Title: Big Ten Power Rankings After Week 10
Post by: ManHawk on November 02, 2025, 07:27:37 AM
What does everybody think?  Turns out USC can actually win a tough game on the road.  How can you possibly pick between Ohio St and Indiana for #1?
Is there a new Heisman favorite this week?  I'm just Sayin...

My rankings are in a post below.

1.  Ohio St -  the combo of Sayin,  Smith and Tate just looks unstoppable.  OSU has dominated in every big Big Ten game plus has an ooc win against Texas

2.  Indiana -  scores 55 points again!  Only thing missing from resume is a good ooc win.

3.  Oregon -  mixes in dominating wins with close wins.  Ore only loss is to Indiana.  Big test coming this week @Iowa

4.  Iowa -  has stepped it up recently with a couple cf dominating wins.  Iowa's only conference loss is to Indiana

5.  USC -  finally proved it can win on the road against a decent team.  Plus USC BEAT MICHIGAN in an earlier game.

6.  Michigan - did not look great against Purdue but still managed to pull out the win.  Plus Mich beat Washington in an earlier game.

7.  Washington - only losses are to OSU and Mich.  Wash has impressive win over ILL recently.

8.  Illinois -  dominates Rutgers in win.  ILL has 3 losses to Ind, Ohio St, and Wash and a win over USC

9.  Minnesota -  picks up gutsy win in OT over Mich st.  Minn may be 4-2 in conference but really only has 1 decent win, over Nebraska

10.  Nebraska -  loses close game at home, to USC.  Neb did manage to beat NW earlier in the season and has  lost to USC, Mich and Minn

11.  Northwestern -  has beat UCLA and Penn St and has a loss to Nebraska.

12.  UCLA -  has lost to NW and beat Penn St and Mich St, and MD

13.  Penn St -  had no answer for Ohio St.  Now they get to play Indiana.

14.  Rutgers - gets dominated by ILL.  Well, at least they beat Purdue the week before

15.  Purdue - winless in confernce but has some close losses recently.  Looks like a team about ready to break through

16.  Michigan St - almost pulls out win against Minn but loses in OT.

17.  Maryland - blown out by Indiana.  MD seems to be getting worse as season goes on.  But at least MD beat Wisc earlier

18.  Wisconsin - winless but at least Wisc scored a TD in its last game.

Hoosiers - blew out another Big Ten opponent,  this team seems destined for a trip to Indy and a spot in the College Football Playoff. They now sit at the highest ranking in the AP Poll in program history

Bucks - dominating performance. The Buckeyes had a little trouble in the first half because of an inopportune turnover, but they put their foot on the gas en route to a blowout of Penn State

Ducks - bounced back in a big way & still have a shot at both a Big Ten title and College Football Playoff.  Northwestern remains the only FBS team with a winning record that Oregon’s defeated this year.

USC - hard to drop USC alot after a loss on the road at Notre Dame. They just found a way to win Maiva didn't play his best game, still, the offense made big plays when it had to, and the defense came up big in the second half.

Michigan - didn't play particularly well V. Purdue, but at this point, all it has to do is keep winning. They're holes on this team tho the defense/team display toughness

Iowa - just how good is this Iowa team? The defense is really good, and it feels like the offense is coming around. If Iowa can beat the Ducks Saturday, you can queue up talk of a path to the College Football Playoff.

Huskies - Aside from the poor showing against Michigan on the road, Washington has looked like one of the top teams in the league despite the off week.

Illini - Won 35-13 vs. Rutgers, its schedule has been tough. Of the 3 losses, the Illini have lost to Ohio State/Indiana/Washington

'Skers - hard-luck loss @ home for the skers, who had to play a lot of the second half without starting injured QB Dylan Raiola because of injury.

Goophs - been good at pulling out close games, however against very good teams have been blowout losses But hey, the Gophers are prolly bowl bound

Wildcats - have been much better than anyone thought after the 1st weeks into the season, and still has a good shot at getting bowl-eligible.

