Title: November 1,S.O.C. - Week 11, The Calm Before the Storm
Post by: MrNubbz on November 01, 2025, 06:33:00 AM
Mornin' all, coffee is on - with the first College Football Playoff rankings coming next week, this seems to be the calm before the storm.

Where will the upsets come from? Can Penn State screw up Ohio State? Who will survive the Texas vs Vanderbilt showdown? Who will stay alive for the CFP in the Oklahoma vs Tennessee battle? No real iconic match-ups,no doubt there will be a few surprises tho

In the BIG it's the University of Spoiled Children vs the Bugeaters @ 7:30 on NBC,could be a 1 possession game. USC has been in and out of the AP Top 25 poll as it struggles with consistency. Nebraska is consistently bad against ranked opponents.

No. 2 Indiana at Maryland -- 3:30 p.m. on CBS.Indiana will look to keep rolling and maintain its unblemished record as it travels to Maryland. The Hoosiers are also searching for their second-straight 9-0 start under coach Curt Cignetti.Might watch this game

Vanderbilt Commodores (+2.5) at Texas Longhorns might be with out Arch Manning with a concussion. Texas will have its hands full against a very good Vanderbilt squad. At 7-1, Vanderbilt has already exceeded expectations this season and notched victories over three ranked squads.

Oklahoma Sooners (+3) at Tennessee Volunteers - the loser leaves town as both have 2 loses,Sooners are 1-2 over their last three contests. Sooners' QB John Mateer hasn't looked as dynamic since coming back from surgery on his throwing hand in late September; Volunteers' QB Joey Aguilar seems to get better every week

Penn State at No. 1 Ohio State -- noon on Fox,border battle, ninnies got nothing to lose and will go all in. A 3-4 record, fired coach and an injured quarterback later, the Nittany Lions are just trying to keep their heads above water. The Buckeyes, on the other hand, are 7-0, and have their sights set on winning another national title.

Georgia Bulldogs (-7.5) vs. Florida Gators -  what Florida team is going to come out of the tunnel. That’s the  question here, because there is obviously the possibility that they’ve mailed the season in.

Morning Nubbz. The dogs have been fed and were already barking up a storm at something. With the oldest at college, the younger two want to be in different rooms, so their task will be to divvy up all the stuff today, so they shouldn't bother me too much during football.

Don't have a great feeling about the game today. Something about PSU having nothing to lose and coaches auditioning for new jobs makes me think they will be throwing everything out there. Plus Grunkemeyer is from central ohio.

Still figuring out the food scene. Wife is working so what can I make that the girls won't complain about?

wet cool morning here - coffee is good and black (like the Husker's stadium)

with the turn of the calendar to November, it's time to get some things done outside
need to wash the Vette, tune up the snowblower, take a pile of branches to the city burn pile, organize the garage, move the golf cart trailer to the back yard

6:30 PM kickoff is good

brought 3 cleaned pheasants from South Dakota last week, they might go in the crockpot or it'll be sausages & kraut later

Very dreary morning here in the Twin Cities. 40 and drizzle.

Dug out all the stadium blankets and towels for today's game. Aluminum benches get cold fast.

Already hit gym. Taking Halloween decor through the first quarter of Texas Vs Vandy. Won't take long; decorating for Christmas will take longer and will start this coming week.

As I do mostly nothing the rest of the day, here's my watch list: Texas Vs Vandy, Florida Vs Georgia, Nebraska Vs USC. Will check in on Game 7 as well. Might walk over to the sports bar if the ball game is good going into the 5th or 6th inning.

Whistle should have been blown

In high school officiating we are taught get the whistle blown. No cheap fumble. But on the upper levels with reviews they are taught to hold off the whistle to allow for reviews

Turned to Arizona State @ Iowa State which is going into halftime. Weather dismal in Ames. An undermanned ASU team is up 17-16. Just my luck as an Arizona Wildcat that right after ISU blows us out in late September, the Cyclones promptly go into the tank, having since lost to Cincinnati, Colorado, and BYU.

