Title: 24-Team Playoff: 1938
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on March 04, 2026, 08:59:25 PM
No CCGs.  Assuming only 1 mid-major (G5):
Top 8 Seeds (Byes):
1 Notre Dame (8-0)
2 TCU (10-0)
3 Duke (9-0)
4 Tennessee (9-0)
5 Oklahoma (9-0)
6 Carnegie Mellon (7-1)
7 Pitt (8-2)
8 USC (7-2)

1st Round
17 Alabama 7-1-1 @
16 Michigan 6-1-1.............winner @ 1 ND
.
24 Miami 8-2 @
9 Holy Cross 8-1.................winner @ 8 USC
.
20 Dartmouth 7-2 @
13 Fordham 6-1-2.........winner @ 4 Tennessee
.
21 Santa Clara 6-2 @
12 California 9-1................winner @ 5 Oklahoma
.
22 Georgetown 8-0 @
11 Cornell 5-1-1..........winner @ 6 Carnegie Mellon
.
19 Northwestern 4-2-2 @
14 Texas Tech 10-0.........winner @ 3 Duke
.
23 Clemson 7-1-1 @
10 Minnesota 6-2..............winner @ 7 Pitt
.
18 Tulane 7-2-1 @
15 Villanova 8-0-1..............winner @ 2 TCU

.
Boy, these are some tough roads to hoe, with the teams travelling by train and all.  Alabama, Miami, and Clemson going up north in December.  If the Canes won, they'd get a slow, long trip to LA as a reward.
TCU was the eventual NC in real life, after a season-ending loss to the Trojans by the Irish.
Carnegie Mellon and Pitt could have a neighborhood brawl in the semis.

There appears to be a lot more than one midmajor.

I was too young to remember 1938 but it looks more like a basketball tourney
I'm rooting for Georgetown

One branch of the bracket has Bama, Michigan and Notre Dame. By far the toughest by today's standards.

Another has Georgetown, Cornell and Carnegie Mellon. All low end FCS.

Somebody check my contract and see if I'm obligated to root for Tulane.  'Cuz I don't wanna.

The Vols' non-shutout bowls make me think they're ripe for an upset in the 24-team postseason.  Maybe to Fordham.
