I do wish both of these games were on the same day, but with the NFL engulfing the entire weekend, there's really no way to do that unfortunately, unless you did them at like 5/8:30 today
Notre Dame 28, Penn State 24
Texas 23, Ohio State 21
-
So Texas are the nerds of the bunch. I'm cool with that.
PSU 20, ND 17
Texas vs. tOSU.... maybe I'll make a prediction tomorrow...

You're braver than me. I have no idea about these games. Nothing to do with feeling like it's a hard pick and I don't want to be wrong. Literally no clue one way or the other who might win these games.
I guess, at least as far as the Semis go, the playoffs did its job. I anticipate the games way more when I don't have a strong opinion on who will win.

OSU is the biggest nerd. Depending on how good you play, you might have 200 logos on your helmet.

I'd complain about them putting these games on starting at 4:30 PM PT which is still part of the work day, like they don't care about West Coast CFB fans...
...and then I realized West Coasters don't care about CFB, or the PAC 12 would still exist.

Yup. I spent years trying to make PiratesRoost understand that the PAC-12 was always going to be more vulnerable than the B12, because people on the Left Coast don't give a crap about college football. He never did believe me. Wonder what he's thinking these days?

Wonder what he's thinking these days?
He's of a split mind, ever since the most important 4 lobes of his brain went to the Big Ten, and nobody gives a crap about the others.

Penn State big over Notre Dame. 34-13.
Gut says Ohio State will likely beat Texas but fuck (or is it butt fuck?) that.....Texas by a million. Hook 'Em.
-
If I were forced to bet, I'd definitely pick Ohio State to win, and cover. They have even more talent than Texas, and they've played better than Texas recently, against competition that I think is better than what Texas has faced.
But, they still have Ryan Day coaching, and that counts for something.

Wow. A 21 point win for PSU. Bold move cotton.
i honestly have no earthly feel for who wins these 2 games. I will be mildly surprised if they aren’t closer than that.

lol. And Day and Kelley get a lot of credit for their play calling- and they should. But Sark may be the best in the business.
-
Sark likes to get way too cute. He abandons the run at the slightest sign of less than 6 yards. Shoot, against Arizona State, he abandoned the run even while averaging 6 ypc early on.
If Sark doesn't make a serious effort at running the ball, the Buckeyes are gonna run away with this one. Real simple.

Um, what? Didn’t he declare for the draft a week ago?
That draft grade he got back must’ve sucked…

Alright, this is the SOC thread after all-- anybody got any food/drink plans for the game tonight? I know it's just a rando Thursday night, but there is a B1G team playing after all.
Cold and rainy here, gonna be 36 degrees for the next 16 hours or so. So I'm heating up the second half of the chili I made for New Year's day. I made a huge batch for camping, froze half of it for a rainy day, and here we are. I'll pair it with cornbread and a lovely Pecan Porter from a local brewery. Absolutely perfect for a dreary winter's evening.
-
We didn't plan based on the game, but tonight is Mediterranean Cod (basically cod baked with sauteed onion, garlic, olives and tomatoes) and roasted Brussels sprouts.
Tomorrow's bigger... Smoked baby back ribs, cheese potato casserole, salad, and chocolate cake for dessert. But again, not based on the game. It's the going-away dinner for my FIL and wife's stepmom who are leaving to move to Phoenix on Saturday.

you aren’t transferring to Miami if you’re about to be a 1st round pick. He must’ve been told he was about to be a 2nd or 3rd rd pick.

A Pecan Porter and a Bowl of Red.I'm settling for Eggplant Parmeson and an Elliot Ness Amber Lager - untouchably smooth

You are wrong~whatever~ole.Texas has the athletes if they wake up and realize the Bucknuts are down 3 on the O-line.And the Horns have Williams evidently suiting up so that bodes well for them.I got nothing after that

I think you're supposed to add that there is NO WAY Ohio State beats Texas.
-
That's a given No Way the Domer lose though right?
-
Plus I believe his GF is there
not for long. living in Coral Gables and being 21-22 and the starting QB of the Miami Hurricanes with millions of dollars from NIL is probably the last place in the world to have a girlfriend and judging by those leaked dm’s he is DTF whatever girls he can 😂
-
Refs letting the DBs play strong for now... feel like this favors ND because our receivers are not the strongest (outside Warren).
-
Huge interception, need to get points off it how this game is going
-
Allar bailed out by a flag
-
Allar bailed out by a flag
Flag was legit. Allar’s throw right on if WR not held.
-
Flag was legit. Allar’s throw right on if WR not held.
While I agree.. I don't have any faith in our receivers to go up and catch that.
-
That pass wasn't great, but needs to be caught. Still, will take the points. Need the D to hold.
-
man Allar missed that walk in TD throw but the back should’ve had it. Gotta make that play.
-
Kirk Ferentz is loving this game
-
ND has zero downfield passing threat. That makes life super easy for an excellent defense like Penn State.
MDot called this- unless NDs D or special teams can keep them in it.
-
Huge touchdown, need to hold Notre Dame scoreless on their final drive since they get the ball to start the 3rd quarter
-

That 10 points is likely all PSU needs. ND can’t pass- they are one dimensional and easy for the Lions to defend.

