(7) Weird Science (1985)
Teenage computer fantasies, Anthony Michael Hall, Kelly LeBrock, synthesizers, house parties, ridiculous fashion, and pure wish-fulfillment comedy make Weird Science one of the most unmistakably ’80s movies in the field. Its premise could only have come from a decade fascinated by home computers, teenage independence, and larger-than-life fantasy.
(10) Say Anything… (1989)
Say Anything… earned its spot through emotional staying power and one of the most iconic romantic images of the decade: Lloyd Dobler holding the boom box overhead. John Cusack’s performance, the late-’80s young-adult setting, the music, and the movie’s sincerity have helped it remain recognizable and beloved long after release.

Ha ! Kelly LeBrock's character looks like Eva Longoria.

I wouldn't call this much of an upset if Say Anything wins. Any more takers?
-
If this was a board full of chicks....Say Anything.
But it is not, and I am baffled at the vote.

We've got 11 votes. Seems like we top out at about 15. Give it a day or two more.
I'm completely surprised by the voting. I agree with the earlier sentiment about Say Anything being a chick flick. LOL.
-
No doubt it is a chick flick, but it is also an 80s time capsule--and a darned fine example of one. For me, this one comes down to two very 80s movies, where Say Anything--chick flick notwithstanding--is just the better movie. But I can see why Weird Science would win.

Say Anything is totally forgettable except for one scene. Weird Science isn't just a better movie, it's SO 80s

Nah, Say Anything is incredibly emblematic of the true high school experience and deeply relatable for anyone that was in high school at the time. Which is precisely why it's getting so many votes.
"I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen."
"So if you guys know so much about women, how come you're here at like, the Gas n Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women, anywhere?"

It's equally relatable for anyone who was in high school ever

I know this isn't true because you're dogging on it and you weren't in high school in the 80s... ~???
-
According to the INterwEbZ, Peter Gabriel's song wasn't added to John Cusack's famous scene until post-production, and during filming, the boombox was actually playing Fishbone's "Bonin' in the Boneyard."

Didn't realize that was Jeremy Piven in that movie, lol. Shouldn't be surprised. Him and John Cusack are the original Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.....nobody really knows how many movies they're in together.

I'm not dogging on it, but it's the Shes All That for the 80s. Everything about that movie screams 90s, but its not a good movie. They are both very fine movies, but they are timeless, except for the clothing and the tech

Opinions are like assholes. And so are all of us. :)
I'll leave it at that.
Now we need our last couple of voters to weigh in on this one and decide it.
-
it's a draw - flip a coin
-
Yeah I think @Gigem (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1706) is just gonna have to decide this one and move on.
-
caught myself just in time....
nearly posted a pic of Kelly

This one is tough for me. Say Anything is probably a better movie overall because it is a more realistic view of how the time period was. Weird Science is surely one of those core zany '80s adventure movies, and it certainly has the more memorable scenes, but it is still more of a fantasy movie than a proper reflection of '80s life.
In the end, my vote (Say Anything) came down to the fact that there are a few scenes in Weird Science that have not aged well.
-
And this one appears to be done, too, @Gigem (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1706) . Glad they were decided by vote instead of coinflip. Now on to Region 4...

It’s tied.
8-8.
I’m going to allow Weird Science to proceed. No reason.

Kelly was HOT!

Fair enough. I too was a fan of Miss LeBrock.
