I think it was bigger news to those of us who grew up near Great Lakes.

I'm in the deep South, born in Dec 1975, and I've known about it for a long time. Maybe because the song was popular, but it just seemed to stick in pop culture. I never really understood why it got so much attention, even decades later. Ships sink quite often, even with today's technology they still sink or have major issues.

I think because it was the biggest. Also, ships that big don't sink very often.

It sorta reminds me of the Titanic, which I know is quite small by modern standards but they advertised it as "unsinkable". I often wonder how often ships from that era really sank, to literally advertise something as unsinkable. Heck, this was before even WWI, when some passenger ships were intentionally sank. Did steel wells really sink quite often.

The song certainly increased the notoriety, but when I came to Wisconsin I was struck by how deeply the loss of the ship was felt 20+ years later. I agree that it impacted people who lived around the Great Lakes differently, much closer to home (not withstanding I think there were 2 or 3 people from Florida on the ship).