Too many kids activites tonight, just sitting down now. Sucks that its a Thursday night

Had some ground beef and some ground italian sausage leftover from spaghetti a few nights ago. Was going to go bad. So I browned it up, threw some corn and seasoning in there for a hearty meal.
Beck had good stats, but wasn't actually good. The UGA fans cheered when the backup came in the other week.
This is what I thought it'd be, lots of defense. PSU's last drive was a manly-man drive. I didn't know those still existed.
Other than that, not stoked that we have an 80% chance at a 2-loss NC this year. And we already know it.
Progress?
-
Yeah, was at a kid's golf lesson for most of 1st quarter. the only thing dumber than a Thursday night game is a New Year's Eve playoff game.
I did come to conclusion at the golf place (talking to another Dad), I really hate the expression 'explosive play(s)'. not only because there's no consistent definition, it is just a lame expression.

ND bringing in that back up- who apparently can sling it, may change the complexion of this game. We shall see.
-
Yeah, was at a kid's golf lesson for most of 1st quarter. the only thing dumber than a Thursday night game is a New Year's Eve playoff game.
Fortunately that coincided with us having kids, so I actually liked the NYE playoffs. Was stuck at home anyway, and it was a lot better than hours of Ryan Seacrest
-
Made this last night. Good stuff. From Jet Tila's book.
-
ND bringing in that back up- who apparently can sling it, may change the complexion of this game. We shall see.
they need that backup to hit some big pass plays downfield or they are screwed. they have zero pass threat with Riley Leonard- he’s basically Alex Orji but he can throw it a teeny bit whereas Orji can’t at all- and also he doesn’t turn it over like clock work like Orji if he does throw.
-
Atrocious start to the half, game about to be reset
-
Abdul Carter goes out for 3 snaps and ND gets 52 yards and a TD. Yeah, they need him to stay on the field.
-
Riley Leonard throws so many wobbly floaters- if Penn State’s DBs knew how to play the ball in the air at all they’d have multiple picks. Will Johnson would have a field day with this guy.
-
feels like a game Penn State should’ve been running away with that first half and then…..Franklin gonna Franklin.
-
incredible effort by Love right there.
either of these teams would get smoked by Ohio State imo.
-
Well yeah, these are 2 programs that have a history of struggling vs big-boy teams. One of them is playing in the NCG. Good luck with that.
-
So… what would you propose?
Back to the old bowl system with a +1 game as needed.
Crazy talk.
-
WHAT A PICK!!
-
Back to the old bowl system with a +1 game as needed.
Crazy talk.
I wouldn’t mind that. Of course the 2 teams would be voted on.
-
Well everyone in our secondary just fell on their ass... hopefully we can have a 4:38 scoring drive to win at the end of regulation
-
how do you let the WR get that wide open with 5 mins left. yikes.
-
WOW.
That DB got SHOOK.
-
Well this turned out to be a really good game.
-
how do you let the WR get that wide open with 5 mins left. yikes.
Man DB slipped immediately and the deep guy got shooketh
-
it's entertaining
missed the first half
Didn't realize anyone was dumb enough to have this game on a thursday night
already had dinner plans with a customer (great steaks)
then 2 1/2 hour drive home

I am pulling for Penn State and have all night, believe me I want to be so wrong about James Franklin here. The only team I hate more than Notre Dame is Ohio State. If those two play each other for the Natty I would legit root for the asteroid.
-
Drew Allar hates you apparently

both QBs are bad
-
Drew Allar hates you apparently
he should hate his head coach. kid should be WAY better than he is with his size and arm talent. that throw right there- that's why he's going back to school and not off to the top 10 of the NFL draft- even though he looks like Ben Roethlisberger and has a cannon arm.
-
can James Franklin actually win a big game?
the answer to both questions is no.
The last big game ND won was in 1988.
-
The last big game ND won was in 1988.
well they did just beat Kirby Smart and his SEC champs Jawjaw squad last round. I'd consider that a big win.
is this one considered a big win for them though if they beat James Franklin- a guy who cannot win a big game if his life depended on it?

