Title: Battle of Norman Ds (Week 2 SOC)
Post by: ELA on September 05, 2025, 12:21:10 PM
No Thursday games, because, NFL.

Games tonight are trash.

Week 2 is upon us. Tonight at 7:30, we have Northwestern taking on some team and Maryland hosting Northern Illinois. Both are on BTN.

Pretty full slate tomorrow too.

A little light on compelling games, but that is true as a whole, even nationally.

Michigan and Iowa face tough tests, and possibly Michigan State too.

I had typed this in last week's SoC before this one was created but it belongs here:

Oh my this is a weak slate:

#15 Michigan at #18 Oklahoma is the ONLY ranked-vs-ranked game of the entire weekend and most of the top-25 are favored by a LOT:

  • Ohio State, no spread due to playing FCS Grambling
  • Penn State -42.5 vs FI(not A)U
  • LSU -36.5 vs LaTech
  • Georgia, no spread due to playing FCS Austin Peay
  • Miami, no spread due to playing FCS Bethune-Cookman
  • Oregon -27.5 vs OkSU
  • Texas -36.5 vs SJSU
  • Clemson -31.5 vs Troy
  • Notre Dame off
  • USCe, no spread due to playing FCS SCST
  • Illinois -2.5 at Dook
  • ASU -6.5 vs MissSt
  • Florida -17.5 vs USF
  • Florida State, no spread due to playing FCS Directional aTm
  • Michigan +5.5 at #18 Oklahoma
  • Iowa State -3.5 vs Iowa
  • SMU -2.5 vs Baylor
  • Oklahoma -5.5 vs #15 Michigan
  • aTm -32.5 vs Utah State
  • Ole Miss -8.5 vs Kentucky
  • Bama -34.5 vs UL-Monroe
  • Tennessee, no spread due to playing FCS Directional Tennessee St
  • Indiana -35.5 vs Kennesaw State
  • TxTech -48.5 vs Kent
  • Utah, no spread due to playing FCS Cal Poly

Interesting that the B1G is involved in nearly all of the decent games this weekend.  M/OU and IA/ISU are the headliners but IL/Dook is decent.  The only other single-digit point spreads for top-25 teams are ASU/MissSt, SMU/Baylor, and Ole Miss / Kentucky.

Mrs. 847 wants to go boating tomorrow, so we'll do that and then watch the Badgers at 3:30. No cooking tomorrow as we'll eat lunch out on the water somewhere while also catching some of the early games.

Then the next day she wants to hit the clubhouse and watch NFL Sunday. Fine by me. I'll just drink my way through it. It's a good atmosphere and they have good food and drink specials, on top of the 15 percent off we get as members. We always see friends there.

Playing BC, so I might make a chowder.  Certainly won't be clam.  Thinking maybe just a simple potato.  The bigger question is whether I can convince my wife to bake us some sourdough bread bowls

Is on3 a reliable source?  Anyway, here are the top-10 most watched games according to them (https://www.on3.com/news/college-football-tv-ratings-top-10-most-watched-games-week-1-2025-north-carolina-ohio-state-texas/):

So Fox dominated the noon slate with the big top-3 game from Columbus but ABC took over after that.

Psst:  @FearlessF (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=10) , Bama's AP Poll appearance streak is in serious jeopardy.

Psst:  @FearlessF (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=10) , Bama's AP Poll appearance streak is in serious jeopardy.
More on this:

Nebraska is far-and-away the all-time leader in AP Poll appearance streaks with a string of 348 consecutive weeks in the AP Poll from 1981-2002.

It was thisclose to being even longer.  The Cornhuskers started the 1981 season at #6 and dropped to #7 before playing a game.  Then they lost at Iowa by a FG and dropped to #17.  A home win over FSU got them up to #15 but then they lost at home to Penn State by 6 and failed to appear in the AP Polls released on September 28 and October 5 but by October 12 they were back at #19 after blowout wins over Auburn and Colorado.

The thing is that Nebraska's two early losses weren't bad in retrospect.  Iowa finished 8-4, BigTen Champions, and #18.  Penn State finished 10-2 and #3 and, for their part, Nebraska finished 9-3 and #11 (the third loss that season was to NC Clemson in the Orange Bowl).  Nebraska was ranked in every poll from 1978-1980, only missed one in 1977, and was ranked in every poll from 1970-1976.  As impressive as Nebraska's streak is, it was VERY close to being 11 years longer.