Miami with a personal foul on 4th and 9 off their own timeout to give SMU life

Years ago it was either @847badgerfan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=5) or @betarhoalphadelta (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=19) who made the comment that a sign of good coaching is that a team plays better as the season goes along. This always stuck with me as an apt "eye test" for coaching. Cristobal fails this test season after season. His teams, usually with more talent than their opponents, rack up their wins early before fading late.

To add an additional "eye test" that is likely just as consistent, a sign of good coaching is closing out games. Just as often as Cristobal's teams fade late, his teams can't put the game away. I'll wager that teams who play poorer as the season goes along are also the teams who can't hold leads or apply the killer blow.

We got to watch both eye tests with Miami falling apart late Vs SMU.

Dismal?  Have you been to Ames?  This is as docile as it can get late fall in that microclimate.  Ive sat through some of the worst football weather in history in that stadium

Yes. Three times. Weather-wise, Ames is a mixed bag. A gorgeous summery day when we were in the area as part of an August week in Des Moines for the Iowa State Fair. Then, two other times in years past, both in December when the state had become a continuous sheet of ice and I had to stay an extra night to let an intense blizzard pass.

Speaking of Ames and playing worse as the season moves along, Iowa State has no excuse for playing this poorly at home to an ASU team quarterbacked by a backup who isn't trusted to throw the ball more than ten yards. After starting 5-0 and working their way into the Top 15, Iowa State has completely fallen off. Down 24-19 in the 4th.

Waving off the DPI was correct. There was no contact between the safety and receiver until after the ball had gone by.

I have no idea what to make of this Gopher team.

Then I must have seen what the announcers saw- holding his jersey long before the ball got there, and holding it for about 7 yards.  Keeping him from getting to a ball that was literally inches away from being caught.

I would say Minn is at best the 9th best team in the conference.  Behind OSU, Ind, Ore,  Iowa, USC, Mich,  Wash, and ILL.

Minn is 4-2 in conference but the 4 wins are against Rutgers, Purdue, Neb and Mich St,  all at home.  Only the Neb win is a decent win,  i would say.

The 2 losses are blowout losses on the road to Ohio St and Iowa.

Downplaying how bad underwood is at this point is being blind. Using his age as a reason is an excuse. His just missed a wide open Marsh on the flea flicker and then fumbles out of the end zone for a touchback and that’s probably the 10th play of his that was awful.

I feel bad for Prime. His health issues are ridiculous to try and be a D1 coach right now.

Yeah, it wasnt close.  Even the announcers said that is called 100 times out of 100.  MSU isnt going to a bowl either way, and Minnesota is stuck with their joke of a coach who needed about 3 ref bail outs to beat an 0-9 Big Ten team

They needed OT and 3 phantom calls to beat an 0-9 team at home.  #15 is the highest reasonable ranking.

Duke's win @Clemson was their first in 45 years.

OU vs Tennessee was a great, back-and-forth game.  Equal teams.

GA Tech finally lost.

Pitt vs Stanford is just another conference game.  Of course.

injuries just continue to pile up for Michigan and Sherrone Moore continues to show his ass and prove he’s not the guy.

they will probably beat Northwestern but would not be shocked at all if they lose to Maryland on the road and I’m half expecting it, and Ohio State is going to bury them in Ann Arbor. Booked a flight and had tickets to the game but I’m not even going to waste my time and bother going this year. Too cold and why waste time and money watching Moore get outclassed and out coached by Day.

Shirley, there must be some mathematical elimination at this point, along with some amusingly far fetched scenarios for the teams that are just barely clinging to their slim mathematical possibilities.

🥱 Oh FFS why don't you just go ahead and say "No Way" and get it over with. tOSU Oline is nothing like M*s,hell your second best back racked up 165 yds saturday nite. Not sure if out whole stable of RBs garnered that in one outing. Of course it will rain/sleet grounding Ryan Air,I'm just going to tune up the snow blower and get ready for the inevitable

FWIW, the short story on mathematical eliminations is that Indiana picked up league win #6 while Ohio State and Michigan each picked up league win #5. Since Ohio State and Michigan play each other and they can't both lose that means that the CG participants will be 6-3 or better which means that the teams with 4+ league losses are officially eliminated. Say goodbye Terps, Knights, Lions, Badgers, Spartans, and Boilermakers.
