Title: OT Best 80's Movie Round 1 #5 Trading Places or #12 Heathers
Post by: Gigem on July 30, 2026, 01:10:25 PM
(5) Trading Places vs. (12) Heathers
(5) Trading Places (1983)
Trading Places captures early-’80s wealth, Wall Street culture, class divisions, and the arrival of Eddie Murphy as a major star. It remains funny, sharp, quotable, and highly rewatchable decades later. Its combination of social satire and broad comedy gives it staying power beyond its original era.
(12) Heathers (1989)
Heathers took the familiar 1980s high-school movie and turned it into a dark, cynical satire. Its cliques, fashion, exaggerated slang, Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and later cult reputation earned it a place in the tournament. It received a lower seed because its appeal is less universal than the major John Hughes films, but its influence and quotability have endured.

Like both but Trading Places is great. Apparently there is a Heathers musical my wife and daughter are going to in NYC

Heathers is a great comedy noir and plenty 80s, but Trading Places is iconic.  It probably could have been a 2 or 3 seed.

(Note to gigem-- I am not criticizing the seeding.  Just discussing. ;) )

I totally agree that Trading Places could have been a much higher seed. A lot of really great movies in that slot. Tough choices had to be made.

but at the end of the day, it could end up winning the tournament, or at least going deep.

I’ve never seen Heathers either.  I figured I can’t put 100% of my movies in there.

Remember, it’s not about the best movie. It’s the “80-Iest” movie.

Trading Places checks every 80s box for the genre it is.

Heathers is a memorable mid major champ

Oh I didn't realize. I would say Heathers feels a little more like a 90's movie. Like it became more popular in the 90s among the grunge movement and emo/goth stuff.

I'm not sure what that means

It’s definitely subjective, but that’s also the fun of it.
By “80-iest,” I mean the movie that most represents the decade—not necessarily the movie with the best acting, story, or reviews.
I’m looking at things like the music, fashion, technology, attitudes, cars, slang, characters, quotability, cultural impact, and whether people still recognize and talk about it today.
Basically, if you had to show someone one movie and say, “This is what the 1980s felt like,” which one would you choose?

What % of the score is synthesizer music?
How many Ferrari Testarossas are there?
Do any characters or extras carry around a huge boombox?
Are there any rich yuppies?  Bonus points if they're doing lines of coke.
Is half the wardrobe dept made of denim?
How poofy are the womens' hair?  Is it frizzy at least?
Does the token black character have a jheri curl?
And most importantly, how many sexy/dramatic saxaphone solos are there?

Closing this one down, I think Trading Places has soundly defeated Heathers.
