Title: All-Decade Team: 1980s
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on October 08, 2025, 07:47:20 PM
Let's try something.  Yes, this belongs in the offseason, but whatever.

This is not 'Nam, this is bowling, there are rules.
WHAT TO DO:  You quote the post above yours and add ONE and ONLY ONE player to the team.

After 25 posts, the thread is closed and we have an all-decade team.
Got it?

has to be Herschel Walker at RB1 and that's the only valid answer, then debate rages at RB2 but I'm taking Barry Sanders.

Barry was a better RB and had the greatest single season any RB has ever and will ever have- but Herschel was 1,600+ yards and 15+ TD's for 3 years straight in the SEC- true frosh to jr year- just banging out All-American seasons. you doing an all-decade team- that matters. Barry had one insane year- Herschel Walker had 3 awesome years.

Walker played 3 years, ending in 1982.

Here in 2025, no other SEC RB has run for as many yards, even in 4 seasons.  43 years.  An extra season.
No one has come within 500 yards of him (490, specifically).

It's obscene.

If only he had another season with 100+ carries that we could look at.....
105 carries, 5.7 ypc

As a backup, he had normal stats.
So no, we do not know that.

I already made my pick but I would like to nominate Andre Tippet,  who played DE, and was a consensus all-American for Iowa.  Even though he is most famous for being an NFL hall of famer at LB.

I thought about him, but man, they didn't really play much of a schedule. They lost to just about every ranked team they played.

Ware only had that one great year, so he's out.

The 80's were definitely the decade of the RB's --- QB offerings are slim pickens.

Wisconsin had 3 first round picks in 1984.

Darryl Sims, Al Toon, Richard Johnson

Plus 8 more drafted.

They were 7-4-1.
Title: Re: All-Decade Team: 1980s
Post by: utee94 on October 09, 2025, 12:45:40 PM
On offense the Horns were a total mess in the 80s.  There were a (very) few elite level defensive players.  These are probably the only guys I'd nominate for an all-decade list.

Kenneth Sims, Defensive Tackle: Lombardi award in 1981, overall #1 NFL draft pick 1982
Jerry Gray, Safety: Two time Consensus All American 1983, 1984
Tony DeGrate, DL: Lombardi winner in 1984, consensus All American 1984

And then maybe Eric Metcalf as a kick return specialist.

To be honest I hardly know anyone from the 80’s. I didn’t watch CFB at all. Nobody in my immediate family did.

I always heard Ray Childress was a beast on the field. He had a productive NFL career. Outside of that I couldn’t tell you much. I heard Kevin Murray ( Kylers dad) was a helluva QB until he broke his leg.

A&M was really good from the mid to late 80’s. Total garbage before that.
Title: Re: All-Decade Team: 1980s
Post by: betarhoalphadelta on October 09, 2025, 01:18:43 PM
Because I don't know the 80s CFB very well, I just have one request for anyone who does:

If there's a Notre Dame player that's a surefire can't miss #1 pick for one of these positions...

...please identify #2 and submit them before the ND player can be added :57:
Title: Re: All-Decade Team: 1980s

Tim Brown comes to mind for the Irish. Rocket Ismail for return man (although he goes into the 90s). Todd Lyght at CB, and Chris Zorich (DT) are the others that come to mind, but DT is already filled up.

I'm disappointed that I can't find a nice, short clip of the "phantom clip" that called back the Rocket's return in the waning moments of the Orange Bowl, helping Colorado win half of a national championship. And I'm pretty sure most of you aren't interested in a 4:30 clip from Notre Dame's propaganda department. :-)

A compromise on Barry Sanders could be as the returner.  In '87, he had 2 KR TDs and 2 PR TDs.

But maybe some of you will appreciate this instead:
The Rocket at Michigan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGK8SU7qe4g)

And yes, ND was not good in the mid 1980s, but until the advent of the college football playoff's expanded format, the 1988 MNC season was among the best that any championship team ever had.

Yeah, but if you're really looking for a way to get under an ND fan's skin, remind them that in 1989, down 17-10 in the third quarter, they gave up a 3rd and 43 conversion to Miami. Miami ended up scoring a TD on that drive, burying ND's national title hopes.