A rocket arm shouldn't be the bar to clear and then you hope for the other things like decision-making, command of the offense, etc. It's fucking stupid thinking.
Good decision-making should be the default bar to clear, and then you look for/hope for the rocket arm, etc.
Brady, Montana, Manning, Brees, and many many others........EVERY top-5 QB bust had better "arm talent" than them. So what?!?!
It's weird - racism over the QB position prevailed for so long because it was a "thinking" position.....and yet a rocket arm throws all that out the window?!? Again, fucking stupid. The only all-time greats with rocket arms were Favre, Marino, Roethlisberger....Elway....Stafford? He's not an all-time great, exactly.
The point is, EVERY SINGLE QB BUST had a rocket arm. Gee, maybe that's not necessarily the catalyst for a great QB.
-
I think NDs grit is impressive. They will give Texas or OSU a helluva game.
-
I expect this ND NC appearance to go about the same as the last one vs Alabama in the 2012 season.
-
I was absolutely shocked they got aggressive with under a minute to go. Allar had been awful
-
I think NDs grit is impressive. They will give Texas or OSU a helluva game.
Their QB is a one-look passer....if it's not there, he scrambles. DCs LOVE those QBs. Spy him with one of your super athletes and they will struggle to score.

pretty much agree but NFL GM/coaches always fall in love with the raw talent and feel like they can coach said QB up to become great.
As far as great arms go- well Aaron Rodgers had a pretty incredible arm- so put him in there. Aikman had a phenomenal arm- put him in there. I think Stafford should be considered an all-timer. He was stuck on an awful franchise with terrible coaching in Detroit for majority of his career- had he been in LA with McVey his entire career he'd be way up there. Mahomes is already an all-timer and he's got an elite arm. Josh Allen could get there- and that dudes arm is naaasty.
-
I think NDs grit is impressive. They will give Texas or OSU a helluva game.
they definitely are tough as nails and have grit...but their QB can't really throw it. If say vs Ohio State Jeremiah Smith goes off vs them early and they are down 14 or 17 points early not sure they have the type of QB who can recover from that...
-
McElroy kept bringing up Allar not throwing picks. Its because he never goes down field. He got picked off on two total jump balls tonight. They were both good calls, but those were not good or smart throws. Then he makes a third dumb, bad throw, and its ballgame
-
All true. But they put up 27 tonight and won.
Penn State wins if their DB doesn't get juked out of his jock off the LOS.

Don't do that.
We're discussing ND's limits on offense. That fluke play allowed ND to score 27 instead of 17. That's the point.

He's certainly toned it down after dropping multiple F bombs on the sideline reporter after one of their early games this year. Was barely even celebratory in the post-game interview last night.
He probably got a call from the Pope and was told to cut it out.
-
Ha! Maybe so. Admittedly I haven't watched much ND football, really the only times I've seen him for any length of time was against the Ags in week1, last night, and a couple of times in between.
-
Yeah, I hate Notre Dame, but Freeman seems extremely likable
Exactly my take. I still strongly dislike Notre Dame, but he's really a solid dude. One of my really good friends of 40 years now is best friends with his wife and the guy is just all around a great guy, great husband and father. He's everything you want impacting and teaching young men. Coach of Notre Dame and a former Buckeye is a perfect recipe why I should dislike him, but we need more people like him.
-

That struck me as pretty standard practice. If the office gets moving a little, you try to get 30 to 40 yards and see what happens.
Even if you go to overtime, you’re going to be in
a do or die situation with that exact same quarterback, so that’s not that much of an improvement
-
Miami bound I would guess
I think Miami is gonna buy Quinn Ewers.

He completed exactly zero passes to WRs, and threw two awful passes that got picked off. They were negated by correct but irrelevant PI calls. Then with 45 seconds you decide to push the ball down the field? Not all offenses are the same. If you have Cam Ward, sure. If you run a triple option, no. Penn State does not have an offense that does well on deep shots, and they were HORRIBLE on it last night. I'm fine with that same quarterback in an untimed situation to go 25 yards. Not to go 60+ yards in 45 seconds. It's not the same thing, even if it's the same quarterback
-

