(7) Police Academy — Franchise Rule vs. (10) Rain Man
(7) Police Academy — Franchise Rule
The original Police Academy and its many sequels became a defining comedy franchise of the decade. Mahoney, Hightower, Tackleberry, Hooks, Jones, Commandant Lassard, and the series’ unmistakable sound effects became widely recognizable. One entry represents the franchise rather than allowing its sequels to occupy multiple tournament positions.
(10) Rain Man (1988)
Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise turned Rain Man into one of the decade’s biggest and most remembered dramas. Its performances, road-trip structure, casino sequence, repeated dialogue, and emotional development remain part of popular culture. It is not the flashiest ’80s movie, but its staying power is undeniable.

Rain man was a good movie
didn't see the other one

Wow I have my first upset. I thought for sure Police Academy was way more '80's than Rain Man.
Nobody will deny that Rain Man is a much better film, and probably won a bunch of awards, and is generally regarded as one of the best films of the decade.
But Police Academy...oh man. Totally '80's. Tackleberry, Hooks, Mahoney, Lasard. Bubba Smith as Hightower.
Kind of disappointed, but the people have voted.

Young Tom Cruise, like young Eddie Murphy, just screams 80s.

Well, Sam, I'm pretty sure you're a '75er like me. So for me, Police Academy was a staple of cable TV in the '80's. Lots of gratuitous nudity, silly plot lines, and off the chain characters.
Rain Man was late 80's. To me, it could be made in 2026 and be just as good. There is nothing about the movie that would anchor it to the '80's. Granted, it's been awhile since I've seen it in it's entirety.
