Title: If the RB didn't get in the way all those years...
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on July 12, 2025, 04:33:08 AM
Say we got #1 vs #2 every year, instead of bowl tie-ins and especially the RB getting in the way of that......who would you think would have won the NC each year?  Knowing the bowl outcomes as an additional data point, who ya got?

1997:  Michigan vs Nebraska
1996:  Florida St vs Arizona St
1994:  Nebraska vs Penn St
1991:  Miami vs Washington
1990:  GA Tech vs Colorado
1989:  Colorado vs Miami
1988:  ND vs Miami (rematch, ND by 1)
1985:  Penn St vs Miami
1984:  BYU vs Oklahoma
1983:  Nebraska vs Texas
1981:  Clemson vs Georgia (rematch, Clemson by 10)
1980:  Georgia vs Florida St
1979:  Ohio St vs Alabama
1977:  Texas vs Oklahoma (rematch, Texas by 7)
1976:  Pitt vs Michigan
1975:  Ohio St vs Texas A&M
1974:  Oklahoma vs Alabama (OU on probation, no bowl)
1973:  Alabama vs Oklahoma (OU on probation, no bowl)
1972:  USC vs Oklahoma
1970:  Texas vs Ohio St

Pick one or pick 'em all.

If the running back didn’t get in the way, the Fullback could shine.

I'll pick 4, thanks

1997:  Michigan vs Nebraska - no brainer - Huskers had an offense.

1994:  Nebraska vs Penn St - The Lions had a great offense setting NCAA records - Huskers were just too strong in the trenches both sides of the ball.  If Warren Sapp, Ray Lewis, Dwayne Johnson and that defense playing at home couldn't stop the Huskers, the Lions would have been in trouble.  Since they didn't play the game, I think Joe Pa deserved a share and a split of the title.

1983:  Nebraska vs Texas - tough one - Horns had a great defense, played an impressive schedule, and were ranked #2 all season behind #1 Nebraska.  Everyone wanted to see this game.  Instead Osborne went for 2 in Miami after the Horns had lost to Georgia in the Cotton bowl.  There's no way I don't take the Husker's offense in this game.  They set multiple NCAA records that season.  I didn't think the Horns or the Canes could touch that Husker team.

1970:  Texas vs Ohio St - this would have left Nebraska out - Final Rankings: AP (post-bowl) #1, UPI (regular season) #3

On New Year’s Night, all the right dominoes had fallen and coach Bob Devaney’s No. 3 Huskers found themselves playing for the national title against #5 LSU in the Orange Bowl. Tagge stretched over the goal line in the fourth quarter for the deciding touchdown.
