Few movies are more closely tied to the 1980s than Back to the Future. The DeLorean, Marty McFly, skateboards, Huey Lewis, mall parking lots, home video, synthesizers, and the movie’s optimistic view of technology all scream 1985. Even though much of the story takes place in 1955, its cultural identity, quotability, and staying power make it one of the strongest contenders in the entire tournament.
(15) Weekend at Bernie’s (1989)
Weekend at Bernie’s is pure late-’80s absurdity: young professionals, corporate greed, beach-house excess, loud fashion, and a ridiculous premise that somehow became a lasting pop-culture reference. It is a much lower seed, but its style, setting, and comic identity are unmistakably of the decade.