Alabama's current streak is 280 consecutive appearances starting with being #24 in the 2008 preseason poll.  This is the longest active streak and the second longest of all-time trailing only the Nebraska streak discussed above.

The second longest active streak and 10th longest of all-time is Georgia with 133 consecutive AP Poll appearances starting with being #15 in the 2017 preseason poll.

The third longest active streak and 42nd longest of all-time is Ohio State with 81 consecutive AP Poll appearances starting with being #6 in the September 27, 2020 AP Poll.  Ohio State missed the September 13 and September 20, 2020 AP Polls only due to being ineligible due to the B1G's COVID pause.  Ohio State has appeared in all 81 polls since then (never lower than #11) and immediately prior to that Ohio State appeared in 132 consecutive AP Polls from 2012-2020.  Ie, but for the COVID Pause, Ohio State's current streak would be 215 (132+2+81) which would be the #2 active streak and the third longest of all time.

Oregon and Penn State are tied for the fourth longest active streak with 49 consecutive appearances dating to the September 11, 2022 AP Poll.

Notre Dame has the sixth longest active streak with 41 consecutive appearances dating to the November 6, 2022 AP Poll.

Texas has the seventh longest active streak with 39 consecutive appearances dating to the November 20, 2022 AP Poll.

Ole Miss has the eighth longest active streak with 35 consecutive appearances dating to the 2023 preseason AP Poll.

Tennessee has the ninth longest active streak with 21 consecutive appearances dating to the December 3, 2020 AP Poll.

Clemson has the tenth longest active streak with 20 consecutive appearances dating to the 2023 Final AP Poll.

Miami, FL has the 11th longest active streak with 19 consecutive appearances dating to the 2024 preseason AP Poll.

Indiana has the 12th longest active streak with 14 consecutive appearances dating to the September 29, 2024 AP Poll.

SMU has the 13th longest active streak with 13 consecutive appearances dating to the October 6, 2024 AP Poll.

South Carolina has the 14th longest active streak with eight consecutive appearances dating to the November 10, 2024 AP Poll.

Arizona State, Illinois, and Iowa State are tied for the 15th longest active streak with seven consecutive appearances dating to the November 17, 2024 AP Poll.

No other streaks began prior to 2025.

White Castle is pretty gross. But it's nostalgic. So I appreciate it for its grossness.

I was in Vegas with my wife and they now have a White Castle on the strip. So I took her. She'll never go again :57:

Hayden's hawks had 28 passing yards in the game

HAWKEYES STUN HUSKERS IN OPENER
There weren’t many among the 60,160 who jammed Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium who thought they were watching a matchup of the eventual Midwest entries in the Rose and Orange Bowls. There probably weren’t a whole lot more who thought Iowa would avenge a 57-0 slaughter the Hawkeyes had suffered in Lincoln the year before.

However, Iowa took advantage of excellent field position to jump to a 10-0 first-half lead, then held on to win a 10-7 stunner over the seventh-ranked Huskers.

The Hawkeye defense held the Huskers to their lowest total offense output of the season – 234 yards – and stopped the Nebraska offense three straight times in Iowa territory after Roger Craig’s one-yard TD had pulled the Huskers within 10-7 early in the final period. NU was stymied in the fourth quarter by a missed 30-yard field goal, a fumble, and Lou King’s diving interception, which secured Iowa’s victory with 39 seconds remaining.

In the first half, the Hawkeyes capitalized on a short punt and an interception to set up a two-yard TD run by Eddie Phillips and a 35-yard field goal by Lon Olejniczak. Meanwhile, the Huskers were held scoreless through three quarters for the first time since 1973 and didn’t get out of their own territory until late in the second period, partly because of Iowa punter Reggie Roby’s 50-plus yard average.

NU quarterbacks Mark Maurer and Nate Mason completed only 8-of-18 passes for 81 yards and rushed 12 times for minus-2 yards.

Iowa used its upset win as a launching pad to defeat such teams as UCLA, Michigan and Purdue and post its first winning season since 1961.

