Title: Week 9 S.O.C. Rebels venture into the Land of the Dirt Burglars
Post by: MrNubbz on October 24, 2025, 08:16:30 AM
Games of the week

Tonite should be a decent contest, Cal takes on VTech in Blacksburg. In a weird twist though CAL is 5-2 while VTech is 2-5 the Hokies are favored by 6 after losing two straight :017: . Coming off a 21-18 home win over North Carolina, Cal kicks off the weekend as one of eight teams in the 17-school ACC with no more than one conference loss.

I might just watch that game tonight.  While texting my buddy that was a pitcher for the Golden Bears.

We shall see how the afternoon pans out with a 12:30 tee time.

No. 3 Texas A&M at No. 20 LSU,7:30 pm - the Tigers are facing yet another excellent defense in A&M, and being at home in Tiger Stadium at night will not be enough to overcome the rolling Aggie program

No. 22 Texas at Miss. St.,4:15 - The Horns have won the past two games but will have to be better if they want to stay in the SEC race. In their last game, the Longhorns won against the Kentucky Wildcats, 16-13. Against the Florida Gators in their most recent contest, the Bulldogs lost 23-21.
Huh?  The Ags are 37th in total defense and 61st in scoring defense.  Their offense is the strength of the team this year.

As for the Horns, well... it could be a long trip back from StarkVegas.  It'll be low scoring and hopefully Texas can pull out the win.

It's the kind of stuff the mediots and talking heads repeat year after year because it was once true.  They've said the same thing about the Texas offense being good this year and Steve Sarkisian being an offensive guru, with all evidence to the contrary.

My oldest brother(RIP) had a cherished 1952 Stevens(I think they merged with Savage Arms) 410 over/under that my dad had when he passed. How the oldest bro got it not sure but the old man bought it for another brother who didn't take up hunting like the rest of us.Years ago i had taken it to a county gun show to get appraised(before the internet). Here he found in research catalog a '52 410 side by side and it went for around 500.00 back then and the guy estimated the over/under easily was worth more as there were fewer of them made & he couldn't find a listing on it.Any way I also asked him about why the fire arms company switched from wood to plastic stocks/slide grips. Simple the Korean war was going on and the wood was going into military fire arms(preferred). So this simple quirk made them worth more even though they weren't any better - at least at that time

So years before my oldest brother passed away we had a handshake agreement if anything happened to him I would get  the 410 o/u. well because he went in and out of consciousness his last few months I didn't even think of it. But his 2nd wife didn't get the message she gifted it to her son my brothers step son so not blood related :banghead:. So this nice gun that I got my first game with had been passed around amongst the brothers ends up in the hands of someone it had no significance to.

We never said anything as my SIL she is a kind soul and went thru a lot with his death after almost 30 yrs of marraige. But it was an unfortunate outcome for my bro/SIL and the gun that had been in the family since dad bought it new

That sucks.  And I know what it's like.

My grandfather had a lot of guns.  And I mean, a LOT of guns.  Most of mine, I inherited from him.  I'm the only boy on this side of the family that cared to own them.  My brother doesn't care and has never hunted for anything, ever, and my sister definitely doesn't care.

My grandfather had already listed out who was going to get which guns, but then briefly before he passed, he was not quite fully there mentally anymore, and he just started handing out the guns to whoever was there.  So two of my cousins who are VERY liberal anti-gun guys, ended up taking a couple of the more interesting and more valuable ones.  And they didn't actually want them so they just gave them away or something, I still can't get the truth out of them.

They were very sentimental to me since I'd been hunting and shooting with my granddad many times, the only one of 7 grandchildren who ever did.  So I was pretty disappointed.  If those guns had meant something to my cousins it wouldn't have bothered me, but if anything, they only felt distaste.  They never even explained to me WHY they accepted them, if they had no desire to hold onto them.

Anyway, luckily my dad figured out what was happening and put a stop to it before the entire collection was lost.  The anti-gun cousins only ended up with a couple or three, thankfully.  I have all the rest.

QBs have really inflated their comp % and cut way, way down on their INTs in general, but has there been a larger sport-wide improvement over the last couple of decades as FG length and accuracy?!?  Kickers today are AMAZING.  And don't forget, they narrowed the uprights in 1991.

Yes,  for a while CUSA was taking anybody.

All started from the fallout when Tex and Ok left the Big 12 for the SEC.  Then the Big 12 took 3 schools from the AAC.  Then the AAC took 6 schools from CUSA.  Then the SBC took 3 schools from CUSA.

