I remember being excited to hear Alan Page speak at my brother's commencement speech (U of Minn.) around 2001 or whenever. Uh, he was terrible (at his commencement speech duties). A guy I interned with at the US Attys Office later clerked for Page. By all accounts a wonderful man. I don't hold it against him in any way. Just a buzzkill of high expectations I guess. Ken Burns was another one. Awful speech, totally flat. (at a large financial convention). I digress.

It be the homer in me, but I have to go with Pace. He was the most dominating player, regardless of position, that I ever saw play the game.
I officiated one of his HS games and saw how devastating he was there. He was also a very friendly and humble young man at the time as he was a captain for Sandusky HS and would represent his team when we had to discuss penalty enforcement's. He would smile and it was always "Yes sir, No sir, we'll take the penalty Sir." That may seem petty, but it was a refreshing change from most kids his age.
As a college player, he did not give up a sack his last two years at Ohio State. He won about every award that a lineman could win and finished 4th in the Hypeman award in 1996. I remember after playing Notre Dame, Lou Holtz stated that Pace was the best lineman playing football, not just college. Pretty high praise from an opposing coach.

Probably because Pace single-handidly blocked Notre Dame's entire defense in that 1996 game. I was actually just watching that game on YouTube the other day.

i went with pace cause i think he was just a better player (pros probably influencing my decision) but there are few players that can match jones trophy case.

Shields, imo, is the top 5 for best OL ever to play at UNL... but Pace was incredible.

With this, 72, and a few lower numbers, we've gotten to where one player couldn't have played better, but is still not getting the votes.

Wilfork is probably the best immovable object at nose I've seen.
Shields was the best pulling guard I ever watched.
Jones got a trophy case at multiple positions.
But Pace was perfect.

Wilfork was great but only started his junior season and bolted for the NFL

Yet the best story on him was that Bill Parcels, when asked which Cane he'd want, picked an underclassman DT named Wilfork, ahead of all their stars and before he was a starter himself.