Yes, and it wasn't just one bad call and the game against WVU. They beat (final AP rankings):

#7 USC
#5 West Virginia
#4 Michigan, and
#2 Miami (and there were bad calls to go around in that game, not just the phantom fumble (which, for the record, was a bad call)--that was football at the time; see the Phantom Clip noted above.) :-)

Well I'm trying my best to pick the best players for an all-decade team, not just stock it with homer picks.

Otherwise you jackwagons would already be desperately searching the internet for who the eff Rob Moerschell is.

Iowa sort of peaked in the 80s, reaching the top 10 in 5 of 6 seasons under Fry.  Also, this is incredibly low-stakes, lol.

The 80's were definitely the decade of the RB's --- QB offerings are slim pickens.

Flutie or Testaverde, I guess ??  Sheesh.
BYU had some good ones.  Jim McMahon.  Steve Young.

Also there were those that were ok in college but had pretty good NFL careers  John Elway,  Dan Marino.

Quite a few really good NFL guys.

ND sucked in the mid-80s, including the infamous 58-7 loss @ Miami (under the HS HC).
Didn’t they win the MNC in 1988?  Not sure if 1988 qualifies as “mid” 80’s, but it was sure close.

Kind of makes me wonder…how do you determine what constitutes “early, mid or late” decade?  Obviously something like 1980-1982 is early 80’s.  1984-86 is definitely mid 80’s, and 1988-1989 is late 80s. So what do you consider 1983.  Is it mid 80’s, or early 80’s. What about 1987?

John Elway was a great college quarterback who played for a bad team. His Heisman standing, for a player on such a mediocre team, shows how good he was.

He's asking that we not make a greatest all-time college list based primarily on NFL success.  I agree.

John Elway was a great college quarterback who played for a bad team. His Heisman standing, for a player on such a mediocre team, shows how good he was.

But I do think there's room for guys who were great in college but on bad teams, and then flourished in the NFL.

Ten years, divided by 3.......yields 3-4-3.  "ND sucked in the mid-80s" because they had a shit HS coach.  Then they hired Holtz and didn't suck anymore.

Early:  80-82
Mid:  83-86
Late:  87-89

Easy.  It's math.

I don't know how you do it for decades, but for age...

Early 40s: 40-44
Mid 40s: 45-47
Late 40s: 48-49

B/C you have to put off that "mid" and "late" as long as you can... I'm getting damn close to my late 40s.

To an off-campus stadium.

Kickers: Morten Andersen, Kevin Butler, Jeff Jaeger, David Tredwell, Jason Hanson.

I'd pick Butler out of those. I'm out of picks though.

Someone pick Rod Woodson out of Purdue please.

For WR I was thinking Michael Irvin or Tim Brown. I've already taken my homer pick, but Tim Brown did win the Heisman trophy (and I'm sure he got an ND bounce in the voting). That guy was good. And so was Irvin (as much as I didn't like either the college or the pro team he played for).

Anyway, I'd take one of those guys.

For the second safety spot, as much as I loathe USC, Mark Carrier would be a good choice, or Terry Hoage, but I didn't see the latter play). Woodson played CB in college, I think, and safety in the pros? I feel like a lot of those guys moved to safety after being corners in college...

Just need someone to plug them in.  Hoage was nominated earlier.  There's also Lott or Easley.

But I like our all-decade team to not necessarily be a existent, consensus-type thing.  Some alternative, worthy players + some homerism.

It's great.

I guess they "should have" won more than that one, which was from out of left field.  Thanks for the correction.

They went 33-3 from 79-81 and didn't win a NC.  Their all-time individual players would suggest more than one NC.

For Matthews? He was integral to student body right, John McCay called him one of the best lineman he'd ever seen, consensus two-time all American, and was drafted #9 overall, presumably based on his college output. That's a pretty solid for a guard.

But if you want someone else, won't hurt my feelings. I hate USC. Even more than Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan, and Alabama.

Barry Sanders is the biggest snub here, and John Elway is the next most deserving, IMO.
