Title: What-If Season Simulation (1975)
Post by: ELA on September 04, 2025, 12:48:58 PM
I've always done the What-If Bowl lineups, as to how the bowls would likely slot based on prior bowl lineups.

As I did last year, now that any semblance of college football as we all learned to love it was gone, I figured each season I would simulate a season alongside the actual season, using SP+

So it will be the teams' present abilities, but using the prior year schedule, conference affiliations, and bowl lineups.

I'll roll a dice and based on that jump back 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60 years.

Last year it came up 2, so I decided to reroll if it came up 2.  It came up 5, so 1975 it is.

First year Big Ten allowed a second team to go to a bowl.  When #4 Michigan blew a 14-7 lead against #1 Ohio State at home in the final 3 minutes, it cost itself the Rose Bowl, but went to the Orange Bowl

There they lost to #3 Oklahoma.  But when #2 Texas A&M got smoked by Arkansas, and #1 Ohio State was upset by #11 UCLA in the Rose Bowl, Oklahoma won the national title.

Also at the height of the "Big 2, Little 8", when it was really just the Little 2, Littler 8".  Michigan went 1-1-2 in non conference play, tying pretty bad Baylor and Stanford teams, before stomping through the Big Ten.  And then OSU couldn't beat #11 to win a national title.

Purdue in 1975 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_Purdue_Boilermakers_football_team) played 8 Big Ten teams and one now-Big Ten team (USC), along with ND and Miami (OH).

Purdue's current team against the current rosters of the teams they faced? I'm guessing your simulation will project them at 2-9. Strong likelihood of beating Miami (OH), and moderate chances against NU and IU. Get clobbered by the rest of the schedule.

From 1970 through 1980, the Big 10 won just one Rose Bowl. Only OSU and M played in it. OSU leads M with 4 losses in a row to M's 3 losses in a row.

MSU was the 3rd best team that year, going 7-4.

But they beat both Miami(Ohio) and Notre Dame, both of whom finished in the top 15.  Got thumped by both OSU and Michigan.  But had a couple of stupid losses to Illinois and Purdue back to back midseason, after reaching #15 in the polls

And then OSU couldn't beat #11 to win a national title.
Just to clarify, Ohio State did lose to #11 UCLA in the Rose Bowl (stadium and game) but had beaten #13 UCLA in the Rose Bowl (stadium not game) on October 4 so it isn't like Ohio State couldn't compete with the PAC Champions, they beat them badly in October.  They just flat out blew it in the Rose Bowl (game and stadium).

This was Woody's last great team, possibly Woody's best team, and certainly one of the best Ohio State teams to not win a National Championship.  Ohio State's wins for the season included:

To your point, Woody won his first three Rose Bowls with each win resulting in a NC:
After that he took his Ohio State teams to five more Rose Bowls but only won one:

This is a season that Ohio State fans would love to have a second shot at.

In retrospect, it is frustrating that Ohio State somehow managed to not win an NC somewhere in 1973-1975.

The Buckeyes over-performed in 1972.  They outscored opponents 280-171 but that is only an average of 25.5-15.5 and there was a lot of fluff on the schedule.  The pulled a home upset of Michigan (they were undefeated and #3, Ohio State already had the MSU loss and was 8-1 and #9) and got to the Rose Bowl but ultimately that was probably bad for the league because realistically the Wolverines were the better team and the Buckeyes got smoked by #1 USC in Pasadena.

In 1973 the Buckeyes returned a lot and flat obliterated their schedule outscoring opponents 413-64.  That works out to 37.5-5.8 per game, yes Ohio State allowed less than six points per game.  They also obliterated a top-10 and defending NC Trojan squad out in Pasadena but only finished #2 compliments of a tie in Ann Arbor.

1974 saw the Buckeyes outscore opponents 437-129 which works out to 36.4-10.8 but they got upset in East Lansing and lost by a single point to final #2 USC in Pasadena.

In 1975 the Buckeyes outscored opponents 384-102 which works out to 32-8.5 including destroying UCLA in the Rose Bowl (stadium not game) in October but they lost a rematch with UCLA in the Rose Bowl (stadium and game) and missed out on an NC because of it.

It's also hilarious that OSU's QB won every honor over Tony Dungy, who was a better QB (by every measure) on a worse team (by every measure)

Yeah back in the 70s and 80s it was pretty common for Texas college football teams not to begin their season until mid-September.  And at UT at least, pretty much all September games were night games.

My freshman year, 1990, Texas played a road game @Penn State on September 8th, but our first home game wasn't until September 22nd.

USC literally has nothing from the mid-60s.  I don't mean it's not out there.....USC itself just doesn't have it.  I get it, it's a long time ago, but to have stats and stuff from before then and since then...ugh.

