled under pressure and wasn't processing. The kind of QB that can be good to great against weak defenses but gets exposed against a team like OSU--and will have a serious difficulty trying to succeed at the next level where defenses are faster and windows are tighter.

Wisconsin opened as a 29 point favorite, but by game time was closer to a 42 point favorite. While they did not struggle, they also did not look good. I just hope the AD is paying attention.

That game was frankly often unenjoyable, which has been the case in basically every body bag game this staff has coached. (It’s fair to say that decent seasons, overcome, unimpressive, bodybag games, but we haven’t had many of those late)
