Since the Big 12 decided to no longer coordinate a conference preseason football poll, the Tulsa World stepped into the void. The World organized 16 reporters, each covering a different Big 12 team, and produced its preseason poll.

Arizona State, with eight first-place votes, was the choice to repeat as champion. Texas Tech, Kansas State and Iowa State also received first-place votes. Oklahoma State was picked 13th.

Here is the poll, with first-place votes in parenthesis and total points (16 points for first, 15 for second, etc.):

1. Arizona State (8), 241

2. Texas Tech (3), 231

3. Kansas State (3), 229

4. Iowa State (2), 200

5. Baylor, 195

6. Utah, 171