Medina's objective power rankings:

First the rules:
This is completely objective:
Each team's opponents are ranked from 1- (5 or 6) based on performance against that team.  Ties are broken based on HFA but if there is a tie that can't be broken by HFA then the tied teams each get the average of the group's rankings.  Finally, OT games are considered closer than regulation games regardless of the final score.

Example:
Ohio State just beat Penn State.  The Buckeyes are 5-0 and the Nittany Lions are 0-5 but we aren't really comparing Ohio State to Penn State.  What we are doing instead is comparing the Buckeyes to PSU's other four opponents and the Lions to tOSU's other four opponents.  So for this example, as against Ohio State:

As against Penn State:

Based on the above, Medina's objective rankings are a follows:

Contenders:
1) Ohio State--convincing, quality win, no matter the caveats.
2) Indiana--dominant, again.
3) Oregon--bye

Top 25-ish:
4) Iowa--bye
5) USC--good road win, but not sure how good it really was.
6) Michigan--only because it has the H2H over Washington; this week wasn't that convincing.
7) Washington--bye

Not Ready for Prime Time:
8) Illinois--good win.
9) Penn State--still dangerous purely on its collection of talent.
10) Nebraska--what does the future hold without the starting QB?
11) Northwestern--don't sleep on the Wildcats...but they might also need to beat Minnesota to go to a bowl.
12) Minnesota--but they are here by a thread with a bunch of close, bottom-tier wins at home.
13) [October] UCLA--bye, but I have my doubts about Minnesota, so there's some opportunity here.
14) [October] Maryland--Indiana is good.
15) Rutgers--played a better team.

PurDon't:
16) Michigan State--tough way to lose, but that's what happens when you just aren't that good.
17) Purdue--plays like it's better than this, but loses. Over and over again.
18) Wis-can't, son--so bad they are also losing the coaching carousel.

  • INDIANA (2)
  • OHIO STATE (1)
  • Texas A&M (3)
  • Alabama (4)

  • Georgia (5)
  • Texas Tech (11)
  • OREGON (9)
  • Notre Dame (6)
  • Ole Miss (10)
  • Utah (13)
  • Miami (7)
  • Oklahoma (16)
  • Texas (19)
  • USC (18)
  • Louisville (17)
  • Vanderbilt (12)
  • MICHIGAN (15)
  • WASHINGTON (20)
  • Virginia (-)
  • IOWA (23)
  • ILLINOIS (-)
  • Georgia Tech (14)
  • Missouri (24)
  • Tennessee (21)

36. Nebraska (33)
52. Minnesota (53)
54. Northwestern (51)
55. Penn State (52)

70. Rutgers (68)
73. UCLA (71)
84. Wisconsin (84)
87. Michigan State (83)
96. Purdue (97)
Interesting that the computers put Mich and Wash above Iowa while the CFP committee put Iowa above Mich and Wash.

I guess that will all sort itself out in the next couple weeks.  Although Michigan's relatively easy schedule will make them hard to evaluate until they play Ohio St.

Updated SOR/SP+ bracket...

#12 South Florida at #5 Alabama; winner vs. #4 OREGON
#11 Virginia at #6 Georgia; winner vs. #3 OHIO STATE
#10 Oklahoma at #7 BYU; winner vs. #2 Texas A&M

Under last year's rules...

#12 South Florida at #5 OHIO STATE; winner vs. #4 Virginia
#11 Oklahoma at #6 OREGON; winner vs. #3 BYU
#10 Texas Tech at #7 Alabama; winner vs. #2 Texas A&M
#9 Ole Miss at #8 Georgia; winner vs. #1 INDIANA

My proposal...

#12 South Florida at #3 OHIO STATE
#10 Oklahoma at #4 OREGON
#9 Texas Tech at #5 Alabama
#8 Ole Miss at #6 Georgia

Then the 4 winners join #1 INDIANA, #2 Texas A&M, #7 BYU, and #11 Virginia, in a reseeded quarterfinals.  So assuming the favorite wins...
#1 INDIANA vs. #11 Virginia
#2 Texas A&M vs. #7 BYU
#3 OHIO STATE vs. #6 Georgia
#4 OREGON vs. #5 Alabama