Should be a glorious day in Columbus. Not cooking anything - I'm always on the search for things that everyone in the family likes and somehow charcuterie has made the cut. So I've got an assortment of meats and cheeses, plus some crackers and fig jam. I'll pick up some berries and nuts from the store, as well as some olives. I'm the only one that will eat the olives though.

About to go light up the smoker and get the pork butt ready to go on.  I'll be cooking it all day today, but won't serve until tomorrow for my son's 16th birthday family get-together.

But while I have the smoker going today, I'll throw on a couple of beer-butt chickens and maybe some sausage, to snack on for the football games.

And then of course tonight, Michigan playing in Norman.  Go Blue!

I usually go hot & fast on pork butt... 350-375 and you can start it the morning it'll be served.

Tonight I'm going to fire up the grill for some whole branzino. First time trying to serve it to the kids.

Then shut the vents to try to get the grill off, reload with more charcoal and some hickory chunks, and fire it right back up again to throw a brisket on about midnight for tomorrow.

A little under the weather today. Not sure what we're going to do yet. Probably not the boating thing though.
That sucks

My allergies over the past week have been the worst they've ever been.  It's only been in the low 70s, but I've had to shut the windows and turn the AC back on to get ANY relief.  Have to coach some fall baseball this morning, so it's only getting worse.  And the kids want the fire table out for the MSU game tonight

internet rumors around that Michigan's budding stud TE Marlin Klein may be hurt and missing the game. that is a HUGE blow to Michigan if true. Klein is a devastating run blocker and was developing a nice chemistry with the young true freshman QB.
Per MGO

Article out today saying it's not Kline, it's Morgan. Lower leg injury in practice. Sounds like Yoder, shame on all of us for listening, got the wrong player.

All better now.

Just landed in Las Vegas. 8am local time. Heading to the Strip to watch Iowa @ Iowa State in a Scottish pub near the Flamingo.

Will be at this evening’s UCLA @ UNLV game while everybody else will be watching Michigan @ Oklahoma.

He's not the problem.  He hasn't been "on," but  a dropped TD, a dropped long-play and 100+ yards of penalties is the problem.

Bryce looks like the only dude on offense who came there to play. And he's a true freshman. kinda sad state of affairs for the rest of those bums.

time to hit the portal this off-season and get Bryce some real WR's. maybe a couple OL's too while were making a wishlist.

tough and not wise to speculate, but I think you're right, and its conceivable he piped up and said something which rubbed the RB the wrong way.

don't need him. just need real WR's. maybe an OL or two. And a better play caller. maybe even a new head coach.

Bryce is a DUDE. need the rest of the offense to catch up to him.

I feel like they deserved that shanked FG.

you're on the road, it's 4th and 1 in their territory. Go for it. I don't know- maybe use your 6'4" freak QB's legs to try and pick up the 1st down so you can keep the drive going and try to get 7?

But they recruit and sign Semaj Morgan outta high school. Lmfao.

I usually go hot & fast on pork butt... 350-375 and you can start it the morning it'll be served.
Oh I could have cooked it faster.  It's almost impossible to mess up pork butt.  But I had all day so I took it.

Currently resting and almost ready to pull.  Then I'll store overnight and it'll meld and be even better tomorrow.

Beer can chickens were delicious.  Great weekend.

yeah so this is a WAY DIFFERENT front 7 with Jaishawn Barham.

Jimmy Rolder is a JAG. Solid player. Nothing more. Barham completely changes the dynamic of the front and disrupts o-lineman in a way Rolder just flat out can't. He changes the math up front for the entire unit.

UCLA is fielding the worst offensive line i’ve seen since the Charlie Weis OLs that ended his tenure at Notre Dame. Ball is snapped and within a second 2 and 3 UNLV defenders are in the backfield.

UNLV up 23-3 on UCLA to start the 2nd half.

Eh, I don't think so.

For one thing, I usually think of a "trap game" as one immediately before or sometimes immediately after a big game. For Ohio State the OhioU game is after Grambling and before a week off.

Secondly, I think it is great that the Bobcats beat the Mountaineers because now there is no excuse to sleepwalk on them.
