Title: Which is the better 80's move: The Goonies or Major League
Post by: Gigem on August 30, 2026, 07:50:42 PM
(3) The Goonies (1985)
Bicycles, treasure maps, booby traps, caves, pirate gold, Data’s inventions, Chunk, Sloth, and “Goonies never say die” made this one of the defining childhood adventure movies of the decade. Its mix of suburban kids, practical effects, humor, and danger has given it huge staying power across generations.

(14) Major League (1989)
Major League became one of the most enduring sports comedies of the ’80s thanks to Wild Thing, Jobu, Harry Doyle, the Cleveland underdogs, and a deep bench of quotable scenes. Its lower seed reflects its narrower sports audience, but its characters, jokes, and rewatchability have lasted remarkably well.

I love both movies. The Goonies is more 80's.

Goonies is 80s kids.  Major League is 80s adults.

I was still a kid in the 80s so I voted Goonies, but I've seen Major League probably 10-15 more times than Goonies.

My kids did love Goonies though, when I played it for them a few years back.

I think Major League resonates with this group more than many films because we're mostly[/all at this point?] male, and sports fans. That gives it a boost.

There are definitely some parts of it (fashion, etc) that are unmistakably 80s, but I don't know that I'd call it an "80s movie" more than I'd call it a sports parody movie.

(That said, the 80s were a great decade for parody movies...)

Honestly, Major League is pretty 80s. The biggest thing is the dying rust belt baseball team with a greedy corporate villain trying to move to the sunbelt (bonus points that she's a woman attacking a male-dominated sport), Willy Mayes Hayes, looking like a Ricky Henderson clone, Cuban players breaking into the bigs, Ricky Vaughn has very 80s authority-challenging fashion, a little casual racism (with the grounds crew scenes), and greaseballs. Ok, a lot of this is baseball 80s, but still, quite 80s.

This one's close.  What's the max voters we've seen, 16?  This one could turn the other way if everyone votes.
