Title: UM, OSU, UW fans (MSU too I suppose)
Post by: ELA on July 30, 2018, 11:15:21 AM
Working on a project for a family wedding, without going into too much detail, what I was asked to come up with was 4 iconic plays for each of the 4 schools (the 4 schools with large alumni contingents within the family).

I need to be able to draw out the plays, so it needs to be one with film.  The other caveat is because the couple are UM alums, none of the plays can be at UM's expense.

I have some initial thoughts, but was hoping to get some input on what I'm forgetting.  I need it pared down to 4

MICHIGAN
Anthony Carter catch vs. Indiana (1979)
Desmond Howard catch vs. Notre Dame (1991)
Desmond Howard punt return vs. Ohio State (1991)
Mercury Hayes catch vs. Virginia (1995)
Charles Woodson INT vs. Michigan State (1997)
Charles Woodson punt return vs. Ohio State (1997)
Mario Manningham catch vs. Penn State (2005)
Roy Roundtree catch vs. Notre Dame (2011)

For sentimental reasons, Carter and Roundtree are almost certainly 2 of the 4, so the other two can come in between

MICHIGAN STATE
Interception vs. Ohio State (1998)
Little Giants vs. Notre Dame (2010)
Cousins to Nichol hail mary vs. Wisconsin (2011)
Jeremy Langford run vs. Ohio State (2013)
4th and Inches stand vs. Stanford (2013)
Blocked FG vs. Baylor (2014)
L.J. Scott TD run vs. Iowa (2015)

OHIO STATE
Holy Buckeye vs. Purdue (2002)
Braxton Miller to Devin Smith vs. Wisconsin (2011)
Zeke Elliott run vs. Alabama (2015)

WISCONSIN
Bevell QB scramble vs. UCLA (1994)
Jamar Fletcher INT return vs. UCLA (1999)
Lee Evans catch vs. Ohio State (2003)
Scott Starks fumble return vs. Purdue (2004)
Punt block vs. Minnesota (2005)

I like the choices here.

I'd say for UW, everything but Fletcher against UCLA. I don't remember it, to be honest.

I have to rule one out anyway, and I agree, least iconic of the 4.  IIRC UCLA cut it to 3 and had the ball, and Fletcher had a pick 6 to put UW back up 10 in the 4th and basically seal the game.

From the Michigan list, excluding duplicates from one player since the sample (4) is so small, I place the (1) Woodson INT, the (2) Howard punt return and (3) One-Second-Remaining-Henne-to-Manninghan head and shoulders above the rest.
People like Anthony Carter resurrecting that win but, given the opponent, it doesn't do as much for me. Ditto the Roundtree finish v. ND. That didn't end up being a strong opponent either.

Yeah I don't disagree, but because the Roundtree catch was the only one while the bride and groom were students, and the Carter game was attended by the bride's parents as 1 month newlyweds, I have been instructed those two should make the cut.
After that I think the Howard punt return is the obvious one among the remaining choices.

I think the Woodson INT is among the most incredible athletic feats on any list, and may be my favorite Michigan clip, but for the kind of video you're assembling, Henne-to-Manningham probably does a better job of stoking emotion. Though I suppose this assumes there will be an audio component.

Actually no.  It's a wedding favor of four coasters with the plays diagramed out.  That's why I'm leaning Manningham.  The Woodson catch broken down to Xs and Os takes away the marvel of the play.

Ah, cool project.
Yeah, unless you can produce a 3-D diagram encased in a clear epoxy puck and call it a coaster, the Woodson INT will be a let down.

Are you drawing out the plays similar to theses shirts?

My imagination or recall isn't that good.Kind of old to be insulated from reality aren't they?(https://www.cfb51.com/Smileys/fantasticsmileys/98.gif)

I think you could go Fletcher pick six vs Purdue in 1998 over Starks.

First time for jump around.

I thought about that too, but chose to keep the play where a Heisman trophy was fumbled away.

No Appy State fans present?

I like the Cardale Jones run over a Bama LB.

I also think that Orton play was the official cementing of Wisconsin as the top non-helmet in the conference.  Them and Purdue had sort of been jockying back and forth for that title since Tiller got there, with UW dipping for a couple years in like 2001 and 2002.  That play sent both programs in opposite directions.

As a third party,  I would've included a Ron Dayne run (how about the 55 yarder in the 1st) vs UCLA in that '99 bowl game, over the Fletcher INT.  That was the memory from that game.   The world's worst Rose Bowl participant asserting itself early.

If you end up with extra OSU coaster sets, I would really like having several to give out as gifts too. I'd be willing pay for shipping and other expenses to make it worth your while.

Bummer you can't have UofM on the bad end of these coasters (cause you know there are a lot that can get used.)
And seems pretty one-sided that OSU can victimized in this project, but not their #1 rival.

Or Jones running over a Oregon nose tackle. That one was pretty sweet also.

I know from an MSU perspective, the Smoker to Duckett 2001 pass and obviously the 2015 Jalen Watts-Jackson plays would make the cut.  The 1995 pass from Banks to Nigea Carter would be on the short list too.
