Title: Army-Navy Poll
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on December 13, 2025, 05:07:07 PM
I tend to cheer for Navy, for no particular reason.

If I had to guess, it could be living in Jacksonville where there's a Naval base.  I like the option offenses the academies tend to use.

As a former USCG Master Captain, I'm going with the water guys.

My brother was stationed there and met his wife there and liked it - at that time

I love an option offense, and in my formative years, Navy just ran it better, so I tend to side with them in this game. Plus I always liked coach Ken.

I also enjoy the way Army does it, but for whatever reason, Navy caught my attention early.

(My first service academy game was actually the local team vs Air Force. My head was spinning. They certianly didn't have that offense in Madden)

Same here.

Odd, because my Father did a stint in the Army, and the QB from my HS started for them while I was in college.

Older brother was in Army , Father was in Navy.

I tend to pull for Army though mostly due to its consistent use of option football.

Both my grandfathers served in WW2, one in the Army in France (great stories and memorabilia*), the other in the Navy in the South Pacific (don't think he saw much combat, that I know of).  So for family connections, they kind of cancel out.  Except for that I was much closer to my grandpa who was Army.

Then there's my lifelong LSU fandom, the Ole War Skule and its historic connections to the army.

Not sure if any of that is why I tend to pull for Army, or if it's just that Navy has had the upper hand for most of the time I've paid any attention, and I tend to root for upsets.

* one of my favorite possessions is my grandpa's old army helmet.  It has a dent in it where a German soldier hit him in the head with the butt of his rifle, somewhere in France.  My grandpa was a medic and was tending to another soldier when he was whacked, didn't see the guy coming.  The blow rolled him over on his back, whereupon the German soldier was able to see my grandpa's sleeve patch indicating he was a medic, and the German soldier let him be.  That's the story according to my grandpa, as best as I can remember it.  That helmet's dent always gave me chills when I was a little boy......there's something haunting there, in the idea that Pe-Paw could've been wiped out and my whole family would never have existed.

I'm sure I've said this here several times before. Despite my Army service, I never developed a care about West Point's football team. I served with several West Point football players, and several more ring knockers, and to me it's always just been a college, like another college. I didn't go there, so I have my own football team to cheer for. I never liked the effort to ram the game down servicemembers' throats like we should care about it. I do like it when they rep the different divisions, particularly the one that I identify the most with, but I still don't really care. I also have several family members, including a pair of younger cousins, who attended Annapolis. A part of me likes them being happy about the outcome of the game, but I still mostly doesn't care. I liked it a few years ago when Army broke the Navy streak. I like that it's been back and forth recently. But I don't really care either way.

My brother was USMC and my BIL was Navy... And yet I don't have any rooting interest at all in this game.

I'm just usually looking forward to a decent game...
