Title: Flying into B1G country (MN)
Post by: Gigem on January 29, 2026, 11:20:56 PM
Well, we found a truck/equipment we need for our business. It’s in Minnesota.

Flying into MSP ( Minneapolis/St Paul) Friday night, then going about 1-1.5 hrs East, then hopefully everything checks out and we’ll drive home Saturday-Sunday

Never been further North than CO or KS.

Looks like we’re going to hit MN, Iowa, Nebraska. Never been to any of those. Then probably Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Monday is going to suck.

um...if you go 1 to 1.5 hours east of Minneapolis,  you'll be in Wisconsin too.

1-1.5 hours by foot.

He's hoofing it from the airport to the truck place.

Heck, for that matter I’m not far (relatively speaking) from Canada. But we’re on a limited timeline, as it stands driving from MN back to Texas in ~2 days in a single cab truck is going to be…long.

I'd fly up there and then hire somebody to do it and fly back.

Why the rush? On my 6 coast-to-coast road trips I was glad to take my time on the more minor highways, immersing myself in the roadsides of fly-over country. Granted it isn't an ideal time of year for hitting the road, and the two worst snowstorms I've ever travel through were in Iowa in winter, but still, take a few more days if you can.

Picture I took of a grain elevator outside Hastings Nebraska in 2018:

Coldest hellscape I've ever encountered --- pack a coat!

It’s not a vacation, it’s a work trip.

The main driver is that my son needs to be back at work at least Monday.
I can take off Monday if needed but I don’t want to burn vacation.

Eau Claire or Menomonie for the truck pickup?

You'll be pleased to know that tomorrow's high of 17 is the warmest high temp in 3 weeks.

Supposed to meet up with the seller in the Morning. He’s picking us up, I forgot the name of the town.

I have a friend in Salina, KS that we may stop and visit. Not 100 sure yet, I’ll call him in the morning and find out.

Anything interesting on the way down?

I was wondering if you meant 1.5 hours West of MSP, not East.

Wave to Fearless on the way by.

Otherwise, not much to see this time of year. The Okoboji Winter Games were last weekend so you missed that. The bluffs ain't exactly the Rockies, but they'll be a welcome site after the flatness of SE MN and parts of NW IA.

yup, that's my route to Texas - too bad I'm out of town, I'd buy you a frosted schooner of beer and a Charlie Boy sammich at Miles Inn (Sioux City)
it's a good stop if you have time - 2622 Leech Ave, Sioux City, IA 51106

through the west side of Omaha to Lincoln - you'll be able to see the state capital building from I-80 north of Lincoln - the penis of the prairie
at York, NE, were you exit I-80 and go south on hwy 81, there's place called Chances "R" Restaurant & Lounge

cheapest fuel will be in Oklahoma City

I think Kansas has a Cousin Eddie museum somewhere.

Bugeater did you buy into these operations you've mention names/addresses enough??? You remind me of Peyton Manning after winning Super Bowl in 2016, repeatedly stating he was going to "drink a lot of Budweiser" to celebrate. He told CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson, "I'm going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight, Tracy, I promise you that," and later mentioned, "I've had a few Budweisers and it's been a special night".

Turns out he had recently bought stakes in two Anheuser-Busch InBev distributorships in Louisiana :cheer:

Stopover for the night in Wichita. I was surprised at how hilly some of the terrain was in MN, NEB, and parts of Kansas. Iowa too.

Lot of corn fields, silos, and John Deere dealers.