Video for schools ranges from full-length games and a wide selection to having nothing but a 3-min version of the bowl game for an entire season.
I've even found that the only video from a team's season is a silent 'coaches cam' type thing.  And not way back, but like 70s-80s, that's all that remains, video-wise.

It can be very difficult when I'm looking for a 4th-string RB's jersey number or who the punter is.

Nebraska opened the 1975 season without a number of key players, but the Huskers pulled out a 10-7 victory over stubborn Louisiana State.

NU got on the board first with a pass from Terry Luck to Bobby Thomas, a five-yard flip late in the first half. Mike Coyle’s 37-yard field goal gave Nebraska a 10-0 lead with 5:23 left in the third quarter. LSU stormed back to score just before the quarter ended, and then the two defensive units staged a fourth-quarter standoff.

The Huskers went into battle without All America Rik Bonness (injury) and four players ruled ineligible for the game by the NCAA – Jimmy Burrow, Ray Phillips, Vince Ferragamo and Dean Gissler. It was also the first time all members of the Cornhusker squad were unable to suit up, thanks to a new NCAA rule limiting the squad to 60 in suit.

While it wasn’t a high-scoring affair, Nebraska – with a new quarterback, a rebuilt defense and an offensive line that had never started a game together – proved it could win a close one, and 1975 opened on a victorious note.

This game is notable because A&M has played so few Big 10 opponents over the course of history.  I think we've only played a Big Ten opponent in the preseason like 8 times, and this may have been the last one.

The fact that aTm played in Columbus and Ann Arbor in back-to-back weeks in 1970 got me curious so I looked it up.

The Aggies played a MONSTER schedule that year.  They had four OOC games and seven SWC games.  The four OOC opponents were an easy home game against a terrible Wichita State team (they finished 0-9) then three road games all against teams that finished in the top-9:
Within the SWC they played #3 Texas, #11 Arkansas, and a TxTech team that finished almost ranked.

The Aggies actually beat LSU which is amazing considering that LSU won the SEC and aTm finished 2-9 with the only other win coming in the aforementioned game against Wichita State.  In total, aTm started 2-0 including a road win over (then) #12 LSU then lost nine straight:

What @847badgerfan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=5) shared does seem like an unusually low number of OOC games against B1G/Big11Ten/Big Ten teams.

Per that site, in their entire history aTm only has 15 games against Big Ten teams:

That 1975 game against Illinois wasn't the most recent regular season game but it was close.  They travelled to Illinois in 1976 then Michigan in 1977 and haven't played a scheduled game against a Big Ten / Big11Ten / B1G team since.

Texas A&M vs conferences 1920-2023 (https://stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/confres.pl?start=1920&end=2023&team=TexasAM&limit=50)
The only thing about that graphic is that it shows all games including bowl games.  We have not played a non-conference, regular season game vs any team from the Big 10 since the 1970's, and only 9 total in 100 years.  We have played a lot of ACC and PAC games in that same time frame, including 4 games vs Notre Dame in the last 25 years non-conference.

Doesn't that seem strange to you?

Hmmm it might be strange, but Texas rarely played the B10 as well.  Before the 2005/6 series against Ohio State, you have to go back to 1965/6 with a home-and-home series against Indiana.

Horns played a lot of SEC, PAC, ACC, and of course Big 8 teams (due to the annual OOC game against OU), but almost zero B10 teams.

Several games against PSU in the 80s and 1990, but then nothing once they joined the B10.

OCTOBER 5 POLL
Title: Re: What-If Season Simulation (1975)
Post by: FearlessF on October 07, 2025, 09:06:40 AM
Nebraska trailed stubborn Miami 9-7 at the half but rallied behind 24 second-half points and quarterback Vince Ferragamo to defeat the Hurricanes 31-16.

Miami, a team coached by former Husker assistant Carl Selmer that had taken Oklahoma to the hilt before losing 20-17 the previous week, struck for six first-quarter points on two field goals by Chris Dennis. Nebraska’s only first-half score was set up when linebacker Jim Wightman recovered a Hurricane fumble on the Miami 25. Five plays later, I-back John O’Leary scored from three yards out with 10:20 left in the half. However, the Hurricanes led 9-7 at the break after Dennis kicked an 18-yard field goal four minutes later.

Nebraska came out in the third quarter behind Ferragamo’s throwing and O’Leary’s running to score 10 points and take a 17-9 lead. In the final frame, the Huskers finally put the game out of reach, scoring on an eight-yard run by O’Leary and a 40-yard pass from Ferragamo to Bobby Thomas to make it NU 31, UM 9. Miami scored once before the final gun, making the final score 31-16.

I'm also interested in the games A&M played in Dallas.  I feel like schools did that a lot back then.  Florida played quite a few games in Tampa back in the day.

so, I can believe that Iowa upsets a couple good teams early in the season but,..................

where do they get the respect from voters to be the highest ranked 1-loss team and then the highest ranked 2-loss team in the poll?