Rumors in Austin are, it's all Oregon. They have a guy but maybe they don't like that guy, who knows? And it's going to take a pretty good chunk of change to make him do college one more year instead of the NFL, even if his NFL draft status isn't all that great.
This is the part of NIL/portal/free agency/college pay-for-play that really is just so different and unnerving, to me. In a world with no NIL and no unlimited free agency, Ewers would most likely be sticking around for another year at Texas if a check on his NFL draft status came back as less than desirable. Even with Arch Manning waiting in the wings, he'd probably still be the most likely starter, and Arch would either have to sit another year, or transfer, but there wouldn't be a pile of money waiting for him at a new school, so the only reason to transfer would be for playing time.
As it is, you have a young promising QB potentially pushing out a proven starter (even if he's not as great as we'd hoped), because I guess we don't want to lose the young guy. There are worse problems to have, of course, it's just really weird. Ideally Ewers would have just aced this season, had mega-high draft potential, and moved on, as part of the natural course of things. This is so weird, and I don't like it. But it is what it is.
-

I made Scott Tolzien jokes about a few QBs the past few years, but I can’t trust the five-star to do what I’d trust Tolzien to do, I suppose that says something about how things would end for PSU.
(I do think there should've been more “just get a ball to a playmaker in space” emphasis, but that was what it was)
-
Allar had a bad night. ND gets some of the credit for that. The enemy gets a vote.
More points than I expected, but basically the game I thought we'd see. Freeman outcoached Franklin.
Winner of Texas/OSU will justifiably be favored, but defense wins championships, and that's what ND relies on. I wouldn't for a moment suggest ND should be favored in the championship game, but I don't expect a repeat of 2013.

That is interesting to me. I feel like in some ways the thing I like best about the new era is avoiding potential unhappy quarterback situations like that.
Like Quinn returning will probably not be enjoyable for him, and probably not the Texas fan base. In some ways, he’s run his course.
I am a bit skeptical about a landing spot like Oregon, or maybe even Miami. to get where those programs want to go, they will probably need really high-end quarterback play. And grabbing a secondhand Quinn Ewers or Carson Beck is probably not getting you there. as much as I don’t particularly enjoy what Miami is, they did have the right idea landing Cam Ward. (I am also kind of fascinated by the recent evolution of the George quarterback room behind Beck, but that’s another matter)
-
Aaron Murray (for whatever his opinion is worth) was suggesting last night that Beck could end up at Ohio State. That could be quite something. Despite his less spectacular showing this year, I think it had more to do with losing some amazing weapons and other, more general, UGA problems. Give him that Buckeye WR kid and an OL, he'd probably do major damage.

This morning I got "O-H!"ed by a park ranger at Zion NP, as I was embarking on a nice tranquil pregame hike up the cold and lonely narrows.
Glorious time to be a Buckeye.

Tackled by the turf monster

Ohio State has won all 3 playoff games by 2 TD's or more. They beat Tennessee by 25. Oregon by 20. Texas by 14.

ND is not in danger of winning a NC.
-
So I guess IU might have the fewest bad losses in a season of any non-undefeated team in history.

2014 MSU went 11-2, also with the two losses being to the two teams in the national championship (Oregon and OSU)
-
IF tOSU beats ND it will be the 1st time the BIG TEN has won B2B Natty's since Duff's Spartans did it in the mid '60s

I guess the difference is that both of those games were regular season, so MSU still played and beat #6 Baylor in the Cotton Bowl

tbf, LSU barely ever made the playoffs before Kelly took over...
-
Anyway, she's like two years behind the curve. About that long ago I posted on this board, asking people to offer opinions on why the conventional wisdom was that Kelly would do so well at LSU. The thought in the general media ethos seemed to be he'd have better players. I noted I had done a quick look (emphasis on "quick") at ND and LSU's recruiting for the past 4-5 years and found ND had recruited as well or better than LSU over that time frame, according to the recruiting services. Not that I didn't believe in him per se, but if that was the reason offered, I was skeptical and I wondered if anyone could change my mind.
This far down the road I feel like my skepticism was justified. ND has improved under Marcus Freeman, and LSU probably has the lower floor I predicted (would never get as bad as the Orgeron years) and also the same ceiling we saw with ND. He won't win a title in BR. He's just not a good situational coach, judging by three years here, and it also appears he may have problems connected with our kids and that he's not that great at hiring staff either.
I think he's a bit of a myth created by ND's lighter schedule and coaching in a legit conference has promoted him past his Threshold of Incompetency.

The SEC had 9 back-to-back NCs in the last 20 years.
-
Nebraska has had two since the BigTen has had one.
-
The SEC's past is certainly impressive. Its future? Not so much.

The SEC simply made the mistake of not adding a Rutgers and a Nebraska. Chum.

Yeah, the SEC has no chum.

So should we just cancel the season and fold up the conference, or what?
-
The SEC simply made the mistake of not being able to adjust to other conferences now paying players.
