Title: Week 5 top-25 at a glance
Post by: medinabuckeye1 on September 21, 2025, 10:10:45 PM

I think this is a sneaky good set of games. Note that #16 GaTech, #18 Vandy, and #20 Mizzou are the only top-25 teams favored by double digits.

Things start to sort out a bit after 5 and 6.  The pastries are mostly in the bag, teams now face credible competition usually.  I figure a spread of <4 is a near pick'em, and less than 8 is a good game probably (upsets happen there about a third of the time).  Folks tend to think an upset of 7 points is a big deal when it's not that unusual.

There are two obvious "GotWs".

IMHO, Ohio State's 4-week run at #1 is in very serious jeopardy this weekend for at least three reasons:

First, I think that Washington is a pretty good team.  Vegas has the Buckeyes as a 9.5 point favorite, that is a legitimate game.

Second, I don't think that the AP Voters respect Washington nearly as much as they deserve and as Vegas does.  As only a 9.5 point dog to #1, UDub should be ranked or at least getting some votes but they aren't.  Thus, I'm thinking that if Ohio State wins by roughly the spread (say 8-12 points) the AP voters will see it as a bad thing.  Even if Ohio State wins big I don't think they'll get much credit from the AP voters for it so basically this game is one of those everything to lose, nothing to gain situations for the Buckeyes.

Third, at least one and possibly several teams close behind the Buckeyes will get a big quality win this weekend.  #2 Miami is off but #3 Penn State hosts #6 Oregon.  That pretty much hurts the Buckeyes either way.  LSU is an underdog at Ole Miss so a big win would get them a bunch of first place votes.  Georgia plays Bama so they would pick up first place votes with a win as well.

Oh, in stat-nerd Ohio State news, this week Ohio State made their 1,004th appearance in the AP Poll.  There have been 1,255 total AP Polls so Ohio State has now been in 80% or four-out-of-five of all the AP Polls ever released.

Michigan (74.3%), Oklahoma (72.5%), Alabama and Notre Dame (both 71.3%) are the next highest and none of them have quite been in 75% of the 1,255 AP Polls.

That has to at least triple the rest of the Ohio teams combined.

Indiana being ranked #11 and a  7 point favorite in Iowa City shows that Indiana might finally be getting some respect from the voters and betters?

I guess after the way  Indiana destroyed Illinois that makes sense.  But Indiana destroyed Nebraska in a similar way last year and yet people kept saying they were a weak team.   I guess the next couple games for Indy against Iowa and Oregon will either confirm they are CFP worthy or not.

Yeah, it was Nebraska and MSU that they horsewhipped last year.
