Mr. T, Hulk Hogan, Survivor, training montages, enormous wealth, robots, James Brown, Cold War rivalry, patriotism, and pure excess make these films a concentrated formula for 1980s popular culture. Rather than allowing two similar sequels to occupy separate positions, they combine under the Franchise Rule to represent Rocky at his most unmistakably ’80s.
(14) Road House (1989)
Patrick Swayze, barroom fights, outrageous villains, martial arts, mullets, blues music, and endlessly quotable dialogue helped Road House grow from a modest release into a major cult favorite. Its exaggerated masculinity and late-’80s action style make it impossible to mistake for a movie from another decade.
