2025 Volleyball Thread....Go!

real matches start up this week.  I'll freely admit,  despite being a long time coach of youth VB and fan of college and olympic game of volleyball.    NIL/outrageous roster turnover through Portal and things like,...oh I don't know signing and enrolling a girl that's been playing professionally in Italy (Nebraska brought in a 6-5 OH from an Italian pro league), just really makes one give less of a shit.   Yes, Women's volleyball is having awesome growth and interest, but it's become very very hard to keep your kids from leaving for the small number of schools with $$$.   I say this as an alum of the one school that turns a profit on volleyball.  Here's your preseason AVCA Top25.
one good thing as we often talk about,  all these teams more less will play each other before we get to the end of September.    Always good OOC matches in this game.

Horns playing yet another tournament up in the Great White North.  Opening the season in Madison with games against #12 Creighton on 8/29 and hometeam #8 Wisconsin on 8/31.

The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball (4-0) capped off its weekend in Nashville, taking on No. 7 Kentucky (1-1) in the Sprouts Broadway Block Party. The Huskers pulled off their first reverse sweep since Nov. 3, 2023, against Penn State, battling back to defeat the Wildcats (24-26, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-8).

Defense ruled the match, with Nebraska hitting .221 in the match compared to the Wildcats’ .168.

Harper Murray led the Huskers with a career-high 23 kills on a .340 hitting percentage. Kentucky’s outside hitter duo of Brooklyn DeLeye and Eva Hudson caused problems for Nebraska all match, finishing with 23 and 19 kills, respectively.

Fan of the big early-season games against good opponents. Wish Texas hadn't swept the Badgers, but hopefully they learned something. Relatively young team, lots of errors that were--hopefully--the result of nerves and a lack of experience. We'll see.

MSU beating the shit out of a bunch of terrible teams

Taken 9 of 10 sets from Merrimack, Chicago State, and Evansville.  Next up?  Southern Indiana and Western Michigan, before the Kennesaw Invitational against Kennesaw State and Appalachian State.  Then their own Invitational where they welcome Binghamton, Bowling Green and SIU Edwardsville.

Then Big Ten play.  Prediction?  (0-20) 10-20

Was busy yesterday and didn't get to watch it, Horns take down #6 Stanford 3-2.  

Next up #4 Louisville in Fort Worth on Wednesday, and then #9 ASU back in Austin on 9/14.

That's 4 straight wins over top 10 teams.  This new lineup is really finding its way.  I love early season volleyball and all of the blockbuster matchups.  Next up #21 Baylor.

Well MSU finished their awful OOC schedule 10-0.  But I guess with a new coach and a bunch of transfers, they made a choice.  They did only lose 7 sets, and only one match went 5.

Big wakeup this week, opening Big Ten play on the road at Minnesota.  But aside from that, and a trip to Lincoln, the early Big Ten schedule is relatively light

After Minnesota, they host UM, at Northwestern, at Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, at Nebraska, Maryland, Iowa

So 7 of their first 9 are against the bottom 10, and the only two of those 7 that are ranked ahead of MSU are at home.  Assume losses at Minnesota and Nebraska.  But if they can split at home against Indiana and Michigan, and maybe go 4-1 against the easier 5 teams, that's a pretty decent 5-4 start in the best conference in the country.

Lay people evaluating setters is like asking the public to rank the Presidents.  

Its not credible at all.  I coached volleyball for 8 years and watch a lot of volleyball.  Id have to watch Texas' setter 10xs to form an opinion.  Isn't it Swindle?  I dont even know. 

You cant just stare at assists per set , they pass, dig, play defense, dump, serve.  Can they set the middle worth a damn, are they sky balling the pins?

I realize Penn State is in a tough place right now (v-ball) with the Setter leaving the team.  However.  losing 25-6, 15, 13  at home to Nebraska to begin that match.  that was rough.  PSU hit -.114 for the match.

all time set, match and hitting percentage lows for Penn State in the rally scoring era (since '01)

Wisconsin is on a good run right now. They clearly were not as good as the cream of the crop to start the season. Will be interesting to see if they can grow into it by the end, or if they have a brief run in the tournament until they run into the truly elite teams.

Might as well post these up.  Mich St. swept IU today to give the Hoosiers first conference loss.   Been awhile since Rutgers wasn't the last place B1G team.     It's really amazing how tOSU has completely imploded as a program the past few seasons.

Well that's okay, I made an error as well.  Texas actually won the game 3-1 in College Station last year.  But for some reason we played them twice and lost the second match in Austin, 3-2.

Nebraska lost.....a set.  First set loss since mid September v. Creighton.    Record crowd at Pauley Pavilion.    Good to hear Paul Sunderland again.  Nebraska now 15-0 in conf, 25-0 overall.

Not college, but our HS team just won states 

Our District has 32 teams in AAA.  Top 12 advance to district playoffs.

With 2 games left, our girls needed to win both to guarantee a playoff spot.  Turns out that they didn't actually need to win their last one, but they didn't know that at the time.  They were the #11 seed out of 12.  Beat the #6, #3, #2 and #1 seeds to gonto the 8 team state playoffs, where they won 3 more

When I used to be more involved,  the coaches would always grouse about the idea of doing such a thing before the ncaa, at least the coaches would.   Big 8 dropped it years ago,   sec and big east are the only larger profile conferences doing these in vball.

Not sure.  But I think it's actually good for Texas to have the chance to avenge their only two losses this season.  One down, one to go.

Yeah the volleyball team plays almost all home games at Gregory now.  Occasionally at the Moody (new basketball arena that replaced the Superdrum) but that's rare.

Creighton at Kentucky 5pm tonight espn family 
Purdue at Pittsburgh 730pm espn tonight 

Sunday
Texas  A&M at Nebraska 3pm ABC 
Wisconsin at Texas. 730pm espn

First regional final for A&M since 2001.
Creighton and Purdue have had some super close calls in this round past several years.

West coast less regional finals would be unheard of during the first 40 or so years of this sports history.

Nebraska should cruise pretty easily today, but I think Texas-Wisconsin is gonna be a nailbiter.  The Badgers aren't the same team from earlier in the season, I think this match could go either way.
