When I was a kid, my team(s, as I liked Georgia Tech then too) were almost never on TV. If the Dawgs won, we'd watch a boring Dooley 30 minute interview of the game with film. The newspaper was a real thing, the local paper would have two sports sections, one for CFB alone. It would have B&W photos of big plays, two full pages for UGA and Tech, a page for other major SEC teams, and then a page of "other scores" by irrelevant teams "up north" with a simple paragraph and box score.
The Sunday paper was a hefty thing back then. Comics, ads galore, Ask Ann, some "news", ... I got a subscription when we moved back and cancelled it after a week or so. There was nothing in it of interest to me, at all. The local paper recently moved to a building near us, I'm not sure they have longer term viability, they do push their web site which is ... unimpressive.
I think we got a color TV around 1969, it had a problem with greens. I'd adjust the color bars and contrast and rabbit ears to little avail. The fields would look blue. We got three channels and then a fourth UHF channels started up which was staticky, that is the one Jane Fonda's husband bought later and now is WTBS. I recall Channel 8 showed up as PBS at some point, it wasn't interesting to me, back then.
My Dad liked to watch Lawrence Welk, I didn't. He liked to say they didn't have TV when he was a kid, go find something to do on your own.
-
my brother and I were forced to watch some terrible TV on a 19 inch B&W at my grandparents
we didn't know how bad it was watching football on that TV, we loved it!

A thing they pick on disregards the 9 game conference slate for B1G teams. Most SEC teams play 9 P4 level teams in a season.

1. There is no such thing as P4. There's Power 2 and Next 2.
2. Is Wisconsin no longer P2? I ask because they play at Alabama this season.
-
yes, but those extra losses are not in SEC conference for the weaker teams
means better SOS and fewer losses overall in conference

Lashlee's quote is my very favorite comment on this.
'Only' 6 SEC schools winning every SEC championship since 1954 as a lack of depth.
Yeah, but
Those 6 different schools have also won at least 1 national championship since 1998.
Need I research how far you have to go back for other conferences to do the same?!?
And careful, if you want to lump in all the new realigned additions, that number leaps to 8 different schools since '98 winning NCs (UTA 05, OU 00).
Talk about depth.
.
Here's a hint: no other conference has had 6 different NC schools going back 80+ years. The SEC has done it in the last 27.
No depth.

Yeah that was weird. He called the SEC top-heavy. To me top-heavy means the power is concentrated in a very few teams, and the rest are below average as a result. In the SEC, with so many different teams winning league and national championships over the quoted span, that speaks far more to competitive balance at a high level, than to being "top-heavy."
Just a weird point to attempt to make at all, and with data that actually refutes the claim rather than supports it.

Trivia: What year did a B1G school not named Michigan or Ohio State win a NC?
Hint: most of us weren't born yet

If we're talking Legacy B10 then it was Michigan State in the mid 60s I think.
Then of course USC and Washington in the 90s and 2000s.
Edit: Oh for non-legacy there's also Nebraska and Penn State. Forgot them for some reason. Sorry.
-
Let's omit UTA and OU from the SEC, and we have these 6:
22 UGA
20 Bama
19 LSU
10 Auburn
08 Florida
98 Tennessee
cool, definitely the traditional 'haves' of the conference.
.
Let's include all 18 current B1G schools for the same exercise:
24 OSU
23 UM
04 USC
97 UNL
91 UW
86 PSU......you still have to go 12 years further back, with 4 of them not having been in the B1G at the time of their NCs
.
Original B1G teams?
24 OSU
23 UM
66 MSU
60 MIN......and that's it, in the AP-BCS-CFP era, going back to 1936.
Depth?
.
I guess Lashlee's point is that Illinois' 2001 B1G title shows depth? The Illini went 1-11 just 2 years after that. Is that depth?
Good stuff.
-
I also like to muse if the realities were reversed, how incredulous the argument would be from the B1G side. On success, on depth, on everything.
IF the B1G schools had 6-7 slots of the top 10 recruiting classes every single year.
IF B1G schools won 7 NCs in a row.
IF the B1G had 6 different NC winners in the past 30 years.
IF the B1G had the most draft picks every single year.
IF the B1G had the most 1st round draft picks every single year.
.
It wouldn't be a debate. There would be no discussion.
Yet here we are.
Funnnn.
-
Consistent schedule bitching is not the best.
-
I view the ACC as a pretty decent conference, they have two "contenduhs" and then some teams that probably are better than half the SEC.
-
Hey, if there was a rule, everyone would follow the rule. But there's not. Yet the bitching continues. The B1G consistently complains about how fast the SEC is going....on the autobahn.
Stay in the right lane and shut the fuck up.
Right?
-

For the past...idk, like 12 years, the ACC has been the traditional Big Ten: Big 2 + dwarves
Want to know another reason why ND will never join a conference?
Just look at Miami in the ACC.
Utter irrelevance.

