The only question is which SEC team wins it all?
-
Sooners/Huskers
I'll be happy with that win
-
Horns' super would match up with UCLA should both win. Gotta get through the regional first, though. And of course the committee put one of our purple nemeses in our regional...

Still not sure why we were ranked #1. We had a brand new coaching staff, several of our players from last year were hurt before the season started. It seemed very inflated.

Big storm blew through Austin a couple hours ago, some tornadic rotation, but also straight line winds of over 80 mph. Blew down portions of the outfield fence at Disch-Falk.

Florida and Wake Forest starting off about as poorly as possible
-
Horns waste 2 on with no outs at the bottom of the 1st. 0-0 on to the 2nd.
-
Texas up 2-0 now after 3.
Florida is struggling...

Florida is struggling...
Allowing 15 hits, and committing 2 errors, ain't ideal.
I will say, it felt like the ECU pitcher was dominant, and Florida's offense still scratched some things together. But the pitching and defense...woof
-
Didn't realize UNC had never won a national title
-
Texas with some breathing room, up 7-1 after 5.

I haven’t dug in on the Pirates, but with the lower level teams, you always worry that the pitching depth will eventually get them.

Everybody's got at least ONE guy. The top teams often save him for later in the weekend, the underdogs often use him in Game1.
-
Yeah, problem was that Florida hit well enough. They just didn't have any pitching or fielding. Same with Wake Forest
-
Through 6, Texas still up 7-1. HCU started their "guy" and the Horns still managed to get to him a little bit, though multiple errors didn't help him.
Texas is saving their "guy" for tomorrow and we're already on our 3rd pitcher today but it's all middle relievers and midweek guys so far.
-
At least UK-WVU delivering. Had a couple upsets, but no good games until this one
-
Kentucky making a interesting pitching decision here
-
Huskies down to 3 outs. Horns still up 7-1 after 8.
-
7-1 final. Texas plays winner of KSU-UTSA tomorrow night. Horns lost to UTSA 7-8 in a midweek game back in March.

Focusing on teams who have cfb51 poster representatives...
Huskers and Gators in elimination games today.
Horns, Vols, Bulldogs, Sooners, Geaux Tigers, playing from the winner's bracket.
Should be a fun day of games. I'm BBQing a brisket and some pork ribs for tonight.
-
Just what the Dr. ordered for Nebraska.
Walk, HBP, Walk to load the bases up 3-1 in the 8th. Wild pitch spiked but the ricochet hit the umps mask, so runners held.
Next pitch 6-4-3, out of the inning
-
Insurance run in the bottom too

Was planning grilling, but its 52 and raining out, so Ill pivot
Oldest had his baseball games at 8 and 10 this morning. Tee ball for the 5 year old was at 12. Soccer was pushed up yo Thursday, bc the other team didnt have enough available on Saturday.
Was rough when that alarm hit at 6 am on a Saturday, but I cant remember the last Saturday where kids events were done by 1.

Was rough when that alarm hit at 6 am on a Saturday.
My furry and golden alarm got me up about 5:35. We had a 2+ mile walk done by 6:30.
My team isn't in the field for this though, so I'm watching golf instead.

Man, those days are a long ago distant memory for me.
Watching golf here. Gonna grill out later. It's only 82 here.

This Northeastern-Bethune game is outstanding.
To tie it back to my double elimination CFP proposal
-
84 here, but compared to FL I'm sure we're a little more comfortable at 60% RH.
Grilled the last two nights. Tonight it's going to be Scott Conant's pasta pomodoro recipe.

Neither is mine, but I love the event

Hattiesburg with a fun ending now
-
Finished the brisket and ribs, was all set to watch the Longhorns game on the big TV when my 17yo daughter let us know she and her boyfriend just broke up this afternoon-- her very first boyfriend. Lots of tears, a few smiles, and so Titanic is on the TV whilst I steal some glances at the baseball game on the computer, as well as lament to you good folk.
It's really tough watching her go through her first heartbreak, but she's a really well adjusted kid and she'll be fine.
Anyway, Horns up 6-3 in the 5th, but pitching and fielding getting a bit wobbly.
-
Defensive and pitching collapse, Horns down 7-6 now. Ah well at least the ladies finally beat the hated Sooners.
-
friggin Sooners
-
Friggin Roadrunners.
Now we gotta play our purple nemesis in an elimination game. The loser's bracket is tough business.

Huskers get another crack at the Sooners this morning

More than any other conference, I think. If one of them doesn't finally break through, utee94's ACC-hate will be vindicated once again.

I do wish they would keep the same format throughout. Double elimination, 4 team regionals the whole way

I actually like the symmetry of the 4-team DE regional, then the best-of-three super, then the 4-team DE bracket in Omaha, and then the best-of-three final series.
But nothing can compare to the old 6-team DE regionals before the field expanded from 48 to 64. Those were so fun, and absolute mayhem on your pitching staff.

That last part seems lightly fine to have done away with?
I don’t mind getting somewhat deep, but when you just have slop and closers throwing 110 pitches, god that gets weird

Nah it was awesome. I was lucky enough to get to attend several that Texas hosted over the years. A long, crazy party with so many visiting fan bases. So much fun.