At that point,  CUSA was down to 5 teams.  They grabbed FBS indies Liberty and NMSU and grabbed a couple FCS schools from Texas.  A couple years later,  they grabbed Delaware and Missouri St. From FCS.  This got CUSA up to 11 sxhools.  Then LA Tech just announced they will be leaving CUSA for the SBC in 2027.  So now CUSA will have 10 teams in 2027 unless CUSA adds somebody else.

That was a bad loss for Cal. Honestly, a pretty gross game on all fronts, but Cal has modest goals for this season and tech does not.

And I was chuckling at the north Texas game. Charlotte is terribly bad, and I think the mean green wants a little attention for the work it’s doing.

Purdue and Rutgers both moving the ball at will.

But the Purdue defense stopped a 4th down conversion attempt inside their own 10 yard line, and forced a [missed] FG attempt on another drive, while turning their two successful drives that got to 1st-and-goal situations into 10 points...

So 20 minutes in, and the Boilers are up 10-0.

Maybe they can turn this into their first conference win while start my drive to LAX in another hour or so...

That isn’t a very good Cal defense. It’s also a little unfortunate. That tech has never quite been able to figure out a way to maximize their quarterback.

When he gets going on the ground, it’s a real problem. But it hasn’t happened enough.

More than any other FBS school, Cal losses are the tree falling in a forest that almost nobody hears. Seriously, Justin Wilcox and Cal are made for each other. There's no other coach that would demand so little from a university that doesn't rally crowds to the game or offer much of any backing or resources. And no other university would continue a commitment to Wilcox's sustained mediocrity.

Going on nine seasons in Berkely, Wilcox is 47-53. Cal's modest goals are to go bowling every other season. Wilcox doesn't have to win much to keep his gig and winning season at a rate of every other year allows the university and the athletic department enough justification to avoid the difficult work of finding another coach (and the money for it) - a coach who would demand upgrades to the infrastructure and priority treatment from the university.

I'm definitely on board with Georgia Tech.  I could be wrong, but they feel like a nice one off.  I love a good one off college football team, where things come together.  I know King is a transfer, but I don't think they are a full on portal team like Indiana

A lot of Vandy coaches could have done better if they were allowed to admit Diego Pavea, let alone keep him.  I don't dislike them, but this isn't like James Franklin winning 8 games there.

Indiana, I'm now out on.  Cignetti is a great coach, and way to embrace the era, but lets not act like this is "Indiana".  It's a well paid for team, and the calls they were getting today is laughable.  I never thought I'd say this, but I hope Penn State upsets them

I'm definitely on board with Georgia Tech.  I could be wrong, but they feel like a nice one off.  I love a good one off college football team, where things come together.  I know King is a transfer, but I don't think they are a full on portal team like Indiana

They got drives extended by phantom late hit/PI calls.  They had a legit late hit call by them picked up.  I mean its not like they won because of the refs, they dominated.  But this ain't Indiana.  This is a helmet team wearing a non-helmet at this point

We didn't know what we had with the traditional ACC

I have a Maryland fan buddy, and he is just out across the board.  He has clarified that its not that they are "too good" for the Big Ten, but even in basketball he can't care about playing MSU and Purdue like he used to with Duke and UNC

Difference is Indiana was going to steamroll UCLA no matter how fireable the officiating in Bloomington was today. The head official fired this week by the SEC had heavy-handedly swung the game in Georgia's favor. NINE of his staff's flags/reviews were deemed incorrect. Not since 2009 has the SEC suspended (much less fired) an official.

Meanwhile, watching Texas near halftime Vs Mississippi State in Starkville. 24-14 Miss St leads. For some reason, because the audio sounds inverted on the SEC Network broadcast, with the crowd and cowbells louder than the announcer's commentary, the broadcast sounds like a high school game airing on a community-access channel.

Oklahoma got fairly screwed today, but the officials already handed them the Auburn game, so I'd call it a wash.  But SEC officiating has been BRUTAL this year.

The Indiana-UCLA game was the first Big Ten game that seemed lopsided to me.  I've seen other games where they seemed inept as far as constant conferences, and some missed calls, and bad reviews, but today was both awful and horribly slanted pro-IU.  Again, didn't matter, but I can't believe I'm at a point where I kind of hope PSU beats the shit out of them.  They are like the early 2010s Lions or same era Brewers.  Teams that had been horrible forever, and then got good with the biggest group of assholes imaginable.  Never thought a good Detroit Lions or Milwaukee Brewers team was hateable, but here we were.  I'm there with Indiana football

Iowa defense has really stepped it up since giving up 28 to Rutgers.  In addition to shutting out Wisc and giving up only 3 points to Minn,  the defense played well against Indiana and Penn St.