Tale a look at the current B1G.
OSU, UM, Minnie, PSU, UNL, MSU and USC have won MNC's in the past 80 years.

Well, seven is different from six, so ....
-
Well, seven is different from six, so ....
Except if you're including the B1G newbie adds then you gotta include the SEC newbie adds, which makes it eight. Which is different than seven.
Also, this is a really pointless and dumb conversation and has nothing to do with what is good about college football. If anything it's highlighting the opposite.
-
Pointless and dumb is out metier.
I like CFB because it's weird and unpredictable and had tradition. I like the old bowl system with the "mythical" NC because it's mythical to me anyway. We now have a playoff winner.
I can recall when an unheralded UGA team went to Ann Arbor and beat might Michigan (who was pretty mediocre that year). It put Dooley on the map.
That UM team lost a lot of close games, they were probably a bit better than mediocre.

I know! It's amazing to debate which sacrificial lamb should get into the playoff as team #12 and which one should be "left out" of the slaughter at #13!
-
I like it when all 4 bye teams lose in the second round. That's fun.

W/O looking Michigan State won an NC in like '65 or '66 AraParseghian vs Duffy Daugherty tied up in a game 10-10

I ws you tubing a bit last night and came across a replay of the UGA-TCU game and chuckled, didn't watch. I don't recall the line, maybe it was 12?
I doubt we'll see another NC game with that large a line.

Only because a G5 team can never make the NCG.

What is the "best" NFL "mascot"? The above guy is kind of famous, though in reality he's pretty sedentary, and prone to breathing issues. He likes to lie on an ice bag. Lives in Savannah, had a special vehicle to bring him to games. When he dies, he gets buried in a vault inside the stadium with his "record" in bronze.
Their first mascot was a goat. Seriously. That would be interesting today.

#2 Huskers vs #1 Seminoles in the 94 Orange bowl - Nebraska, a 17½-point underdog, earned the nation’s respect and finished No. 3 in both polls, its highest final ranking since 1983.

Nebraska’s final drive started at its 43 with about 15 seconds on the clock after Barron Miles returned the FSU kickoff 23 yards. Frazier missed tight end Trumane Bell at the sideline but hit Bell on a second try over midfield for a 29-yard gain to the FSU 28. Nebraska immediately called time out as one second remained.
Bennett waited to set up for his second field goal of the game as officials cleared the field of those who thought the game was over, but his kick was wide left.

Back in the day, Tennessee just had Rocky Top 100x a game and what weirded me out most was a pre-game prayer. On the PA, for the whole stadium.
I wonder if they still do that.

The travesty.
Did they also have an icky, patriotic flyover?
-
lol, clutch those pearls
Those flyovers are a waste of taxpayer money, though.
-
UGA has tried to create "traditions" over the past 20 or so years, beyond what already existed (not much since they closed off the east end). I think they are "OK" traditions, though calling them that when they are ~ten years old is a bit ... odd.
It's also weird a bit that the famous Hedges are a Chinese import and basically thought of as weeds, by some, and Auburn has similar hedges.
Anyway, the few times I've been in the past few years have been pretty good except when I took my daughter to see them play Tech and it was colder here than in Columbus, Ohio where she lived. It was really cold, like 37°F and spitting rain.
-
Yeah, Auburn has substantial hedges....no one talks about them.
Man, rain makes the cold unbearable.

Meh, it's marketing budget and training exercise. There are much bigger fish to fry when it comes to taxpayer money.

When the Braves have some important game (not this year beyond OD and the All Star Game), the jets prep by flying circles near us, we can really hear their engines. The ASG features two F22s and a C130, the latter being a bit odd, but they are built up near the stadium. It's kinda fun watching them a bit, and I wonder how much they interfere with operations down at the airport about 10 miles south of me, but I think they don't.
The ATL runways are all E-W and we're to the north so we don't generally hear passenger jets.
The flyovers are for recruiting, imagery, and to give flight time to pilots, who have to fly for that one way or the other. One reason I stopped flying is the requirement to have 3 landings every 90 days, not an unreasonable requirement. But you end up spending maybe $80, probably more now, going to the airport, preflighting, firing it up, taxiing out, running it up, taking off, circling back for three touch and goes, and then shutting down, driving home. This is why pilots will have $100 hamburgers at times.
-
I have $100.00 burgers every time we take the boat out.

Don't they still have Rocky Top 100x a game, or after every play, whichever is greater?
As for the Minnesota band, it's been the same entrance for as long as I've been paying attention. The only change is after the move from the Humpty Dump to the New Brickhouse, they reconfigured the start and end to account for the location of the new tunnels.