I was being serious, sorry if it came across otherwise. I find that very interesting. And I'm not surprised it's been that long, there's usually some pretty consistent teams that make it regularly.

Anyone else find CCUs strategy of trying to take HBPs about as fun as Duke priding themselves on trying to draw charges?

LSU vs Arky tonight?

SEC invite coming?

It's not like they haven't won the CWS before. That's a legit program.

I love programs like that. Smaller schools with the profile that lands baseball players.

SEC invite coming?
Probably need to lower their academic standards first.

LSU vs Arky tonight?
Feeling like LSU gets through, though Arky would entertain me more.
-
Hawgs looked pretty good in their last 2 games
-
I'm still trying to figure out how the 6 team regionals worked. The brackets made no sense. It seems like the highest ranked winner had to play the highest ranked loser, in a one sided elimination game, while the two lowest ranked losers got to play each other?
-
What a brutal defeat for Arkansas.

As I recall it was just a 6-team double elimination bracket, where the top 2 seeds got byes in the first round while seeds 3-6 and 4-5 played the first two games. Then winners advance to play 1 and 2 and losers drop to the loser's bracket. From then on all proceeds as a normal double elimination tournament.
Did you see something different cited somewhere? It's been a while but I went to several of them and that's the way I remember it.
-

I'm aware. They knocked us out of our own Super that year.
Fun fact: iirc, the team they defeated to win the CWS that year.....Arizona, coached by current LSU coach, Jay Johnson.
-

Better to be lucky than good, I guess. This is the okayest team I've ever seen make it to Omaha, much less the finals.
It would've been tough for Ark to beat us twice in a row, but that one yesterday was theirs for the taking. They could have ended the game twice and I actually feel bad for the guys who misplayed the ball. I wonder what was going through the head of the guy who forced the out at third. The double play was there, game over. The moment was big and you have to wonder if excitement got the better of him.
-
Unfortunately for them, this is nothing new for Arkansas.

yup, even if you don't get the runner at first. take the out at 2nd. The runner going to 3rd can't beat you.

I pulled the 1998 bracket. It seems like it was 1-6, 2-5, 3-4. Then the two lowest seeded losers played an elimination game. The highest seeded loser had to play the 1 seed, and if they lost, they were done? Seems like a big disadvantage for them?

Huh. I definitely don't remember that, but it was a long time ago. It's also possible they changed the 6-team regional format at various times, as they did several times for the 8-team CWS format.

What happened exactly? I didn't read about it or watch it.

Arkansas had us in the 9th, 5-3. After a one-out single and a walk put two on for LSU, Arkansas had an opportunity to end the game with a tailor-made double play ball. Their spectacular shortstop instead took the force at 3rd. Then we dinged one to left where the Ark outfielder wavered on whether to catch it or block it and wound up doing neither. Bounced off his glove and let two runs score, tying it up. Another line drive gave us a walk-off win.
-
I usually root for LSU but,, was rooting for Arky last night just to be able to have another game tonight.
Oh well...........

Classic CWS forecast for the weekend .
Low 100s.
I dont think I've ever been hotter at a sporting event than the CWS.

Never been.
As much as our fans love the place, there must be something pleasant about it.

The flavor of victory and Jell-O shots?

Coastal winning would probably be more fun, but LSU probably takes it.
Either way, a couple of interesting and good seasons set to come to a close.

Rare case, where I'm rooting for the high major. Not particularly a fan of crowding the plate and leaning into pitches

#6 vs #13 for the natty. Get used to it in football, too.

Blazing heat notwithstanding, attending the CWS for multiple days is a ton of fun.

If numbers 1-5 and 7-12 flame out in a 16-team tournament then they deserve to lose.
Want the championship? Don't lose to scrub teams.
My baseball team was the #2 national seed. They lost to a team seeded between 17 and 32. They couldn't play better, they couldn't be better, so they weren't better.
-

You must know this is nonsense, especially in baseball.

Lulzno
-
Seems like it's nonsense more in football than in baseball. Baseball tourney features multiple games with double elimination format, whereas football is a one-off and so would be more prone to fluky outcomes, I'd think.
Speaking of, apparently Coastal Carolina's first pitcher tonight is named Flukey.
-
Baseball is the sport with the least variance between best and worst in a 1-game situation. A postseason tournament is a series of 1-game situations.
The very best college football teams win 90-100% of their games in a season.
NFL - 80-85%
NBA - 75%
MLB - 60-65%
college baseball - 75%, but with 10-15 games to start the year vs cannon fodder + midweek games, that is inflated
There is a lot of luck in the outcome of baseball games, built into the game itself. So these elimination games in college baseball reveal VERY little in terms of who is best.
Like MLB's postseason, basically it's a dice roll, with each team getting a face of the die. You can't will yourself to victory in a 1-game sample size very well (or even in a short series).
That's why MLB has a different WS champion every year.
-
I was rooting for LSU, but fuck these umps. Go CCU
-
Umps must be getting some of that LSU NIL money.
-
I picked the wrong decade to quit watching baseball.
Saw a clip from the first inning yesterday......not sure I've ever seen a baseball umpire flop.

This wound up being 52,390 for LSU fans. Couldn't top their 2023 number of 68,888 but it was attributed to less games played, as the 2023 team faced elimination twice.
Damn, that is a lot of jello shots.