Well the 2 announcers, and the official they brought in, clearly didn’t think so.
But the egregious PIs that were both MSU 1st downs, and weren’t called.   So bad.
Haynes last TD, big time holding.

But it’s not just this game.  I am flipping channels and I’m seeing horrible officiating in every game.
Wisconsin had 2 clear first downs taken away when they were moving the ball into Oregon territory.
Hell, on one, Fickell threw the challenge flag and the replay showed the guy was almost 2 yards past the line to gain, and they didn’t reverse it.  The announcers and broadcast official were actually apoplectic because it was such a bad call.

Holding isn’t a thing I guess because the Haynes play there was a hold and there was an absurdly blatant one against MsU right in front of the official. The play ended up amounting to nothing but it makes you scratch your head and ask why some of these aren’t called, especially with the recent things with refs and gambling.

I get what the numbers say when you cut it to one touchdown.  that the conversion rate on two-point conversions is over 50%, so you go for two, and if you get it, the next time you score an extra point wins it.  and if you don't get it, you go for it the next time and even going one for two is below average. I do not get it at all in this situation where you also need a field goal. But I also don't think either Moore or Smith are capable in their current roles

Deion might have been better in a prior era.  Hes a shitty Xs and Os coach, and being a good recruiter in the NIL era is pretty useless.  I felt the same way about Mel Tucker. I think he may have been okay, obviously ignoring the major issues, but NIL killed him.  there is no such thing as a great recruiter anymore, kids are going to follow the money. I think if you win enough, you might get some kids who give you the benefit of the doubt if the money is close

If someone wants to look into a player throwing games, look at Miss State's QB.

Inexplicable INT with seconds to go in a tie game vs Florida when already in FG range.
Inexplicable unforced fumble with seconds to go in a tie game vs Texas when at the edge of FG range.

The pass you could blame the play-call, but we don't 100% know what the play-call was.
The fumble has no other possible explanations, other than being a goofy-ass choke-artist loser.

Baseball isn’t as simple in my opinion. Different batters have different heights and different stances and strike zone adjusts slightly for different batters. I’m sure there’s a way to adjust, but I’m more old school in baseball. Football the line to gain and measurements could easily be simplified.

They could just scan each player's stance and have it when each batter comes up to the plate.  When a guy gets called up, that would be part of the process, like getting the name sewn on the uniform, getting the official photo taken, signing the contract, getting your stance scanned, etc.

The Horns' upcoming game against Vanderbilt on 11/1 in Austin will be Texas' first home game since 9/20 and the first home game of the entire season against a P4 team.  So far only road games @Ohio State, @Florida, @Kentucky, @Miss State.  And then of course the neutral site game at the Cotton Bowl vs. OU.

Sounds like Arch Manning is going to be out with a possible concussion.  I'm assuming he'll miss the Vandy and Georgia games at the very least, maybe Arkansas too.

We'll see how it goes. All of the folks calling for him to be benched are going to get their wish.  The backup is the one who threw the game winner in OT yesterday.

He's struggling trying to be both a HC and OC at Texas.  If he wants to leave then there's no point in trying to keep him around.  But honestly I don't believe anybody wants to hire him as a HC in the NFL, sounds like bullshit to me.

So, lemme get this straight. LSU athletic director Scott Woodward hired Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M and also Brian Kelly at LSU, both were fired and the schools have to pay $130 million in buyouts.

And he still has a job.

This is absolutely insane that some of these AD’s aren’t held accountable for their poor decisions.
Great find, this country has lost it's facking minds, generations of those families won't have to work - even around their yard. And in truth is in fact ill gotten gains. Hope CFB somehow puts the brakes on and can start by throwing the old deck of cards out called the NCAA.

It depends the kind of coaching you’re looking for, I think.

it also asks an interesting question about career and age. Like, do they have access to the versions of themselves that made Cincinnati, Central, Michigan and Vanderbilt good? Or is that no longer the case?

Even though it makes every Domer and ND fan cringe every time they hear it, Kelly is the all-time winningest coach at Notre Dame (measured just by total wins). While he never took them to the promised land, his teams were routinely very good. That was a substantial upgrade from the three coaches that preceded him (which is how he got to all those wins--that and the fact that seasons are longer now than they used to be).
