Title: Purdue (0-3, 2-4) at Minnesota (2-1, 4-2) Post Game
Post by: betarhoalphadelta on October 07, 2025, 11:03:00 AM
I posted about this in the non-playoff thread, but I think this is a pretty compelling game.

Apparently the early line is Minnesota by 9.5. Not sure I buy it.

Purdue has looked a lot more competitive in their losses than most would have expected, against teams with a combined 12-4 record, two of the three currently being ranked and the other in the ORV category. I'm not sure I buy that Illinois is as good as their ranking, but USC has a hell of an offense and Notre Dame is just generally pretty good. I don't think there's any shame in those losses, and they've averaged ~25 points per game in those 3 losses.

Minnesota obv wasn't going to hang with OSU, but losing to Cal, a team that lost to SDSU and Duke, and whose only other P4 win was over 1-4 Boston College, is not inspiring a lot of confidence. They only managed 3 points against OSU, and only 14 against Cal in their other loss. Cal gave up 45 to Duke and 34 to SDSU in losses, and 24 to BC in their win. So it's not like they've got a lock down D. They scored 31 on Rutgers, but that Rutgers defense allowed IOWA, of all teams, to put up 38 points.

Statistically these teams look fairly equal, with Purdue having the slightly better offense and Minnesota the slightly better defense. But I think when you compare their stats against the strength of the competition they've faced, I don't see a 9.5 point advantage to the Gophers...

SFGopher29 is bringing his GF to this game. SFArtCollege27's BF is a Purdue engineering student. I'm used to talking crap to both sides. Minnesota hasn't looked as good as I thought they would be this year (which isn't that good, but it's better than they've looked). Purdue hasn't looked as bad as I expected them to be, though the wins haven't been there (and they've been playing good teams). I agree that a 9.5-point spread seems excessive. But I still think Minnesota gets the nod at home. I might prefer watching this game to the slow-motion wreck that will continue in Madison this weekend. (Iowa 6, Wisconsin 0--or maybe 2.)

We've got tickets to see Some Like It Hot at the theater on Saturday afternoon, but with this being a 4:30 PM PT kickoff, we should be getting home before 5, so I'll be able to see most of this one.

They're going to score all the points right in the beginning, and then have a punting contest the rest of the way.

That's a good penalty for going to see a musical on a football Saturday.

Or any Saturday, really.

First Downs: PU 25, MN 17
3rd Down %: PU 37.5%, MN 33.3%
Total Yards: PU 456, MN 262
Offensive Plays: PU 82, MN 63
Rushing Yards: PU 253, MN 30
Rushing ypa: PU 6.3, MN 1.7
ToP: PU 34:30, MN 25:30

The difference?

Penalties: PU 9-71, MN 3-20
Turnovers: PU 3, MN 1 (not counting the PU fumble on the final play)
Points missed due to RZ turnovers: PU 3, possibly 7; MN had no RZ turnovers
Points Off Turnovers: PU 0, MN 10
Final Score: PU 20, MN 27

Purdue did everything they needed to do to win this game and win it big. Problem is they also did everything they needed to do to throw that game right into the goddamned toilet.

Gophers did not deserve to win
its better to win than lose
traditionally MN does not play well on Homecoming
MN team loss to a Cal but had to travel that should not be an issue yet it is (ask Michigan)
Purdue played with more gusto and more want to than MN
Minnesota needs to wake up the OL as there is something wrong there
turnovers kill chances to win
