Title: College Football 100
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on June 19, 2025, 10:50:34 PM
Copying the NFL's 100 years team....I want to fill in players nearly all of us agree upon and then see if we can fill it out to completion.
This is college only.  COLLEGE ONLY.  Going back 100 years (1925-2024) only.  I'd prefer P4/5 only, but that's wonky before the late 70s.
Copy and add to it if you think a guy is consensus or close to it.

QB (10): Tebow, Frazier, Testaverde, Wuerffel, Young, P.Manning, Manziel, D.O'Brien, J.Daniels, J.Burrow
RB (12): B.Sanders, Dorsett, Allen, H.Walker, Griffin, Blanchard, D.Walker, Dayne, J.Taylor, B.Jackson, Gordon, R.Williams
WR (10): Fitzgerald, Hutson, A.Carter, Crabtree, D.Smith, Howard, B.Edwards, Cooper,
TE (5): K.Jackson, Bowers
T (7): J.Thomas, Ogden, Pace, Fralic, Gallery, McKinnie, Yary
G (7): Shields, Hannah, Steinkuhler, A.Taylor, Andrews, J.Parker, Kell
C (4): Rimington, Butkus?
DE (7): Green, White, Suggs, Bruschi, Bu.Smith, Br.Smith, Hendricks
DT (7): Suh, Donald, L.Selmon, Messner, Emtman, T.Rocker, Reid
LB (12): Nobis, D.Thomas, W.Anderson Jr, Kuechly, Kiner, Bosworth, Matakevich, J.Lynch, Bradishar, Posluszny, Willis, Fitzgerald
CB (7): C.Woodson, Buckley, Bly, D.Sanders, R.Woodson, Newman,
S (6): S.Taylor, Reed, Berry, Easley, Blades, R.Williams
K (2): Janikowski, Henery
P (2): Guy, Colquit
RET (2): Ismail, Rodgers
+
HC (10): Saban, Bryant, Wilkinson, Meyer, Bowden, Paterno, Osborne, Switzer, Leahy, Snyder

I was thinking Bowden and Paterno for HC, along with Osborne and Switzer.

I'd want an accuracy guy at kicker, as Janikowski is the big leg guy.  I feel like any of like 30 RBs make sense.

Alex Henery - accuracy

Paterno and Bowden belong.

Melvin Gordon belongs.

I think Marcus Allen gets forgotten.  He had THE biggest season before Sanders.

Anyone I put on there that doesn't belong?

Rockne's coaching career is sort of cut in half for this, so I'd put Snyder in.

I liked Bill Snyder a lot, and think he doesn't get nearly enough credit, in a lot of ways.

I don't envy a task of filtering College RBs into a neat list.

Ricky Williams is the best running back in college football history, so I'd probably have him on the list. :)

But yeah it's a crazy task.  It's probably similarly difficult for most positions, we just don't know all of those dudes' names the way we do RBs and QBs.

Johnny Manziel played for the Aggies . He threw for a total of 7,820 yards, 63 touchdowns, and rushed for 2,169 yards and 30 touchdowns during his college career, becoming the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012.Did a hell of a lot on average teams though i loathe the fact the Browns drafted him like Tebow great collegiate career that didn't transfer to the LEAGUE.

maybe Reggie Bush at RB and Te Ginn Jr as WR/KR
Katzenmoyer(before injury) could be in the LB discussion

We can do a separate one for mid-major, G5 teams.  Guys like Largent, Twilley, Rice, Selvie, Edwards, etc and easily fill in 100 great players.
If'n anybody wants to.
Tomlinson
Faulk
Corey Davis
Marcus Harris
Chang, Keenum, Brennan....

It feels super weird to have 3 UM guys at WR for an all-time team.
A run-first, hard-nosed, stout defense reputation over decades, no big-stat QBs in their history.....yet Anthony Carter, Desmond Howard, and Braylon Edwards have strong cases.

RB (12): B.Sanders, Dorsett, Allen, H.Walker, Griffin, Blanchard, D.Walker, Dayne, J.Taylor, B.Jackson, Gordon, R.Williams
So let's say this is our 12 'best' RBs of all-time.

Can we make a separate list with none of them, as the 12 'most talented' RBs ever?  I'm thinking of guys like Adrian Peterson and Marcus Dupree.

You guys got 10 more talent > productivity type guys (not that they're low-productivity)?
Title: Re: College Football 100

utee doesn't usually care for my opinion of anything from Texas but,....   I'd suggest Earl Campbell

as for the Big 8 - Darren Sproles

Eric Dickerson gained 4,450 yards on 790 carries to break Earl Campbell’s Southwest Conference record for yards and attempts. His 48 career touchdowns tied Doak Walker’s SMU total for career scoring. In his senior year, despite splitting time with James, Dickerson finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting, behind Herschel Walker and John Elway.[8] He was also a first-team All-American in 1982 and a second-team All-American in 1981

we're talking college only, Jake Long should be on that list for tackle way before Robert Gallery makes a sniff. Jake Long was insane level good and injuries robbed him of what should've been an NFL HoF career. Could make a great case for Steve Hutchinson at guard too.

could be homer of me- but don't think so. both those guys were stupid good.

Who are your school's top 5 all-time middle LBs?  And who are the top 5 "edge" pass-rusher LBs/DEs?

For Florida:
MLB
Brandon Spikes, Scot Brantley, David Little, Godfrey Myles/Tim Paulk (played together, people tend to prefer one over the other, both were awesome), Brandon Siler

EDGE
Alex Brown, Wilbur Marshall, Jarvis Moss, Huey Richardson, Kevin Carter

I know OSU had a ton of great MLBs back in the day and more elite edge guys recently.

One thing most people don't know is that James Laurinaitis of OSU was one of the rare 3x consensus All-Americans in history.

Ability, yes.  Production, no.

In Florida's in-house stats and in their media guide in Spurrier's early years, they counted "big plays" and he did well there.

Grant - 206 total tackles - 58 for loss of 260 yds - 26 sacks 178 yds
58.5 tackles for loss is a Husker record career record for all positions
Grant had 15 total tackles in a game vs Colorado - Husker record for DE
Grant had 20 tackles for loss in a season

Jared - had 10 sacks in a season - better than Grant

All-American (AP, FWAA, Walter Camp, Sporting News, 1997)

Yes, ILBs are MLBs.

Here are some tackle-not-sacks LBs with 150+ tackles since 2005 (p5):
Luke Kuechley, BC (thrice 150+)
Evan Weaver, Cal (twice 150+)
Ben Burr-Kirven, UW
Jay Higgins, IA
Scooby Wright, ARI (+14 sacks, dude was on crack)
Mason Foster, UW
Jordon Dizon, CU
Abdul Hodge, IA
Curtis Lofton, OU
Chad Greenway, IA
Tim McGarigle, NW
Kenneth Murray, OU
Sean Weatherspoon, MIZ
Alvin Bowen, ISU
Greg Jones, MSU
Dele Harding, ILL
Kentrell Brothers, MIZ
Lavonte David, UNL
J Leman, ILL
Scott McKillop, PIT
Eric Kendricks, UCLA (150 & 149)
Mike Taylor, WIS
.
So, as most of us know, this list is funny, because all the all-time tackles leaders were in the 70s, when teams ran the ball 80% of the time.  But these are the modern guys.  I only know of some of them.

Again, since 2005 only (sigh), P5 edge guys (mostly) with 15+ sacks in a season:
Elvis Dumervil, UL (20)
Hau'oli Kikaha, UW
Will Anderson Jr, ALA
Josh Allen, UK
Von Miller, A&M
Donovan Ezeiruaku, BC
Chase Young, OSU
Harold Landry, BC
Antwaun Powell, VT (FLA transfer)
Demarcus Walker, FSU
Whitney Mercilus, ILL
Greg Middleton, IU
Gregory Rousseau, MIA
Carl Nassib, PSU
Da'Quan Bowers, CLEM
Trent Murphy, STAN
Brandon Sharpe, TTU
Willie Evans, MS ST
.
Again, sacks weren't an official stat for a long time, but we know of 20+ sack guys from pre-2005, like Derrick Thomas, Terrell Suggs, and others, like DT Tim Ryan of USC, Bruce Smith of VT.  A human person named Kiki DeAyala had 22.5 sacks for the Horns in 1982.  Hmmph.
